Hi,
I really loved the Fallout series and love the theme that Fallen Earth sets out to work with. However, I've never played Fallen Earth, and I have to say that one of the major reasons is because the graphics look worse than any 49$ USD MMO title I've ever seen in the last few years.
I think I can deal with lesser graphics to some extent, but I mean.. come on. The landscape looks like a 2 color texture that stretches for infinity, dotted with straight trees, cars with checker board texture boxes.. it's really ugly.
Further to that, they completely throw you out of game immersion by making corpses immediately pop up with a swarm of flies flying about it in some 2D animated way that reminds me of Duke Nukem 3D graphics, or if not flies.. a huge glowing skull spinning round and round above a newly fallen corpse.
I mean.. wtf? This is retarded, plain and simple. Can someone explain to me how they've managed to look past these silly things, and what the game has to offer beyond its nightmarishly-bad gameplay videos? And if you've played before and can say that the gameplay videos do indeed reflect the seemingly poor quality of this game, please help me out by confirming that this game is just a pile of post-apocalyptic manure.

hmm, well, first of all we have to take into account that this is, above all, a game. For immersions sake the bugs flying over a person is preferable to say, an arrow, or a flashing color, or some pretty blue sparks... I feel it aids immersion a bit rather then hinders it in comparison to other games.
As for the graphics.. on high they are actually more then decent, but high quality is very taxing on my system. Running middle of the road isn't bad for me though... I can see everything clearly and it may not be AoC but it gets the job done and I feel it is much more enjoyable then WoW.
As far as the colors go, you are right, so far I've seen very minimal colors, but if you've ever played fallout 3 you have about the same color palette.. and I don't really see that as being a problem. If anything it makes the areas with more color that much more special.... kind of like a post apocalyptic oasis.
The combat is by far more fun then the traditional MMO of click and wait.... at least for me. Coming from a wide background of shooters, rpgs, and adventure games, this is right up my alley, but the combat system probably isn't for everyone. The subject matter as well would probably also not be for everyone.
If you liked fallout though, --- if you truly liked it --- then I would say this is the closest thing to a fallout MMO you've got right now. Honestly I would have never bought this game myself.. it was bought for me for my birthday, but now that I've played it, I couldn't thank my friend more for getting it for me.
I beta tested it a bit, Its fun in a way but all the problems you said are pretty much there. But some of them arent problems. All these new ideas like crossing mmorpg with fps and fighting games fail hard. I dont think many can disagree the old mmorpgs were awesome. Maybe they need to stop trying all this "NEW" stuff and just make an awesome oldschool mmorpg the only twist excellent graphics. Take all that wasted energy used on fixing something that was never broken.Tired of trying all these next gen mmorpg's just to be horribly disapointed and go back to the ones I was playing for years just to get a tatse of a real game.
I would seriously suggest playing the game until you reach sector 2 and then deciding if you like it or not.
The first 15 to 20 levels just get you familiar with the game. Also as you get in the next sector the landscape changes a lot..
But as far as bleak versus realistic, I live here in AZ and they did a great job showing the barren low desert areas as they really are. The only thing I did was in the settings file you can increase the amount of vegetation, and I did so to 150% which now accurately shows how it really looks here.
The high terrain area in AZ is very much like Sector2 and 3 illustrates it, pine trees so cactus, weeds etc..
Game play wise, I was in game since alpha and did not plan to buy this game. I thought like you that it was sub par, but once I actually played and looked a bit beyond the graphics, the story and mission are really good and there is enough element to pull you in.
Of course most players of traditional MMO's wont like the game since you do have to think a bit more than most mindless games, but as a change of pace I am playing it, and when I want mindless I am playing Aion atm..
Don't know if that qualifies as being a fanboi, but for me I like the game, not totlaly in love with all aspects of it but its nice to play something a bit more changeling ever now and then in the MMO line.
maskedweasel, I'll be curious to know what you think after you've play for a while. I'll probably pick this one up in about a month. Its good to hear you're liking it so far. I enjoyed my time in the beta for FE, but got caught up in that *other* MMOG beta before I could get past level 10.
I love the standard trolling line that demonstrates this person knows exactly what the game is, and that they are the inevitable voice of reason, whose doesnt have an opinion, but rather they speak only the truth.
Bottom line, if you dont like what it looks like, dont play, it's obviously not a game you'd enjoy playing. I'd venture a guess that some folks care less about what a game looks like, and more about what it offers than you do.
Please help me out confirming that you are really doing little else than trolling. In addition, please confirm that you really dont understand why people dont all like the same things as you.
If you don't like it, don't spend your money on it. But since time is money, why are you spending your time here? Seems a little bit R on your part.
If you don't like it, don't play it.

