EQ 2 has tagging of mobs -- this system has been heralded by many on here as the "better" way. Apples to oranges my friends. Wanna know how many times I was about to "tag" a mob in EQ2, just to have someone beat me to the punch as I was walking up to it, to start attacking ? welcome to MMOs. Some of you just come straight over from wow ? -- is this your second MMO ? if not, then you should know better.

The only problem I have is that the server was too crowded. You have to expect an amount of KSing. I knew it would happen and it did. So what. I did everything I could to NOT to KS. but the truth is, you had people comming from every direction, It's going to happen. You didn't see me crying about it. I would say, open another server or two, but after the cry babies leave, it should be normal.

WoW's system is for casters, if you're a melee you're SoL. having said that, there is no perfect way of dealing with it honestly. having it the "who does the most dmg wins" sux for tanks/healers when they're soloing. the "tag its mine" favors casters, i've seen this in WoW when BC was released, lock kept casting his insta dots on everything around him so no one else could get any of the hellboars.he had his priest friend there with him, if you wasn't right on top of the mob his dot would tick before you could hit it.
but its only like that because there is so many smashed into one little area, once its been out a week or 2 tops people will be more scattered. i had no problems in the chinese/korean servers just because i didn't start playing on them right away.
yeah it made questing easier, but it made little sense when a human mob dropped 5 heads.
argumenting with what makes sense in a game where several supposedly unique mobs get killed hundreds of times a day is sure to make a good point (yes that goes for pretty much all games out there).
Believe it or not, I actually saw a screenshot of players standing in line, single file, for a quest npc (don't know the circumstance of the quest though). The line looked like it was at least 15-20 deep.
It was the most amazing and surreal thing I think I've ever seen in an MMO.
Oh and the 'Everything is OK' box at server selection is a nice touch too. (LOL).
Ok, so after having played through almost the whole starter area I have to say that this area is highly unomptimized for handling newbie levling. Not only does the game only provide two starting areas (one single area for each faction), but the quests provided are anti-newbie friendly. What happens is the following: -There are quests where you need to kill certain mobs. Now, these mobs can be very rare compared to the number of people in the zone. There is an outright WAR to get these mobs, and it takes forever to complete. Also, I played a templar, the class whose DPS is what seemed like 10 times lower than say a mage. This means I can bash away at a mob for 20 seconds and then have a mage come and steal this mob by simple DPS. And that happens all the time since people are desperate to complete these annoying quests. -"Hey group up!" Grouping up doesn't do anything really, since most of the time you need a certain drop from these mobs, and only 1 member of the group can loot each mob. -There are other quests where you are supposed to interact with objects, like a sack of grain. Now these objects DESPAWN, every time someone clicks them. Then you have to wait a good while for them to come back. -NPC quests. These are perhaps the most riddiculous. Such as the Where is Rae quest (asmodian). 10, 15, 25 people waiting in line to be able to click the Cute Rabbit NPC to be able to proceed. And NO you can't really skip this because it's part of the epic quest chain. I ended up skipping a huge part of these quests and went xp grinding on some random mobs. At the end of my session I was starting to hate my fellow gamers so much because of overpopulation and mob stealing, that I had to log off. Clearly this could have been done alot better. Almost any other way had been an improvement.

Originally posted by abyss610 WoW's system is for casters, if you're a melee you're SoL.
There are just two melee classes, both of which can use a thrown weapon, bow, or gun to tag a mob.
Paladins are the ones who are left out (unless WoW has added some sort of ranged pull (without needing to take engineering for thrown explosives).
WoW's system isn't perfect, but it is clearly better than Aion's and works extremely well for groups.
Actually, paladins have Hand of Reckoning (which does instant damage to a mob they're not fighting); so yeah, there really aren't any classes that can't tag mobs from range in WoW.
Aion does have a lot of nice features, but their system for determining who get's a mob's drops isn't one of them.
Under the current system, many people used to WoW's system may find themselves unwittingly kill stealing; beyond that, since the system seems to totally depend on damage done, low damage classes (like healers and tanks) are always at the mercy of higher burst damage classes of their own faction. It also means that a higher level idiot can infinitly camp a quest NPC spawn, without even the slim chance for a lower level to tag the mob.
Well for me, it's pretty simple and realistic: it will be replace by the usual ''tag-first'' system soon, trust me... There is so many people complaining about it (and I agree, it's totally stupid) that eventually, and I can smell it coming VERY soon, NCSoft will change that system in an upcoming patch...
Don't believe me? What happened with Gameguard then after so many people complained about it huh? Mark my words, it will happen, and very soon at this rate... So to all the dumbasses out there that are enjoying KSing mobs, and are actually proud about it, I say this:
Enjoy it while you can little bastards, 'cause we'll be the ones laughing at your sorry carcasses eventually...

