Maybe I misunderstood but i read a feature on this site regarding this game saying something along the lines of combat being turn based..dont get me wrong, i love FF and all that but the turn based combat in the games gets a lil old. can someone elaborate on what this means because after reading that a part of me almost died inside hah =p

From what I know, FF XI is considered a "Turn based" game by Square I think they mean that combat will be kind of slow and allow you more time to think out your next attack.
I assure u its not the turn base u are thinking off where u can take your sweet time to pick an attack and then the enemy does the same.
It just means it has the same fighting style as FFXI where the fighting is not a smash of all buttons to get as many swings in 1 sec as possible.

Turnbased in an MMO = not button mashing, or as like some like to call button smashing 'skill based'
Its probably more like Final Fantasy 12 speed or 13
I like some of the concepts but so far out of all the things I have heard, the biggest turn off is still the lack of auto attack and having to individually select moves based on 2 bars (possibly ffxii or ffxiii style) for every single attack is absolutely ridiculous and depending on how it is implemented could mean a no sale. No other game on the market, or coming out does not have an auto attack. One feature I like is that you don't have to constantly stare at the screen closely to perform all moves, instead you set auto attack and then time alternate moves or weapon skills in between.
Other than that I am pretty interested in this title, I just hope they get off the no auto attack high horse soon.

Auto attack isn't as useful as it was in the grinder days of MMOs. Even with a few of the currently released titles, no one really uses auto attack for more then just a buffer between skill casts. Plus, you'll still be able to use macros. I like the idea that you have to plan out your moves, which makes getting the exp more satisfying.
I have to agree with the crowd that are enjoying every piece of new news as good news. The developers have staked their reputation to FFXIV, where most other company's you would be hard pressed to recognize anyone. And they seem to be feeding us news in a well planned way, rather then waiting for the fans to beg for new news. The company behind the developer is organized and established, the logistics of forming a new branch or the reputation of the company aren't in question. While we've heard about other companies attempting a simultaneous world-wide release, there is little doubt both Square and Sony would drop the ball.
We're going to have to wait and see how streamlined the battle system is at TGS.
I never heard of any mmo where can attack as fast as you can mash the buttons. Not wow, eq1, eq2, vg, daoc, lotro. They all require you to wait a specified time between attacks. I call doubt on the supposition that they said turn based meaning that you cant fire attacks as fast as you type, since the comparison is meaningless without a common counter example. It would have to be a PR guy that is incompetently poor in english to say turn based when what they really meant was a slower attack rate.
did you play ffxi? if you did you would know the difference.
sure WoW etc has cooldowns, but they're usually pretty short. at least, for the most essential skills/spells. in fact, they're so short that talents that reduce cooldowns by fractions of seconds are useful.
ffxi and presumably ffxiv have a sort of real-time turn based feel. before you tell me that's an oxymoron, all it means is that rather than working out what you do in certain situations before hand and repeatedly hitting hotkeys, you have more time to comprehend what is going on and make tactical adjustments. this is not to say things won't get repetitive, certainly they will, if MMOs played like pure action games they would get pretty stressful, but square's turn influenced battle systems definitely have a more relaxed tactical feel than hotkey driven battle systems in games like WoW.

I have never in any game had any problem figuring out what buttons to push in real time, and Im an old guy. Its just not that quick of a sequence. To me turn-based can only mean that each party member takes turns. Did the developers REALLY ever call ffxi a "turn based" game, or is this what people are interpreting it as in order to make sense of them calling ffxiv turn based?
If the developers never called FFXI a turn based game, but now they are calling FFXIV turn based, then it seems to me they are implying that FFXIV is different not the same.

I'm all for combat along the lines of FFXI's where it wasn't just a button spam fest. I like combat that is coordinated (a-la skill chains) and allows you to pick attacks depending on what's going on at the time, not just spam shadow bolt until mob is dead crap.
However, I am not at all in favor of attack queuing or them not executing as I push the appropriate button(s). To me that would totally disconnect me from my character and put me in the role of a puppet master (not the class) rather than actually being immersed in the game. Please tell me they aren't doing that.

