direction or no direction? or half and half?

is it good to have direction in a game meaning having a linear path leading your character progression all the way to the "end"? how about leading you half way and then setting you free to your own devices?  A great character progression experience would seem like gold to me.

Without more info on what type of game you're talking about, I'd have to say all of these options could be fun when implemented the right way.

Yes, its always good to have some direction.  But let people choose to ignore that direction and choose their own path if they wish.  There should always be a path to follow though.  Most MMOs already have this.  The only definable path is getting from lvl 1 to Cap.  You can choose to get all the way there or you can choose to make lots of alts and never reach the "end".  You can follow quests.  You can ignore them completely.  You can solo your entire way.  You can group the entire way.  You can mix it up and do both.  You can PvE only.  You can PvE and PvP.  In some you ignore all the PvE and concentrate on just PvP.   MMOs already have plenty of paths to follow.  You just have to look.

MMOs that offer a choice are the ones most people want to play.