I hope you are right on that, because for my cleric it's the pest and i refuse to spend all evening channel hopping (just to see the next channel as crowded) in order to get a quest done.
This evening again i had lots of problems with getting my mobs tagged by dmg-classes. I wanted to roll this cleric not only for myself, but also to be usefull for other people in PvP later. Not a fast class to solo, i can tell you. Getting every other mob stolen by brats doesn't make it any faster. Also, in the leveling process there seems to be very little healing needed anyway since pots and bandages serve quite well, makes me wonder if i shouldn't reroll. I can smell the "where are all the healers??", "Why is there such a healer shortage??"-postings already
I started today after a 2.30h approximate queue, I got inside the server (forgot name but were all high) but didn't find anyone ksing, it's probably because now people have move forward into the game dunno yet.
Still deciding if I'll keep on playing or canceling my pre order because I don't like pvping but don't have anything to play that interests me much atm.
its Sorcs that do most of the mob stealing on my server its pretty crap if you ask me even if you tag the mob if someone hits it harder then the class you are playing can hit they get the mob its crap

I can agree 100% the noob zones made me feel that having many if any other players (accept a group) small, most places can be camped by a single player, now imagine 100 people. Tho changing channels was simple enough, im glad many could not find it, its under suport in the menu . Oddly enough the game does not balance channel 1 and 2 even on prestart = everyone. 8,9, 10 = empty. Unlike beta where everywhere = lag. those zones felt like i owned my own zone, where the smart players were long gone. the que raped me, 8 hours was insane. Tho unlike beta no lag. just masses of people. this zone should not make anyone complain if your stuck here quit while your ahead. The zones only apply to nooby areas. And looting is no diff then wow, accept for minor quests that seem to not like groups. found maybe 3 easy enough quit group done it and started group. Tho my understanding grouping early also = bad you finsihs to soon and it will catch up to you. So if nooby zone = too hard for you then wow sounds too hard for you maybe you should try a single player game?
Tho i still say nooby zone = way to damn small... i had this impreshion that all the humans should just bend over and take it. their is only 10 snufflers? and you farmers are too weak to handle this task? im not even sopose to be specail just a merc... so ya no diff then wow. everyone is lazy. how is this diff then wow? your not human so its understandable how later on in the game your power makes sence. Im elyos so forgive me if the other side has a diff starter zone.
I played 1-8 in channel 1 btw. It was the spores and the mushrooms that had the probs, 5 shrooms and 20 people. changed channels then. Other then that this just seems like a QQ.
Mob stealing? im a damn priest i never faced 1 killsteal. And its easy, a mage could totally KS over and over. Maybe you chose a bad server... but everyone just ignores my targets. you need to out dps the person to kill steal. call me a noob or not i totally attempted a killsteal in beta a few times... before i looked through the menus and went WOOT channels.
so grouping = unessesary... id say the gate is the 1 part i forgive you with, my priest had a few issues luckily i had a mage.
Killstealing not an issue. all you have said seems to be a channel issue ncsoft should have balanced the whole channel thing but they didn't.
The only issue i faced is the que. having a job and places to be was very annoying the whole early start felt like an early headacke. bragging about selling over 300 thousand copies and then unable to provide services was a slap to the face regardless. "were balancing" your gunna have to add a few more servers anyways. But since they balancing factions i forgive them. and day 1 was the prob. day 2 = 30min que for me anyways. wich is acceptable. it is not a whole job shift gone waiting to get in. i don't work weekens and i had monday off luckily or this early access really would mean nothing to me.
The games great, besides the que iv had no problesm that pritty damn good lets look at other mmo's and there promises... you know which ones i mean . The betas mised a few things id not let a beta ruin your oppinion on aion, the lag is gone, it was annoying but to be expected. great launch other then que. Lets hope tuesdays lauch doesn't make me eat my words tho.
Forgive any grammar errors or any other issues with my comments im drinking absinthe lmao... not an excuse i know but meh.

Yeah definately it will become better. What I mean is, why couldn't it work like this:
-Mobs that drop quest items should be among the most frequent mobs in the zone, not the least frequent.
-Dropped quest items should be lootable by all players in the party.
-Mob tagging should work like in other mmos (if I am first, it's my mob).
-Unique quest NPCs and fixed quest items should exist for all players simultaneously.
yeah it made questing easier, but it made little sense when a human mob dropped 5 heads.

True, but no worse than seeing a named mob respawn while its corpse is still there on the ground.
There is very little 'sense' to these games, unfortunately.
