Yeah I remember how good Pirates of the Burning Sea looked also. Beautiful screens of all the ships. I have a bad bad feeling this is going to be setup exactly like it. No free form exploring, only lots of instanced missions.
Well I'm a huge SW nut and a meh ST nut, but I'm all for sci-fi mmorpgs.
I'll be trying both of them out and which ever one tickles my fancy is the one I'll stick with...heck, if they're both pretty dang good I'll just have to have to keep both accounts going
The more I see the character art, the more I like it....BUT...
On the otherhand the more I see the ship artwork the more I am turned off....
I am so sick of the JJ Abrams Star Trek'ish ships.
When will people realise what made Star Trek great, wasnt modernised ships, it was the story that Gene Roddenbery laid down. I am not after a "NEW" Star Trek, or a "reimagining" of it. I want Gene Roddenbery's Star Trek. With Constitution Class ships, and Mirandas, with the Bird of Prey and K'Tinga D7....... None of these star ships that lack a saucer section for the federation, or federation ships that can cloak, and fire plasma weapons, and have disruptors..... or Purely combat federation vessels.. thats NOT Gene Roddenbery Star Trek... idiot like JJ Abrams idea of Star Trek.
I am laughing at all of you people who think TOR would be any less a debacle the WAR was ( i can care less if its Bioware making it considering who their Parent company is ). Never mind the fact that LucasArts is having some of their "staff" to be exact the same folks who destroyed SWG working with them? You have to be on some good weed to believe that they wont screw up TOR as well.
Secondly at least Cryptic has already developed MMO titles, can't say the same for Bioware....
Thirdly, dumbed down graphics because it is on a console? Most of you "gamers" never play on top end PC's anyways so your point is moot about that. The Average gamer ( which btw is your LARGEST DEMOGRAPHIC AND THE BIGGEST MARKET ) uses PC's that are least a year and a half behind the curve when it comes to the latest and greatest in PC hardware so it doesn't matter.
But in the end of the day, established IP's usually flop, ( The Matrix Online, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan , Star Wars Galaxies , Dungeons and Dragons Online, LoTRO to name a few) . The only one really that survived and thrived was World of Warcraft. So for all I know STO and SWToR can both flop or they can both boom. Their is really NO POINT in s saying one is better then the other at this stage when none of them have went live ( considering also one company has NEVER MADE an MMORPG while the other has made at best lukewarm MMO titles ) .
Everything I've heard about this game is pretty much negative in my book. When first announced of a Star Trek MMO I was on top of it every week. Now I dont even care anymore. Its just like they took a great "cant loose" idea and are trying to market it to everyone BUT the conventional Star Trek fans. Consoles? No interiors at launch? NPC pets? One person per ship? Might as well make this another single player Trek game. StarTrek are probably some of the most diehard and geeky of all fans. You can sell them a 50cent piece of plastic and tell them its dilithium crystal to get $100 for it. Cryptic it seems doesent recognize its fans and is going to do the same thing. Another failure waiting to happen, but only after they weed out the suckers in the first 3 months.
The Old Republic will be no better or worse than Star Trek Online. No real way to compare them since they are two different experiences, just as the movies were. I never understood the point of comparing Star Wars and Star Trek. Totally different. Granted nobody can deny the impact Star Trek has had on the modern world. We owe everything from cell phones to tele-transportation devices(still experimental, but I know the Duke University physics department has one of the tele-transportation device sites) to Star Trek. So far all we have from Star Wars, in real life is cinema effects, though I certainly cannot discount that being in the industry myself. Star Wars is simply designed around fantasy where Star Trek was based off of real science. Both have their place in the canon of classic Science Fiction.
Yeah and I'm sure none of this shit would exist if it wasn't for Star Trek, give me a break......
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

So much crap, so little quality.

Nice looking screenies!
I dunno what it is. I am a big Trekkie, but the more I hear and see about this game, the less excited I get about it.
I can't quite put my finger on it, but something is missing.
I'll still try it anyways on the off chance I'm going crazy and it's a really fun game.
Einherjar_LC says: WTB the true successor to UO or Asheron's Call pst!
Another Trekkie here.
