Its all coming down to whats games you play if it has a lot of lighting like Doom3 go for NVidia but halflife 2 will run better on the ati. If its mianly for eq2 also go for NVidia(geforce)
The X800 Xt will probaly general beat the 6800 ultra. However the 6800 Gt is both faster and cheaper than the x800 pro- wheres the choice? The 6800 GT killed the x800 pro in most of the benchmarks. PC gamer doesnt even doubt that the 6800 GT is a better card.
True fact that the GeForce Nvidea 6800 GT Overclocked is pretty much the best there is in todays world. I have a x800pro and my brother has a 6800, our other specs are the same, and it is proven that the 6800 is a better Graphics card than the X800.
The x800pro loses badly to the 6800GT in over 90% of benchmarks I've seen. Plus the 6800GT is easily overclocked to ultra speeds plus. Mine runs great at 410/1120 with stock cooling.

Very nice, dual fans/oced for just as much as a normal GT card. People have reported similar results as you did, I might have to go for that card. The customer support is also supposted to be amazing. It has to be a improvement from my crappy 9700 TX(Dell).
Sounds like the 6800 GT is the way to go though if you are buying new. Now that I think of it, I must have been remembering benchmarks between the X800 Pro vs. 6600 GT. 6800 is a whole different story, so I stand corrected.
Just clocked my X800 Pro to XT speeds and it is completely stable. Used ATITool. The guy who had the X800 Pro should do that too (very easy and low risk, 520/560 is all you need to do then check for artifacts) then bench against your brothers GT. Almost all the newer X800 Pros are really underclocked and clipped XTs, because of high yields from ATIs plant, so most will run at the same speed.
Anyway, clocking to XT speeds alone, I went from 3590 on 3DMark 2K5 (free version) to 4068. Now I just need to unlock the rest of the pipes. I found out my chip has a high chance of success from the markings on it. Hopefully going to do hard-mod tonight then flash the XT BIOS and see where the scores are after that.

Btw, all of the 6800 GT OCs(at the same price as a normal 6800 GT) can run at or above the 6800 ultra. "Almost all the newer X800 Pros are really underclocked and clipped XTs"- not really, the x800 pro is crippled because of the 12-pipes(even if you overclock it to x800 xt), the 6800 GT can run the same as it's big brother.

yeah go for the x800 pro over the 6800gt if you like lower frame rates. I've owned both brands and had noting but good experiences with both. Whoever has the best bang for the buck deal at the time I'm upgrading is gonna get my business. It just so happens that the 6800GT is the best bang for the buck currently on the market in the high end and it's an excellent quality product.

That's what I meant when I said clipped. They just literally clipped one of the tracers on the PCB to disable the pipes. Some conductive paint on there is all that's needed to bring all online. Anyway, I don't disagree with you that right now the GT is the way to buy, but those of us already with X800 Pros don't need to spend money when there are other options.
Ati and Nvidia are both great companys. I enjoy working with the nvidia cards better. Me and Ati dont like each other. I have never really had very much luck with them. My roommate loves them. Personally I think Im going to try this sli stuff. Not on these cards I think Im going to wait for the next batch of pci-e cards. I know they are going to be a freaking arm and a leg. But I wont upgrade for along time so its ok. So ill have to wait to see. ((I vote nvida))SLI
But the thing is if i get into eq2 and my videocards starts blowing chunks. I might have to upgrade sooner than expected.

Anyway, if you already have an X800 Pro, there's a few hard mods to try that unlock all 16 pipes. There's also a soft-mod if you have a VIVO.
