Badger, thank you for the well thought out post. It is much appreciated. Saying that, and as a fellow SWG subscriber, I do have a question. Did you even look thru the vet refuge? The community has been trying to get this accomplished for the last three years and SOE simply says no. Again, thank you for the effort on the write up. It was done well.
Badger has finally arrived at where most of us were in 2005. When the NGE disaster was imposed on everyone with very little warning, we first asked for a rollback simply to a functional game. Chat, combat, movement were all fubar. All we could do was stand around and send mail saying, "hey is your movement and chat completely broken too?"
When we were told that a rollback was a non-starter, we asked for "classic" servers. Live and let live. NGE folks want to play fps, 9 professions etc? Fine, just allow us a server to enjoy our skill system, player-based economy, creature-taming, more strategic combat, recently added content for all the deleted professions etc..
While most of us were asking for a classic server of some sort, I remember Badger busily supporting the NGE. Serious bugs were highlighted by many others, and he would suggest a ridiculous work-around like running around in circles to try to break the screen aggro/instant death caused merely by being foolish enough to use the new area heal for docs.
It took a while before instead of supporting the NGE, Badger actually started listing serious bugs and issues. Eventually I think he got this up to about 17 pages. I acknowledge that as a positive contribution, btw. But, now he talks about classic servers? Now?? Where were you 4 years ago man, when a classic server might have actually made a difference?
Four years ago he was flaming those of us who were advocating what he is advocating now.

As he did with all the CHANGES that hit SWG since the NGE, even. Badger and I had an about 2 hour IM over C6CD where he tried but just couldn't quite CHANGE my mind over the entire ordeal.
He's not dumb and probably sees the handwriting on the wall now, also. Just a little later than most of us did.

Yes I remember when you told me of that conversation way back when. The game was stable, maybe even making a bit of a comeback until then. After that began the slow and stead decline to the emptiness we have today.

You bet your ass they do.
Just listen to the rantings of the new community manager is all you need to confirm that. After only a few days on the job he was calling his customers cry babies and whiners for not appreciating the hard work that went into the game (in reference to the loot cards no less). I'm sure he didn't get that sentiment from his whole 3 days on the job, but I bet he did pick that up from his training with the people he works with. He was emulating what he saw in the office so as to fit in.
Seeing that they never printed a retraction of his words just shows that is how they feel about what he said.

I LOVE that line Fishermage! That's gotta be the best one line summary of SoE I've ever read.
And sadly, Daffid011 is spot on. Draakull is the best example yet of how SoE views it's customers. GREAT observation Daffid.
They put in NGE on purpose SOE didn't like that lucasarts mmo was becoming better then there baby everquest. now that the damage is done they might as well as add classic server. fact SOE refuses to add classic server for swg but they did for EQ shows that they want swg to die. thats why i think bioware star wars will be the best because bioware cares unlike SOE to bad swg was in charge by SOE heck even EA could done better.

One of the things that keeps me from playing an SOE game is the lack of respect they seem to have for gamers. I see this when they make wholesale changes regardless of how it affects their players, when they seem to give people misleading information about their plans for the game , when they get into pissing matches with gamers on the forums, or when they seemingly abuse their powers of moderation.
Truth be told, StarWars and the Matrix are two of my all time favourite IPs. The only reason I chose not to play those MMOs was because of how I felt SOE treated its customers. The IP candy wasn't sweet enough to cover the bitterness of their customer relations.
Woah, that was in 2006? I spoke to the Devs about this a lot more recently than that, I think they could do it and that they would probably enjoy doing it, but whether it's worth doing at this point? Not sure.
As said, it was pretty much the community and the fact that it was such an innovative game at the time that made SWG what it was, time has certainly marched on.
I think its worth a try and i know that alot of ppl i know would come back if even only for a few to see how it goes. Honestly it might be to late but just in this thread you have ppl willing to come back and theres many more out there that would also. Sure some wont and i know alot of ppl that stay totally away from SOE games and even LA games over precu but still think its worth a shot to do it. Only way i know of to really find out if its worth doing is to go ahead and just set it up and see what happens.
Edited to add
Im sure lots of ppl are mad at SOE/LA for killing PRe-cu and Cu and going with NGE (sadly enough lack of finding another mmo i like keeps me that way). If these devs are willing to set up a Precu or even Cu server ill bring back my 30 dollars a month for two accounts for a working unupdated version of any incarnation of those systems.
Disclaimer: I do not work for SoE, nor have I ever, nor will I ever. I once was part of a player volunteer program that SoE ran but that was about it, I have no say in what SoE does. With that out of the way, I thought it would be interesting to discuss how SoE could go about Origin/Classic SWG Servers, if they ever had the time, resources and inclination to bring them up. I discussed this with SWG Developers long ago and they seemed keen on the idea, but the live game always takes presedence so this was always a pipe-dream. It's fun to talk about dreams though, so what would you like to see in the way of Origin/Classic SWG Servers? They would likely be brought up as part of the Test Center servers and receive only maintenance updates, no additional content. Which patch level would you want to play, if at all? Patch Level Pre-CU: Pre-publish 9 Pre-CU: (Literally just before the Combat Upgrade) CU: Just before the NGE.
With no added content i hope its F2P lol rofl but it wont be you can count on that...

