WOW and kids

Every kid, including the three I have by my own, wanna play the same games as their friends. It dosnt really matter if its the "best" game in the genre as long as their friends are laying it. If I ask them about why they still play WOW or CS thats what they tell me. They KNOW there are better games out there, but that dosnt matter since their friends arent playing them.

So theres the reason why so many kids play WOW.

Should rename the topic to MMOs and People. Lot of people stick to certain MMOs because friends/family do. WoW is no special case.

  • daemondaemon Member UncommonPosts: 680

Since its the most played MMO overall... of course its the most played by kids and females also.

    Everybody knew that, old news.

I think WOW is a special case since that game prevents all other MMOs from being successful, and everyone still wonders why...

You cant beat WOW at being WOW. Sadly, developers don't realise that, and they keep making WOW copies that fail and fail and fail... year after year after year...

The whole MMO industry is at a complete standstill when it comes to innovation because everyone thinks they have to make a better WOW to compete with WOW... That will never work because kids will keep playing the same game that their friends are playing.

At the same time, there is zero MMOs for the age group 18+... AOC did it right with the nudity, graphics, blood and gore, etc, but the game is basicly a WOW copy underneat the hood. Making it very boring for most adult minds.
They need to make it sandbox.

Older people (your group) is very reluctant to change their internet and games.
Why change games if you already play the one you are feeling comfortable with?

Yea i can only speak from my own experience, and all my friends play games like Crysis and Battlefield while all our kids play games like WOW and Lotro. I dont know if its the other way around in your social group but thats how it is here. Im 36 and live in Sweden if it matters.

Me and my friends dont have a problem moving from Quake ---> Quake 2 ---> Quake 3 ---> BF1942 ---> BF2 ---> COD4 ---> BF2142 ---> Crysis, etc, etc, etc while our kids: WOW. End.

Seriously? I hear this a lot. Before you pull the "fanboy" card, I hate the direction WoW is taking right now. But you can't blame that shit on WoW. What they did was raise the bar. If other companies can't hack it, it's their fault. They should try some creativity.

Their are a few companies that are far from a standstill. BioWare and surprisingly Cryptic oh and CCP if you count Dust 514. All three are introducing new innovative features into the MMO world. ToR probably being the most innovative. And can you please explain to me the appeal of a 18+ MMO with nudity and such. I can understand blood and gore. But nudity? That's innovative to you? Well maybe you will enjoy Playboy Manager. Nudity being the appeal is a fkn joke.

If you can't deal with themepark games, look into the upcoming sandbox games.

I freaking hate WoW, but that's why I picked it back up about a year ago. Everyone I knew played, so I was like "wth".

?!? SW:TOR innovative? You must be joking? Please share with me and the rest of the world what kind of amazing new innovative features that game has?

If you need an explanation to why 18+ people like nudity... your probably too young to hear the explanation... ;)

(seriously... you need an explanation why adults like nudity?!? omg)

There ARE no upcoming sandbox games from big companies. Only "indy" games.

Well that is true. When you get enough of kids doing something many other will follow, no matter if it is magic the gathering card, Wow or something else.

The problem is to get enough of them to start playing your game, and that was what Blizzard succeded in.

I am not really sure how they made it, Wow got popular with older players from the start because they played Blizzards other games. Maybe they let their kids or smaller siblings try the game?

Gladly. Story Drive MMO"RPG" where your actions change the worlds view of you. Where your story will drive you in different directions, example being skills and abilities being affected not by the points you choose to put into a tree but your actions in the world. Here is another one MMOs are lacking. Replay Value, deep class story where you are motivated to actually level up multiple characters. Another good one, FULLY voiced. Not like AoC, lol, Tortage. And BioWare has barely released information on the game. Wait and see what else they have to offer

That's pretty hilarious. Considering the pixelated tits draw teenage boys, not many adults. You will have to excuse me, im not into cybering. I like my adult content to be more realistic then AoC, so I'm saying real life. Also since you enjoy this type of stuff, why not give MO a try. It has all the bewbs and penis "you" could dream of.

And the new stuff...? Seriously, NOTHING of what you just wrote are new to the MMO genre. NOTHING. Its just more of the same old stuff. Even more cartoon graphics, levels, auto-attack and auto-aim, classes, quests and mindnumbing boring grind, grind, grind, grind, grind to become like everyone else having the same gear, the same stats, etc, etc, etc, in absurdum.
Its not even clear if its an MMO at all since the whole game seems more like a cartoon version of Mass Effect. Minus the innovative and very good combat system Mass Effect had. Oh, and they removed the ability to freely travel. And the nice graphics. And the ability to have sex with aliens. ;) The list goes on... basicly they just removed everything innovative about Mass Effect and made it into a WOW clone instead.

Its shit. No. Its the SAME OLD shit.

Its amazing how a company like BioWare, that are renowned for their innovative game titles, can go and make such a game as SW:TOR.

Im not trying to make fun of you, but if you want to I can go through your post sentence for sentence and show you that all of those things you think are "new" and "innovative" in fact are very very old and just the same old shit we've had for years and years.

I cant, even if I try, and belive me I have tried since im a huge fan of BioWare, find a SINGLE innovative feature about SW:TOR. Not ONE. :(

Personally im really looking forward to Teras no targeting system and its using lines of tankers. Granted, while personally i will be very pleased, the games not likely to be anymore of a revolution than Aion is at the moment. But we really need to start looking beyond WOW. What we need is niche games more in the style of EVE that are meant for demanding gamers and not the general public. And stop this silly expectation of a WOW killer coming along. A game consistently holding 1 mil subs would be a huge success, especially if it manages without it becoming a wowish dumbed down verion of itself.

The genre is in serious need of deep mechanics (and no, not sandbox, except maybe in some elements) and sleek functional UIs, if you add this to a good amount of content and solid gameplay from the day of launch, youd have a succesful "premium" MMO. The IP becomes the least important of factors, good style and decent graphics being a given.

Solid games are more important imo than inovative ones at the moment. We need good precedents of success to get the companies willing to invest on the concepts that would become revolutions in the genre. Yes, for kids games will be more about social networks and we can all be somewhat thankful they do seem to flock a bit more towards WOW than other games.

    Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

to be honest the average WoW player is between 18-32 just like most mmo's. People just tend to be immature over the internet where there really aren't any punishments for them acting in such a way.

So, rather than being glad your kids are doing something they enjoy with friends...you wanna bitch because they aren't playing "better" games?

if you guys are looking for a WoW killer, FFXIV is the one

i dont see how WoW is gonna win game play - wise beside the huge fan base they got

yes, FF's fan base is not as much as WoW's due to the popularity from the 1st release and there werent many games like WoW at that time

but you should look at the game play of FFXIV, nothing in WoW can beat the System FFXIV is gonna use

    So What Now?

I dont understand why everyone uses kid(s) to describe WoW players when the majority of the people I know playing WoW are older people. Other than my 15 year old son, our guildmates are made up of 28-65 year olds, husbands, wives, grandparents, some working, some retired...just a little bit of everything. As much as I dislike WoW personally, they have done an excellent job of making a game that anyone can play, anytime they want and cater to many different playstyles.
