Better crappy system?

Well, I'm really excited about getting into EQ2.  I played EQ1 for about 4 years before I moved and had to settle somewhere else.  But now I'm ready to jump back into Norrath.

But here's the thing...

I have two computers, and neither is really great.  They're both simply "okay".  But which would be the best one to run EQ2 on?

System number 1-

P4 1.5ghz, 512 megs of RDRAM, GeForce4 Ti4800 128 megs, Creative Audigy LS 5.1

System number 2-

P4 2.8ghz, 1gig of SDRAM, GeForceFX5200 256 megs (PCI), Creative Audigy LS 5.1

I'm not really a computer guy, obviously.  Which one of these would do better wrangling with EQ2?

If you could swap CPUs, put the P4 2.8 in sytem 1, then system one would be better. An AGP card is better the a PCI card, unless its a PCI express card.

Why in the world does your 2.8 p4 not have an agp card?  Is it an hp or something?  If possible, put the ti4800 in the second computer and you will be good.  If not, the 4800 isn't all that much faster than the 5200 so it'll still run alright.

I have a feeling the 1.5p4 with 512mb of ram would be like pulling teeth with all the hd thrashing and load times.

RDRAM is better then SDRAM, just need to buy another 512MB, if you can.

The difference is negligable and the price is rediculous.  Plus you still have it with a 1.5ghz processor.

Still think a AGP card is going to preform better then a PCI one. saw 512MB RDRAM going for $112, but is 600Mhz memmoy.

Let's just hope he has a free agp slot in the faster pc and for some reason isn't using it.  image

No AGP in the second system.  It's a Dell Dimension 2400 (a work computer that isn't needed for work anymore).

I'd love to combine all the best elements of both computers into one decent one, but that just isn't possible.

Woah!!!!  Switch the TI4800 for the FX5200 right now!!!

Okay, I've read benchmark reviews in between the Geforce 4 TI4200 VS the Geforce FX5600.

Let's stick to 1024x768 resolution.  The Geforce 4 TI4200 outperforms the Geforce FX5600 in everything by 10%!  10% is not much, but how come a new generation FX5600 card which was supose to be the "newest TI4200" is slower than it's old one?  Well if you must know, the 5600 outperforms the TI4200 when using 1200x800 resolution and above.  That's it.

    Now, theoritically the FX5600 is faster than a FX5200.  And a TI4800 is as fast as a FX5800.  Which is faster than a FX5600 and a FX5200.

So you can see where I'm going here.  Your TI4800 rocks... put that card in your best PC for ultimate performance.

Problem is... Geforce 4 TI series cards do not support DirectX 9.  So all pixelshaders, shadows, anti-aliasing supported only by DX9, if you manage to get working will be handled by your processor,  could lead to dropping framerate.  But believe me, it beats the FX5200 anyday.

Or just buy a Geforce 6800GT and no more worries. image

Agree, switch your Video Cards and use system 2.