what ticks me off is all this talk about the graphics being bad.. the models look really good, the textures look really good.. people just expect stupid ammounts of bloom and particle effects... oooh shiney... whatever.. get over it.
besides, mmo's always looked inferiour to their offline cousins beause there is so much more to them
The main problem for me was with the graphics that the anti-aliasing didn't work (or didn't work well). But once I followed someones advice to set the settings of my graphics card to do the job of anti-aliaising FE, and told FE to not even try, the graphics improved a lot, and now they look all fine and smooth.
Already posted that in another thread, but anyway:
here with old settings (check the tower and stuff in the background):
daemmerung.org/images/FE/FEme.jpg
and here with anti-aliasing of FE turned off (except that, both screenshots are from the game with exactly the same settings and resolution):
daemmerung.org/images/FE/sunset.jpg
Now I'm perfectly fine with the graphics. The animations are ok (like when you get up and down from a horse), the viewing distance is incredible too. The only downsides are that some of the textures a bit a bit blurred/low quality, and that there is no weather stuff. The shadows of buildings and objects and stuff are a bit chunky too, but they are dynamic, changing according to the daytime. Night I'd prefer to be a bit darker, but oh well...
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
Thanks to those who gave constructive reviews on their experience, which is what I was asking for.
Any additional feedback you can provide would be nice. I'm starting to see more positive comments here than negative.
And to the troll-hunters determined to whack something in the name of forum justice, move along please to the next thread.
I'd say, the first real dungeon (Junk Fortress?) looks pretty nice... textures good, lighting OK, design fine... it should be seen before any quick judgement about the whole game in terms of visuals.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
i didnt even hear of this game till my friend said take a look at fallen earth, i was open beta testing Aion till about lvl 27. After i heard it was taken from a topographical map of the grand canyon, and your mounts were vehicles of some sort i said what the hell ill try it and it is the desert there are forests too but its in the next area from the starting area, so what do you expect?
this is such a breath of fresh air, if you have your setting on high to very high they are very intricate and detailed actually i dont know about what 10 year old MMOs you played. It is skill based you can do what you want. It has one of the most intricate and economy based crafting systems, makes me want to craft
the combat is more twitch based than most and i like how you can whip out a pistol or dual pistols or a shot gun any time to blow something away, the complex nature of buildings you can go into open and close doors will make for some interesting combat and pvp you can go to the 2nd floor of a building and watch people go by, its really interesting
or just zoom in and headshot some wandering mobs
Like Aion? Or everything else?
Seriously, for every person out there that is sick and tired of the stale MMO combat formula, I cannot believe there are people prosposing we stay stuck in the mechanical dark ages even longer. I'm not satisfied withy EQ-style combat anymore, and if MMOs stuck to it for another 10 years I'd quit playing them all together. I recommend you go back to EQ or whatever first game you played, because with your mentality - these high-graphic clones you wish for are not going to cut it for you either. Another case of players not really knowing what they want I'm sure, but I KNOW you don't want EQ with a new skin - or you'd be playing EQ 1 or 2 again.
As for graphics, I put them on par (or a little better) with Star Wars Galaxies. The world looks fine, the characters could use some work, but for what the game does i am totally willing to overlook that.... I play Wurm Online man. Models are horrible and lack animations, but the game does things that NOBODY else does - that is what matters, and that is why I play it religiously.

No I'd hardly call them 10 year old graphics. I find them quite good.

Actually I do want a eq1 with a new skin. People bad mouth the game so much saying it was not solo friendly or only hard core people got anywhere. People these days have gotten so used to the easy style of play they forget that a mmo was supposed to be about the online community. I still have friends that I got to know from EQ back in 99 that I keep in touch with. The normal monsters were for the most part tougher than you were as a single player, this helped promote grouping and social interaction. In todays games I can solo my way to max level without ever having to group or talk to another player. Makes me think I have bought a normal platform single player game that I am having to pay a monthly fee for. I agree there has to be something for the casual player but in dumbing down our games so much we have gotten away from what I think is one of the most important parts of a mmo, comunity and meeting new people. If I wanted to play a game without social interaction I would go play Elderscrolls or somthing like that.
Yeah the low poly count is kinda meh, and the lack of any real research into things such as the true mechanical operation of objects, or true to life architecture elements shows. But it is an Indy game, so your expectations should be lower.
Graphics arent the greatest no but there far from the worst and no where close to being dated 10yrs, there graphics are reasionable for a MMO.

ceased to be agreeable to all its constituent States, but when it was upheld, like any other Empire, by force of arms."
The problem with the current games that follow the old eq pattern like wow and aion is they have even less variety in classes than eq did, and pale in comparison to something like daoc. The main problem I am finding with games today is the variety and choices are even less. They're more of a game than a world. Then you get into skill based and a lot of them give you the illusion of choice, but have even less.
It just seems the genre is getting dumbed down to me.
As far as fps, I'm not a big fan of it in my MMOs, but I don't mind devs trying. Maybe someone will surprise everyone and make a gem of a game. I actually like that there are different styles of MMOs made, even if I find most of them to suck. I just keep hoping one of the games will shine through, whether it is old school style or something completely new.

I agree that it is not close to look like ten years old.

I have asked thisa few times before. This is only two(three) screenshots where would it look like ten years old?
Lowest setting vs Highest settings.
How the textures look like at different distances.
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

You are absolutely right, the game looks terrible and should be put out of its missery ASAP.
Ever tried driving a car in that game? No? :P I swear; you will stop what you are doing, and so will everyone else who sees it, and then there will be silence as everyone is trying to figure out if its real or some sort of sick joke. And then you will laugh out loud and delete the game from your hard drive.
The physics in the game are from the same timeperiod as the graphics are from... Yea, its that bad.
If the new battlefield or COD game would have looked like that im pretty sure there wouldn't be ONE old fan who said "gameplay > graphics!". Its 2009, we can have BOTH gameplay and graphics as seen over and over and over again now 5 million times, so get over that retarded cliché.
And yea "buhu play something else"... Fallen Earth could have been a great game because the sandbox and combat system seems to be allright... but when it looks like this? No f-ing way. I have self-respect.

So..umm...why are you here?
Seriously? There are games I dont like, but I dont hang in thier forums posting anything.
Its a little wierd...

Apparently not since you're trying to argue with FPS vs. MMORPG. But let's talk about games and graphics. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Remember that game? It was a great game and it had a lot of variety, but the graphics were kinda bleh, with the character graphics, other than the main characters, being pretty piss poor and textures were pretty minimal. The characters didn't even have fingers. Yet, the game was one of the better one in the series and the best selling game on the Playstation 2.
Your argument is purely subjective and opinionated. Trying to pass it off as fact or that your opinion matters over everyone else's is simply stupidity on your part.
