It's so refreshing to find an MMO that combines depth and good gameplay with a unique concept.
Others have compared this to EvE and SWG meet Mad Max or The Postman - which I think is spot on. The gameplay, character building, gameworld, and crafting all have tremendous depth. The graphics aren't AoC but are still well done and fit the world perfectly - really gets you immersed in things. The world is huge and open-ended giving you tons of options on how you want to proceed. Combat is exciting - true FPS combat in an MMO. Tons of quests - according to the devs over 5000. Crafting is nice and complex. I havn't done much PvP yet but from listening to some guildies on vent it definitely got them going.
I wasn't sure I would like this when i got into it but it looked interesting and has turned out to be a real gem. Definitely my new game.

Yes I agree, I like the game alot.
Glad you like it, always good to get a new game which grabs your attention. I played the open beta and it just didnt grab me, it just seemed a little awkward to play and was slighlty boring running across a desert with nothing but tumbleweeds and scorpions for 10minutes.
Should a free trial become available I might give this a go, but until then i'll stay off for now. Wish you all the best in your new game I envy your early day excitement, these are the best times.
Despite the game not being perfect (although I have to say, technically it's quite excellent for a recently launched game, I had no lag last night at all, had constant 25+ FPS in town and 50+ outside, with all settings on max, and only 1 disconnection in 2 hours....), I think this could be either the next EVE in terms of moderate, but steady success and slowly increasing population, or even a quicker success. The inital reaction of most people is much more on the good side (no hpye - vs good game, the exact opposite of what we have seen from many "AAA" titles... Aoc...khm....Vanguard...kkrhm...), so... as long as devs keep being focused and dedicated, this will look like an interesting, and worthwile journey.

Now Playing: Guild Wars 2/ Diablo 3
Have to disagree with Carnivore on several points:
The graphics were actually much better than I expected. Compared to WAR or WoW they are terrific in my opinion. There is definitely some optimizining to be done in towns. If you played WAR or AoC at lauch you know those issues usually get cleared up pretty quick. That said, the problem is nowhere near as bad as WAR and AoC were for me.
Crafting is very complex and has no relation to Eve's system, which I agree is the best I've found. This makes me wonder if you have played either. I crafted Tech II in EvE using my own POS for over 9 months so I know EvE crafting. FE has a different system sure but as you get past the first tier of crafting it becomes much more complex - requiring you to refine materials or buy from others or build components which are then used for further crafting.
Bugs - If this is the first MMO you have played my friend - well I hate to break it to you but they all release with some bugs. This has far fewer than most I've played at launch.
Combat lag- I play with a group from Australia. I'm in the US. Some have ping problems some don't. Could be an ISP for all I know. I've seen some rubber-banding but since head start it's been cut down quite a bit.
To sum up - there are fewer bugs and lag than I've found in most games at launch. When I run into it I find myself just waiting it out because I'm enjoying myself in spite of the rought edges. That never happened to me in WAR or AoC - I got irritated because I wasn't having so much fun in those. For me, that's a very good measure of a game.
Have they improved it a lot since the end of CB? Whenever I entered a town I got terrible lag. It was hardly playable. I'm in Europe, but I've played on US servers in other games without problems.
Actually I think its the opposite on standards. I think they are so damn high that most games now fail due to this. FE does have some issues for sure as do all launches. Optimization does need to be finished and so do buggy quests but as they get ironed out I cant see another game coming down the pipe that will hold my interest and grab me like FE has done.
I joined FE over 8 months ago in the F&F Alpha, thus before Closed Beta even.
The shadows were horribly bugged and a huge crippling resource hog back then.... and still are today! Ridiculous!
AA and AF do jack sjit and everything still tears like hell.
Lot of the textures still have their low res placeholders.
The so called weather system is still totally absent!
Seriously, the game is pretty ok gameplay wise, but the whole game engine is very unfinished and horribly optimised!
Just wait till a large number of people start trying to PVP. I can hear the crying about horrendous lag and combat delays already echo'ing in the distance.

Yes, I have to say. I played in CB as well, and it was horribly laggy in towns, I agree.
Now I don't really get it at all!

Maybe because there are far less people on the server now.
Just saying.....

