Jeff Kaplan was the lead quest desginer, left WOW for blizzards next gen and yet unannounced MMO. Given the success of WOW what could they possibly be working on ? Anyone know or care to speculate ?
World of Starcraft ?
World of Diablo ?
WOW 2 ?
I see constant posts comparing every MMO out there to WOW and people looking for something other then wow to come out. Would you look forward to another blizzard mmo ?

Given Blizzards track record, it will be nothing short of spectacular. Every game they have ever released has been a huge success.
I heard it was said that their new MMO is based on a band new IP. Regardless of my view of WoW, I can't wait for them to reveal it.
"Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun."
they said that its something that noones ever done before in a MMO.
Ya a dev on the WoW forums said it will be a new IP and that is why it is taking so long to give any details. They need to create the IP which, according to Blizz, takes a while.
Im looking forward to it. I think that since WoW is casual-ish, then Blizz wont make a game to compete but instead a less casual more "hard" style game.
like all any other company said before... and its always the same or at least, its never really something new.
And Blizzard never take any risk so i doubt they will show us something new. MAybe something better but that's all. Anyway, we'll see and if it's totally a new experience, hell yeah!
Stop complaining and move your ass.
I am quite sure it was said somewhere by Blizzard that they are not using any of their three existing universes, meaning Diablo, StarCraft and Warcraft.
They will develope something completely new for the next MMO which I think is really cool as it is a much bigger challenge to create a new world than just using an existing one, as that already lays out a lot of guidelines and content.
I hope it will be somewhat fantasy because Blizzard is fucking good at it and I prefer it over sci-fi themes, for MMOs at least.
Everyone says that. It's never true.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
WTF? No subscription fee?
Just like wow before it, it will simply be another asian-like grinder.
=D

We ran to the sounds of the thunder.
We danced among the lightning bolts,
and tore the world asunder.

With any luck they'll make up something entirely new, rather than just take one of their single player games and make it an mmo.
So tired of mmo's coming up with unoriginal settings, like WAR, AoC, Lotro..
I can't remember where but blizzard developers have been quoted on saying that it will be a fully new title with a different style of gameplay to get the market moving forward in design again.
Also i noticed Blizzard along with 12 other major gaming companies have team together to work on titles for project natal. Might be worth looking into
As Rothnir stated earlier, it will be a completely new IP.
something sci-fi ish or modern and it better have housing , not that it matters its blizzard it will sell millions and be huge with a huge following of haters and lovers and the forums will be full of love and hate
no more fantasy way too much of that is available
I created an account just to reply to this. Honestly, this is one of the most uneducated, ill informed comments I've ever seen on a forum.
AoC's setting was created by Robert E. Howard in 1932. LOTR was first conceptualized in 1937 and published in 1954. Lastly, Blizzard ripped off WARs setting when creating both Warcraft and Starcraft.
These ARE the original settings. Everything else has been copying their template ever since. AoC is a particularly unfortunate story because Hyboria is one of the most richly detailed fantasy universes in existance. Funcom really dropped the ball with that one.
Regardless, from interviews at Blizzard this new MMO is looking to target an even more casual market than WoW. They're also considering making the game F2P, which means microtransactions. Anyone expecting a hardcore game is going to have to look elsewhere, because it's probably not coming from Blizzard.
World of Sanctuary based off the Diablo games or a mmo based off Blackthorn.
What part of new IP do people not get?

You actually think they are going to make something new from scratch ? They haven't been innovative in over 15 years. What makes you think they are going to start now especially since they have less talent now than they did years ago. Until they prove me wrong, they're going to use something of old and make something brand new out of it. I hope they prove me wrong because I would love to see that happen.
At this point why would Blizzard even think about a new MMO? Their biggest competitor is themselves. That is awfull buisness. Until WoW bleeds massive subs there is no need for them to release a new MMO. Everyone likes to call new games a WoW killer, blizzards new MMO will be the wow killer.
Personally I think if blizzard was smart they would ride the WoW train untill it runs out of steam, all the while polishing a new MMO. Of course they would need to figure out a way to make sure their graphics were not out dated by the time WoW runs out of steam.

