Does/Will this game feel empty?

theJPKtheJPK Member Posts: 91

Looking at a few videos of beta, the game looked very alone. Not many players, which is expected it's beta. And there isn't very many AI, which I guess is alright because again it's beta. But on launch will the game be full of life or at least not feel life void?

A reason towards quitting Darkfall over 2-3 months ago was it's emptiness, that and my clan was lame and my friends had quit. And I am wondering if this is comparable. And now that DF has become better if I should return to that or just wait for this?

Hard to say as it depends on a few variables we can't predict yet, the most important one being that we don't know how many people are going to buy and play the game yet.

I'd say a major factor will be the chat system. From what I read, over a year ago, chat is going to be extremely local(like /say local). That alone will make the game feel emptier than it really is.

I guess it depends if there will be hubs of interaction.

If this is how you feel I'd say you are better of resubbing to Df until mortal launches as it going to be almost impossible to say until they actually launch.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Considering they are taking a lot of influence from UO I believe it will be a lot more alive than DF was or is I havent played it since release so im not sure how it is today. Only thing I can really say is if they hold up to their promises I believe this game will be far above DF.

Even if the game has a small population and mobs are spread out it can still feel alive with fauna and NPCs in the city.  I believe the OP was looking more at it from that POV rather than a game with a high population.

Well as long as the mobs aren't overcrowded by people, there are little people who play to the point it feels lonely I am happy about poulation.  And as long as im not swimming in mobs or there is only an unrealistic shortage of mobs(which is rare cause games like WoW put mobs next to each other) im happy about NPCs.

Right now the beta previews on youtube show a huge lack of mobs and I hope they can at least double the mobs without causing huge server lag.

I dont think it will feel that empty. Just think about EvE; wide open space with most of it unpopulated. I think it will be similar to EvE, at times it will feel solo, but that will most likely be when your out in the wild all by your lonesome. Plus you can hook up with a guild and then your never be alone, unless your by yourself and your guild doesnt have a guild stone, or if yours does and nobody is online; in that case your just SOL.

Edit: BUT YES, if noone buys the game then it will feel damn empty.

Tried: EvE, DnD Online, LotRO, WAR, AoC,
Played: UO, SWG(pre-cu), GuildWars, FFXI, WoW
    Liked: UO, SWG, GuildWars
    Disliked: WoW, FFXI

Well, it is basically a Darkfall clone, so it will probably not have much PvE content, and just be PvP ganking near cities.

To the guy above me, MO is not a darkfall clone. They just both happen to be sandboxes.

Also the beta leaks dont represent the way the game will be at release.

They need to release an optimization patch so they can start adding more npcs and content. I think they are calling it MassiveLOD. In MO the draw distance is far, if you are standing on a mountain you can see all the way down the river, and it renders the stuff you see that far with the same polygons as somethign next to you . If they add more shit before the optimization patch you will have to have a beast machine.

Last, housing is supposed to be UO-style with restrictions, so they cant overpopulate the world with npcs and cities if clans are supposed to move in and build their own.

From various beta leaks, and personal experience, it is possible that the world may feel empty. The main reason the world could feel empty is becuase, atm, there aren't mobs or wild life around every turn. The only reason most MMOs don't feel empty is becuase every 10 yards or so there are more mobs to fill out the world. That most likely won't be the case with MO. However, once players start to fill out the world with houses, villages, cities (all player made and ran) the world will be a little more filled. SV could also have wild life and city life toned down for beta as well. But remember, this is a sandbox game. NPCs should be far and inbetween.

Heh, even the community is a clone of Darkfall. Full of people who flame "go back to WoW" whenever someone suggests any content other than FFA PvP.  The community alone is enough reason to stay away from this game.

Mortal Online is still in Phase 1 of beta...  there is no PvE enabled, except a small portion of harvestable mobs, so that PvP combat and trivial crafting can be tested properly.

    There are 3k beta testers..

Game comes out around Xmas!   MO is nothing like Darkfall

The last news said they kit 8k active beta testers,

There are between 3-5 diffrent types of mobs around all the citys,   and plenty of other places in the world that there are mobs not even close to citys.

Really? That sounds awesome! Finally an MMORPG with no magical, global chat.

How do you figure that in a sandbox game there should be few NPCs??

Dont confuse Darkfalls empty barrent worlds "because it is hardcore PvP game" for sandbox.

Sandbox simply means that you are free to do anything you like, anywhere you like (within reason) without having to follow a strict leveling path laid out to you by the devs. If anything there should be tons of mobs so you don't have to go to just one or two certain areas to harvest/fight the mobs.

Devs who fails to realise that NPCs are just as important as PvP will follow Darkfall with its near empty servers.

There's going to be a lot more to do in MO then PVP come release  i cant say much due to the NDA but.

PVP is not the Main Focus of MO, A living real world is the aim of MO.

The crafting system they have built is Far surpassed Dorkfail.

"Persson says, "The sandbox crafting is definitely worth mentioning, as the weapon crafting alone has over 142 million possible combination's of grips, handles, blades, heads and materials - not counting bows or shields. The armour crafting has even more options."

Edit: Oh yeah and the fan made maps of the world can be found by a Google Search.

Sim games like this are really more group oriented.  Especially considering this MMO is siming something that is more group oriented.  It just makes sense that you would need to group up with people or it would feel empty.

In the real world, the area is vast relative to the population, even now...  All the people in the world could fit in Australia and each would get an acre....  So yeah, just group with people, form your little community.