I don't get it.... if you don't like FF games you won't like this more than likely. If you liked FF games and you are complaining about turn-based fighting then you are just a walking contradiction, every FF game is turned based in some form. Why is this a surprise and why are you complaining? If you aren't going to play the game then awesome, the community doesn't need people that complain about things all the time.

who said anyone had a problem with it? i certainly don't, and i wouldn't expect anyone else to either. i wasn't saying it's quick like a button mashing rhythm game. i was describing WoW's system as being faster than ffxi. i was merely trying to describe the difference in style. let me emphasize two things that you ignored:
1. Did you play ffxi? if you did, you would understand the difference and we wouldn't be having this discussion.
2. I would describe it as "turn influenced" rather than "turn based." whereas games like WoW emphasize a real-time feel.
i'm not sure if they called ffxi turn based, but from having played it i can confidently say it does have that feel. the combat system in ffxiv will be modified but should also have a similar feel to it as ffxi. they will be different, but similar. the combat system in ffxi and ffxiv will probably have more in common than either game does with hotkey action bar games like WoW etc. it is a different battle system all together.
You can button mash skills. Just because they have refresh times, doesnt mean its not button mashing.
And, if you ever played EQ2, or LOTRO, thats button mashing.
Of course its not turnbased like offline RPGs. Jesus, how hard is this to understand? sorry to be rude.

thats probably their version of turn base if you dont time your attack right it take long enough to cast parry etc that foe as good chance to react
i was just thinking about this about so i'm gonna throw this out there. the new ffxiv system sounds comparable to mabinogi. where the choice and timing of your attacks matter a lot in your opponent's ability to counter and deal more damage back at you if you make a mistake.
i haven't spent much time playing mabinogi so i guess someone else would be better at drawing this comparison. in any case, if that's kind of how it is i'm sure ffxiv's new system will be pretty fun and engaging. ^_^
I'm surprised nobody has said this yet but I'm guessing "turn based" means there will be a timer between your attacks. So, for example, every five seconds or so, you can perform a new attack/ability. This is how many Final Fantasy games work.
This is opposed to a system seen in many MMOs where you have different abilities with their own refresh timers, so you can do "Ability A" then "Ability B" then "Ability C" then the timer on "Ability A" has reset and you can do that one again, etc.
Oh, and I completely disagree with those who want auto-attack in the game. I have no desire for auto-attack at all. I prefer to play the game myself and not have the computer play the game for me...
I hope it is turn based most final fantasy game are and the best FF games are turn based IMO. the closer to classic final fantasy feel the better. final fantasy xi players,NPC's and music had final fantasy feel but i really wasn.'t into the combat system though subjob was great old fashion feel"FF5 and FF9".
the people who want auto-attack are just voicing the concern that they don't want to have to hit a button for every individual normal melee attack. you would still have full control over your skills and spells and the target you attacked as well as positioning which will matter in ffxiv. even diablo 1 let you hold the mouse button down and auto-attack with normal melee. (edit: actually, now that i think about it, i'm not so sure it did lol... so think diablo 2 instead haha) i think anyone would agree it would be tedious and stupid to have to hit a button or click for every single attack.
the only exception i can think of for this would be if attacks were very spaced out and counted for a lot. for instance, if you only had to hit an enemy a handful of times before killing it and/or you didn't have to fight a ton of enemies to gain decent rewards. hmm. perhaps that's what SE is going for this time around?
Hmm the system seems a bit confusing to a lot of people, i'm not so sure of how it works myself from watching the videos...

Some of the most difficult and challenging RPG's I have played were turn based.
I love playing Chess. It's a mind game, not button mashing, how many moves ahead of your opponent are you? It's a game of wits.
