The worst graphics in a new mmo

The character creation system is great and lots to fun. Creating your character is more enjoyable than actually playing the character.

Your character looks good when you create it but once you start playing the graphics change to a comic style with black outlines. This art-style is awful. When you zoom out your character looks like it's blurry. It was so horrible I actually canceled my subscription.

Guess I'll have to play Warhammer while I wait for Aion to be released.

Seriously. Horrible gfx...

    No they're not. lawl

Turn all the graphics on max and turn off cinematic depth of focus (I think that's what it's called) because that gives it the blur effect which IS crap.

With those settings it looks pretty damn good. The only exception are the animals (wolves, bears etc.), they do look kinda meh.

P.S. You can turn off the comic book outline...

You must not have a good graphics card then. I think it looks great. Its like a live-action comic . I dig it.

I can understand quitting a game because you did not like the graphics.  I tried the WoW trial and quit after 30 minutes because the graphics were cartoony and dated.  Everyone has one or two things that they absolutely will not stand in a game.  For some, it's a RMT, pvp style, etc.  For me, and the OP, it's graphical style.

If you looked at the options you would have discovered a LOT of options for graphics.  The initial setup isn't to my liking at all but after adjusting various settings the graphics look quite good.

I know. I was thinking the same thing. I hate super heroes and playing someone who is a super hero, so naturally I tried Champions Online and was like "WTF? Worst Game ever...they make me play a super hero"

    Derp.

    You fail as a troll.

The cel-shaded art-choice was a risk because it is different, but very similar to comic books which is the origin of super hero tales. Them doing something different is a good thing IMHO. However, you can always go back to COH, they just figured out how to make the exact same power you've been using for 5 years be blue instead of purple, so thats a plus. They didn't add any new powers or change anything really, but now you can have access to some of the existing power-sets as different 'classes'.

    Me, I'll be playing CO.

1 post, might be one of the regular Trolls trying on a new mask.

Anyway, the graphics are great and yes they are stylized for a comic book look and feel because it is a SUPER HERO game made to look like a SUPER HERO COMIC BOOK.

You can turn off the cell shading and the blur but I like the cell shading personally.

I like being a super hero but does the graphic has to be like comic book?  Is it a law?  I didn't say it's worst game ever, this is a post about graphic issue.  So far AOC has the best graphic but it's a crappy game when I played, maybe they have improved now, but not for me to judge since I don't play it anymore.

I played CO and game itself was ok to me.... but look at the screen was an eye sore to me...  not the texture or anything, I just don't like comic book, when I look at the video before the game released.  It looked fine to me, not until I actually played it then the game itself was fun and fast action game but just the graphic turns me off.

I wonder if you have an older video card then. The game looks exactly like the videos to me and are great. I like the super hero/ cell shaded style of art too. It FITS the genre.

Is there a hard/ fast rule on this-no. But Cryptic was clear that the direction in art was to make a stylized comic book look to the game so it should be no shocker that it looks that way.

Conan graphics are outstanding, there is no doubt, but I think you may be mistaking artistic style with poor graphics in that case.

Its the kind of risk they took with WOW. Wow is very cartoony as opposed to the direction EQ II was taking with a more photo-realistic angle. The art-style of WOW grows on you so much that you almost forget that it is cartoony and it becomes Organic.

I think your eye/mind starts to process it as 'normal' because everything you see seems to 'fit together'. I don't really feel I can explain it very well, but when you are out on the plains of the barrens and lions jump out and chase down a gazzelle, I know that it didn't seem "like a game" as much as it could have.

I get that same think after a full weekend of playing CO. The Art style grows on you. If you aren't a troll, give it more time.

The graphics in this game are as good as any we've seen in an MMO so far.  The fact that characters don't always look like they do in the character manager is unfortunate but not a game killer (CoX is the same way).

But graphics don't mean much anyways.  I didn't like WoW's style either and decided to stay with EQ2 back when the games came out.  After quitting EQ2 a few months later I realized that I was wrong; WoW is a much more entertaining game and I stayed with that for years (and still play it off and on).  And I still don't care much for Wow's art style...

The real question is how can graphics so technically accomplised fail to impress?

The graphics are not comicbook in the traditional sense they're cartoony and heavily stylised (think Saturday morning superfriends). Animation and lighting effects are very good and parts of MC are beautiful from a distance. However the whole world lacks real atmosphere or character, the wilderness zones are, more often than not, downright ugly, many if not all the npc designs are bland and generic.

Artistic design, like the fictionalised aspect of missions is woefully lacking in any conviction to the comicbook theme, all too often you can tell something has been done to provide a misplaced belly laugh than actually engage your imagination and allow you to think 'wow'. imo its what you get when you design something you don't really care for yourself?

Your problems can be solved by simply disabling comic book style outlining and disabling depth of field blurring effects. I find CO to be one of the nicest looking MMO's released to date, but like WoW, you either like the art style or don't.

I've not played CO yet but have heard more than a few comments about the graphics and peoples dislike of them, again as stated by others there are many settings in this game to effect the graphics that can be tuned to fit your desire which I think in your case is possible because you said you liked the graphics until you started to actually play the toon.  Ultimately though I think every video game player hasa "graphical threshold" and maybe this game won't meet yours any time soon, good luck to you though.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

The graphics are great, I play it at 1920x1200 all maxed out and I love how it looks. It doesn't look AoC good, or should I say AoC detailed, but the game is sharp looking with high res texures, looks very good. I think you are overly critical on just about anything you play, because personally I played AoC at launch and loved it. The only thing to hate was when you hit 50 and ran out of quests, but under 50 that game rocked! And the content has now been filled. Either way, I don't think any game is going to give you what you are looking for, if you look for the worst in everything, you will not be happy with anything.

Just FYI - the black outline on things can be disabled in the graphics options if you prefer, but I think it looks good and works well with the comic look.  Yes, this is not photo realistic cutting edge graphics, it is designed to look like a comic book and in that regard they did a nice job with it I think.

Turn off the "Comic book style outline" and "Depth of field" effects from the advanced graphics options, and this game has some of the best graphics I've ever seen in an MMO (plus it may run better).

OP, either learn to check option menus, or learn to troll better.

I love the art style and art creator. I only tried the beta for two levels due to vacation, but what is truly holding me back is the gameplay and lack of thoughts going in to the open skill system...