*Hrm* Battle chess 2?
Blizzard made their fair amount of junk games too, you just never heard of them. Starcraft ghost was one that they scrapped just before launch since it sucked badly. And they scrapped 3 almost finnished versions of Diablo 2 and started from scratch every time.
They did some interesting games, Diablo is still the best in my book, it was like nothing else at the time they released it. The first Warcraft game was also very nice.
Making a sci-fi version of Warcraft was fun even though "Spectacular" is a bit too much for me.
The last game they made that I really like was Warcraft 3, but it had Strain as boss and he is a god.
It will be interesting to see what their new MMO is but most of their successes are sequels of their older games (Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, and so on). The number of succesful IPs isn't actually that big (3). So while Blizzard is one of the better companies the amount of unique games they have created are rather small. Sequels sell well as EA also knows but it was a long time ago since Blizz actually created a brand new IP, that was 1997. Can they still do it?
Well, they do have Kaplan so they will probably pull it off but you really can't be sure until they released the game. They will also compete both with thelselves, Bioware (their old arch enemy from the late 90s) and with the game Jeff Strain spent many years working on, Guild Wars 2. Strain made Diablo, Warcraft 3 and laid the foundation for Wow. Don't count him out, he is the most talented person ever working for Blizzard and GW2 will be the first persistant world MMO without monthly fees or RMT shops.
Anyways will the next few years be interesting for us MMO fans.
I don't think so. To me it seems like the new MMO most likely is a Sci-fi game and they don't really attrct the same people as fantasy games do.
Think what you want of Blizz but but they are far from stupid.
Why would they make something new you ask?
Why did people invent the car?
Why did people invent computers?
Why do we wear shoes?
Seriously if you're asking "Why bother" than you must be an extremely apathetic person, or a bubdhist. But people create new things to change the way things are currently done, to be different, to explore the possibilities. It's human natures most endearing quality - Curiosity.
Why not make a whole new IP for a new game?! Otherwise we would be stuck with the same old iterations and renditions of Warcraft, Starcraft, Warhammer, Middle Earth concepts, and that is going to get boring after a while...
EDIT: In addition, No, it would be much smarter for blizzard to capitalise on their current success and branch into new forefronts, and making a new game udner a different genre is probably a good way of doing that, because you will be getting a high number of people who currently enjoy WoW moving unto or playing both games, thus creating an even bigger income for themselves, not to mention keeping their customer base within the same company rather than potential losses to other developing companies.
There is a downside to that though, in that it will somewhat monopolize the market in Blizzards favour (if it hasnt already) meaning that the potential for seeing new emerging games coming from other companies will decline to the point of obscurity or catering to niche markets. And it will take a global conglomorate to break into the market, something that NCSoft is capable of doing (but so far failing to impress us much with Aion [FlameShield: On])...
Well if anybody can and would do it right, it'd be Blizzard.
I still hope for the day of randomized dungeons a la diablo or dungeon runners to become mainstream in MMO's.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
Because they are bored and need to justify why some still collect a paycheck there ? They are even milking Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. It took them 10 years to even announce these games and then told everyone they need an extra 2-3 years to finish the those games. Miracles do happen but I think they are just bored.
Randomized dungeons are not new...... If I am not mistaken RoM does it.
Edit: my bad you said mainstream

Blizzard is smart enough to know that the gravy train won't stay on the tracks forever.
A good AAA MMO takes years to make. It would make no sense to wait until WoW's inevitable decline before starting work on its spiritual successor. By the time it was ready for release, Blizzard would have likely lost their domination of the genre.
They're just planning ahead. The new MMO was announced in 2007 so we're probably looking at a release date of 2011-2012. Does WoW have more than three years left at the top slot? .. I'd be very surprised if it did with all the new contenders; I can see its playerbase being slowly eroded as the influx of new MMOs provide abundant alternatives.

Some are forgetting about Blizzards first game of Warcraft was: Orcs & Humans, not really a quality game, but not a crapper either. Blizzard has made some bad games but they also pulled them when it would not work out. Anyone remember Hellfire: Diablo expansion? That was a crap game.
I built my first PC right around when Starcraft was released. It was one of my favorite games for years, right up there with quake and counter-strike.
I have a pretty big list of favorite games, but many games I like only for some certain reason, while the rest of it might suck or have problems, but Blizzard games (Starcraft D2 WC3 WoW) are in a class of their own. I never had any major technical issues with a Blizzard game, they are all fully polished, have rich stories, graphics, and music. Sure I've seen graphics that are technically better, but what does that matter when it doesn't fit? Their games are like art, and that is really all it boils down to for me, and I honestly can't say that for any other game company.