Nope. I played odd hours in CB, and that was early CB as well (I was there since Alpha). Lag is not even comparable.
Lag in CB was more likely swapping issue, loading terrain/textures etc.... it looked more engine-related. PING, rubberbanding was not a problem.
That loading issue looks the one which is sorted, the server was seriously crowded last night, and my FPS never dropped under 25 in South Burb.

this may become true at a later date, but right now the server is almost over populated but that was/is not the cause of the lag issues people were and some are still having. The lag issues are server side and has to do with their netcode not because of their server capacity. FE servers are set up like Eve-online, while user side we only see 1 server but on the dev side there are clusters of server handling different towns/sectors however they decided to break it up. Hopefully they continue going the eve route and update their server technologies to keep up with player demand (if there is any) instead of adding another server.
you lost all credability with this sentence alone. Unlike what most trolls think but bringing in fanboi comments is not a IWIN button. Just makes you seem silly and idiotic to resort to that shit.
It has been a common stab at FE to state their graphics are outdated. I am not quite sure I see where this is coming from since FE is non instanced and absolutely huge. I really cannot think of another game like it in terms of scope besides vanguard that has such large zones. You can honestly spot something in the horizon and ride towards it and not even get there after 5 minutes full bore. Nobody offers this type of setting anymore that in and of itself warrants some praise. I digress, as far as graphics go (oooOOOooo look its shiny) there are a few little things in the landscape that can get a little repetative but keep in mind the draw distances are amazing and the graphics are well well above average. I dont know what kind of hardware you are running but after a few days of playing I am still pleased with what I am seeing. More importantly I am pleased with what I am feeling.
You need an above average rig to milk the details out of this gem. It is a very pretty game if you have the right hardware.
At a time when the variety of mmos out there is increasing rapidly it is rare to find a game, and I can only speak for myself, that actually immerses you in its environment like FE does. It has truely been a pleasant experience for the most part.
Unfortunately I believe, and to each their own, that perhaps you are caught up in the look of a game more than the content. FE is not as pretty as a game like Aion but the soul of it just rips most other games apart. AoC, Aion, (insert linear theme park game here) can be attributed to dim witted supermodels. FE is more like that all American girl next store that you always think about and can have a fun and flirty conversation with. The two of you together are like milk and cookies. You complete each others sentences. Ok maybe I am going too far, but you get the point. I dont know its just the freedom of it all. The game is huge you really get a immersive experience.
The game certainly has its bugs but the staff really cares about the players experience and works hard for its players. I really get that feeling and it has shown since I started playing in open-beta. They have a GM on just about 24/7 and volunteers that are constantly helping players with issues. Player input is valued, the community is very helpful and friendly. The quests are well written. The vastness of a post apoc wasteland are evident and not to go as far as saying "you actually feel like you are in mad max" I think it is fair to say that as far as immersiveness goes it ranks amongst the best of the best in that reguard.
To be fair there are some things that suck about fallen earth imo. Namely the bugs which everyone can agree upon. Personally games I play always get a (-) point when water cannot be interacted with. Yup folks, there is no swimming in the apocolypse. Although the game has no classes theoretically, there are classes in a more discrete sense being melee, pistols or rifle, crafter with slight variations between the 4. I would like to see more variety if possible. A magic class thrown in would have been a bonus but the factions introduce mutations later down the leveling road which is more of a support combat style. An issue I have with the AP system which is used to assign stat and skill points is in order to garnish the most AP you currently need to go to each starter zone and do each of their versions of the AP quests. This leads to one player pretty much covering all sectors of each "sector zone" and leads to you garnishing so much EXP that you are moving thru towns 10+ lvls above the mobs you are killing to get that towns AP quests done. Of course this is a player preference but it should be addressed for many reasons. Again these are small peccadillos that tarnish very little the overall sex appeal of this game.
Overall I think this game will make a lot of gamers a new home.
Yeah, and this comment had won it back, you think? LOL. Priceless!

it is also the other way around, people point out the positives of a game and then a troll accuses them of being a fanboi. The truth is most trolls have no idea what they are talking about and is just basing their opinions on hear say. when these things are pointed out to said troll the "fanboi" comment gets played and said troll feels stronger thinking he won. I'm not saying you didn't know what you were talking about but the case is true for most. Trolls just aren't satisfied when their opinion does not winout whether it is something positive or negative it is all the same. In the end it does not matter what anyone else thinks of something other than yourself so i see no reason why threads have to be hijacked one way or another to try to sway someones belief that a game is top notch or piss poor.
Well, I accuse you of shallownes, cause the only thing you seem to care about are graphics.