SWG, in general, should be F2P - they make a ton more off the TCG as it is. A month of subscriptions hardly pays a Devs salary for a year. They'd be better off just giving in and going F2P with the TCG as the source of revenue.

I still would not play it even if it was free, the star wars title and $OE are just dead to me now.

What if they offered a choice of 3 version - Original (+JTL), CU and NGE servers to play on? Would that make motivate you to login? Keep in mind that you wouldn't give SoE a cent unless you purchased something...they are banking on player greed/desire to support them via the TCG.
Offering 100 different versions of the game wouldn't change anything in my opinion. It is not the games that need changing and without addressing the core problems of soe the same results are simply going to be repeated over and over again.
Their greed would fuel some new idiotic change to the games direction or gameplay that would just result in the same situation soe games are currently in and further alienating the community that does remain.
In other words I do not trust soe not to do something completely pants on head retarded, because they neither understand nor care about their customers.
As for SWG going free to play, I have seen their efforts in that area with free realms and I don't like soes approach to free to play model.
Listen to what free realms players think of soes free to play model and tell me if that is encouraging. LINK

Whoa...interesting read. Thanks for the link.
I wasn't suggesting F2P would be "good" as much as I was trying to point out that $15/mo. + TCG is incredibly BAD! Guess even their F2P game suffers from horrendous mismanagement as well...unreal...how exactly did SoE land the DC license?

I would not play the card game.
In the free trials for my 2 accounts i just open what ever free ones I get lol.
If I did play i would not put a cent into the game, I don't care for the pvp, I did it just for fun and it was a blast back then.

It is a thread where current free realms players are complaining that soe doesn't even bother to communicate patches with the playerbase anymore. How they stealth nerf cash shop items after people have bought them and not refunded money for them. How they removed items from players inventories without even mentioning it. Some complaints about the content patches not working, etc.
Overall just a general lack of trust in soe based on how they are running the game.

In other words, business as usual for SOE.
That's the beauty of aiming at a younger audience. You can get away with shit like that more often because generally speaking, tweens don't tend to do a lot of consumer research before making purchases (consumers doing research is a huge thorn in SOE's side... dang internets!), plus since people are stupid (with kids being the lowest on the intellectual totem pole, according to past experience based on how SOE treats it's customers), nobody's gonna notice when SOE deletes items people pay for... right? I can smell the SOE marketing execs sparking up their stogeys from here. Brilliant!
For me this ship has sailed. SOE will get my money for a play of the DC game when they release it but I'm looking at that as much more of my console buying state of mind I want to experience it for myself and to pay homage to DC and my comic roots nothing to do with SOE. I'm sure the game will suck as the others they make do and I won't play past the first free month. but as far as Galaxies goes just off of principal they couldn't get money from me for that again. I would feel like I really have nothing good going on in my life to return to a company and a title that has so wronged it's players in everything it does from planning to implimentation of it's ideas and it doesn't help that most of the ideas they do have are usually not good ones anyway.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Sure! Here's the OP's post in its entirety.
I think it's time for another one of these threads. In the last few weeks, we've gone without hearing anything about the actual changes being made in the game. We've had meatballs disappear on us with no warning when they weren't supposed to. The pizza box has now gone to one slice maximum allowed to be in your inventory with no one even telling us. We've had the skeleton effect from the haunted headstone changed to five minutes with no word from anyone. We've been lead to expect the vault was going to have soccer clothing and there isn't. I know tons of players that would like to be informed of every change that is made in the game that we play and also pay for. I come on the forums everyday and see a new thread about a change that the Free Realms team has made that we were never informed about. Especially when you're spending 1000 SC on an item and it is completely nerfed into something that is 1/12th as effective as it used to be. This has just become completely ridiculous. I see people leaving day after day because of these decisions. Something really needs to change soon because this is just becoming completely unacceptable and we're not going to sit here and just watch this game be run down into the ground because of these decisions.
The replies after this back up the OP's claims.
Again, this brings me back to something that is REALLY bugging the hell outta me...how did SoE land the DC License? Does DC have any idea who they've hired? Sadly, practices like this are not uncommon for SoE and this is not an isolated incident. SoE has an established pattern and has a known MMO reputation of being a deceitful company...who in their right mind would hire SoE to do **edit**?! It's like none of the decision makers know d!ck about gaming, so they trust and listen to Smed. What a buncha nerds :P

Whoa I can smell that dead horse, but i can't see it anywhere.

As i can not log in there can some one repost it here ?

I see nothing much has changed with them at all...

Thank you for posting that here.
It is very sad to see them up to there old tricks. but not unexpected...
Unfortunetly, yes they will.
