LOTRO or AION trying to decide which one to play.

oliver71oliver71 Member Posts: 29

Hi gang.

I have narrowed down my choice of games to play atm to LOTRO or AION. I like pve and interesting content. I dont mind to grind a bit as long as its not in the Lineage 2 mould . I dont  mind PVP but its not my main focus. I play a majority of my time solo due to work hours and living in the Oceanic region.

Thanks for any feedback.

(played wow, aoc pvp server, EQ2, DDO, GW)

Assuming your financial situation isn't too tight -- I'd recommend Aion first.  There's nothing like game launches.  Even games that are somewhat meh like WAR and AoC were incredibly fun the first couple of months.  Aion is quite similar to what WoW was at launch.  From CB and OB I've enjoyed it immensely but unsure how long the fun will last at cap.  Hopefully I can play it slow enough to get 6 months out of it =D.

On LOTRO, it's fun, but the fun parts are in group sections.  Unless you have a few friends to play with you, it can be incredibly tedious getting to cap in Moria =/.

I actually have subs to both games. PLayed AION OB  which i enjoyed .Althougth being an Oceanic player having 700ms ping kinda worries me. Playing LOTRO atm and really enjoying the game as well probably the most beautiful MMO i have see. Have to make an executive decision this weekend. Sigh.

If you want pvp, play Aion,.  If pve, play LotRO.

I'd say go for LOTRO unless your a big pvp fan. LOTRO has plenty of content now to solo with althought once I got through the mines of moria I couldnt force myself to do it again.

If you enjoy pvp Aion would be better for you. LOTROs pvp is probly some of the worst out there unfortionately... LOTRO is a very pve focused MMO so it really depends on your play style.

there is a server is for Oceanic players now, so you can check into that.  Also, if you like solo, you can play spiritmaster, pretty much you don't need anyone for Aion.  In fact, you can pretty much solo with every class as long as you stay out of group area or dungeons, some classes can solo elite mobs once the level is higher then elite mobs.  You don't even have to step a foot into PvP zone: Abyss and level up to 50.  If you don't like rife, there is an area with no rift at all.  You can just PvE.

True but whats the point of playing Aion if you dont plan to pvp? Wouldnt you be missing like...80% of the content LOL

If you want to focus on PvE, and want a game you could play mostly solo, I would choose LoTRO over Aion at the moment.  It's a prettier game, in my opinion, has interesting classes, gives room to explore and quest, and you can solo all the way to 60 if you choose.

I can't be sure since I've only played in the beta for Aion. But I think there would be more to do at end-game in Aion, as there will be pvp and pve things to do.

LOTRO is mainly a pve game, with pvp merely an afterthought. Thus end-game content in lotro consists primarily of grinding pve instances and running daily quests repeatedly. Lotro's 1-60 journey is great fun, but the end-game is very lacking.

    Both are really good games.

LotRO already is a bit dated though, imho. It's also a lot less populated. However, it's much more PvE oriented, so if that's your thing I'd suggest at least trying LotRO.

Aion will probably satisfy you more in just about every other aspect, with the exception of lore and perhaps quests. They spent a lot of time on Aion's lore and questing, but it's not as rich as the LotRO universe.

I would say go with LOTRO since you say your pretty meh on pvp.  LOTRO is much more pve friendly where Aion is pvp focused first with pve secondary.

Aion is going to be busy the first few months, but for me, it's not a game that will keep people for too long.

If you like a good story driven game pve wise LOTRO is great.

I cant help but disagree with this guy about the "prettyness". Aion, to me, has the nicest visuals of all MMOs to date.

True, if you like asian anime hermaphrodites in plastic armor beating on teddy bears and mushrooms, the visuals are just awesome.  For everyone else, LOTRO will probably be an overall better experience.

Not even close, you must not have ever run LOTRO full blast...it looks ridiculously good...Aion is up there, but by far not the best.

Well, if you played AOC pvp and liked it I'd say go with Aion just because it's different and about to launch. LOTR is just another traditional fantasy game. It's a decent game but that genre has been over done with EQ, EQ2, AC, AC2, DAOC, WOW, DDO, AOC, etc.

Aion is the same basic gameplay but the lore and graphics are different enough to be more interesting IMO. PvPvE looks interesting as does xyz axis combat.

If you get upset about getting ganked though don't buy Aion. If your a lone wolf who wants to solo all the time you will probably get ganked a lot. Your gonna want a guild in Aion for sure. If your going Aion get in early. As another poster already stated launch is the best time to join a game. The later you start the less people there will be in the newbie zones to group with and there will be more high level players around to gank you.

BTW, Nezeka is going to be turned into an Oceanic server so you dont have to worry about the ping. Aside from that I would go for Aion since it is very iteresting. I like pvp but im not hardcore, I am more interested in the Lore and such. I love Aion lore and the PvE seems really fun. You should just give it a try with the free month. After the month if you dont like it you can always move on.

You really shouldn't post about games you obviously haven't tried. You are basing your opinion on the emo looking characters in the ads. If you had tried it you would have found you can make your avatar look like whatever you want. You want an ugly avatar no problem. You can make an ugly little gnome or dwarf or giant looking character. Anything you want. You can make them fat or skinny, you can swap any graphics for your armor or weapons. Some people will create anime characters which you obviously hate, but if you want a traditional D&D looking character you can do it easily.

It's worth noting that Turbine has a long history of sucking too. They made 3 attempts to make a good fantasy MMO and have failed 3 times.  AC sucked, AC2 sucked so bad it's gone. LOTR is meh, It's a decent game but been there done that. EQ2 and DAOC are much better traditional fantasy MMO's.

Sure, you *can* make characters look however you want. Doesn't change the fact that I saw about a thousand slight variations of the same emo effeminate ladyboy anime toon during the two CB weekends I played in (so I did, in fact, play the game...unfortunately). So, while I was able to make a bald, demonic scarred-up looking dude...everyone around me looked like they were extras that were shaken out of a tear-laden Final Fantasy cut scene.

    What do you want ?

Playing in the world of Middle Earth and adventure a few months perhaps even a few years in it?

Or playing a Korean copycat with translated lore and people that grow wings on their backs?

Enter the meh surroundings of Aion and the terrible static boss fights while getting ganked by so called organised gangs 10 levels above you. Yep some people would call that "pvp". I would call it ganking zergfests.

    Tough choice I'd say.

Thanks again for all the feedback guys, All tramendous. i will probably go with LOTRO i just seem to like the feel for it more. ONe poster mentioned ganking i had my fair share of it in AOC  and EQ2 both on Fury and Tyranny Nagafen servers. So i am over being owned and getting my game play screwed up by people in guilds who have nothing to do but screw lowbies.

Once again thank ever so much for feedback.

Give Turbine some credit for DDO also (www.ddo.com). Overall I think Turbine is one of the better MMO makers out there.

CCP is no 1 in my eyes.

Everything the OP says points to LOTRO. You will find it less of a grind and the quests are varied and interesting. The PvP in Lotro is a side game and very suitable for someone who is not that into PvP. Hell I am a big PvP fan and loved it, so the Ettenmoors will do for someone who is not so keen on PvP for sure.

But Aion has the better graphics surely? Only beaten by AOC which makes Aion the second best game graphically in MMO land.

I'll agree that Aion has some of the best character models, but the environment could use some work. Some of the environment in Aion seems to use some very low-res textures.

Think for a second. There's a reason for this. Of course they could push everything even more, graphically...BUT...