Ok. If that's true would u mind quoting any of my posts where I am saying I am not gonna play the game because of graphics? Or where I said graphics were terrible? Or where I posted only graphics concerns?
The problem is I like the game but I am not blind. I can see tons of flaws it has. If u can't or ur standards are lower than mine then it's not my problem. But stop lying and posting BS like this.
To be not blind and see flaws does not equal calling someone a fanboy for liking such an extensively subjective feature, as graphics. You are pretty much stuck in your own point of view, not being able to see objectively here. Which is fine, as most people are like that, but you will have to accept that some will see this as trolling. Especially, when you use such heavy words as "lying" and "BS". Just a thought.

I'm not gonna quote all your posts, just gonna comment on them hehe :P
- Your first post starts about how bad the graphics are
- Your second post starts about how bad the graphics are
- Your third post is about nothing
- Your fourth post is only about graphics
- Your fifth post is about nothing
I don't really think you can disagree with this
I'm just saying that it appears to me, that the graphics of the game influence your opinion about the whole game too much or you at least focus too much on it, hence the reason I call you shallow
Well, I had fun doing it and maybe you learned something, although I doubt it
Why does every damn post on these forums turn into a flame war?
Seriously guys, stop fighting and discuss.
Agreed.
..and to elaborate for people considering this game: its not so much that the crafting system is a new system per se, but that it is more integrated into game play. mobs don't drop finished items (swords, lead pipes, guns) too often, they drop leather, wood, metal scraps etc. So there is incentive for crafting to some extent even if you are primarily a tank, rifleman/woman, medic. Also, making your own bullets, food, bandages is a lot cheaper.
The world is huge and you can get a horse at a low level and enjoy loosing it by exploring into areas you shouldn't be in. Actually don't do that it was a pain.

I tried it in closed beta. I liked it a lot, but will play it if / once they add housing, is the only thing i missed.
I'm level 17 and i've experienced 2 showstoppers.
One was in kingamn on the tire quest... it fixed itself after a reboot.. and I had a good hand in screwing it up.
The other was something so inconsequential that i can't even remember it.l
It's a good, fun smooth game.

We've got some good pros and cons here. I mentioned all the things I love in my OP post but you point out some very valid problems with the game right now. The swimming thing I forgot about since there is so little water I've seen in the world. This is a bummer though and doesn't feel natural at all when you bump into the edge of a pond.
The graphics definitely took some tweaking for me to get to a point where I liked the way they looked and had good performance. This was a hassle but I really like the world so I didn't mind as much as someone else might. Draw distance was a big one for me - 100% had a weird sudden fps hit so mine are all at 95%. I like the shadows, but i can see some spots where they do look out of place as you move along. Hopefully server and client optimizations will help this out down the road.
The "classes" do seem to revolve around the 3 big ones so far but I also see from the main forums that people haven't really had a chance to explore all that can be done with the skill system yet. Lots of questions about "has anyone tried this" but few responses so far. It could be great and offer alot of flexibility, or it could be that the skills most people use now really are the only ways to go which would be a problem. I think that would change down the road if so as the devs are very responsive and we would want more as players.
Tha AP problem is spot on. It does get old fast if you're trying to hunt down every bonus AP in the starter areas. I've been doing this and it would be nice if that system was changed or tweaked or something. This is the only part of the game i've found grindy so far.
Someone else mentioned housing. Really looking forward to that myself. There are quite a few features the devs have promoted putting in down the road. Only time will tell how the game develops but I certainly hope they keep up with the teasers. I know that Sector 4 is promised to come out soon as they indicated this and released a video and some photos today. Adding another 25% or so to the gameworld this close after launch would do wonders for my confidence in the future of FE.
On a closing note: I think this game will definitely appeal to a niche much as EvE has. I played EvE for years and put up with the lag and the constant rebalancing and such - waiting ages it seemed for features that had been discussed for years. But the depth of the game and the world kept me going. I'm hoping that FE builds over time the same way EvE has - adding new depth and adventure to keep you involved.
Good post Acolorado.
