Kinda miss how FF games had a unique theme with every installment..

Jackio81Jackio81 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 418

Final Fantasy 7 had a cyberpunk theme, 8 was more romanized, 9 was a child-like fairy tale, 10 had a pacific islander setting...but once 11 came around FF games seem to have lost their sense of a unique direction.

Just wandering what type of theme 14 is suppose to have now....

Oh and don't get me wrong this isn't a "/sigh" thread, I'm really looking forward to FF 13 and the same for 14, I just kinda miss the unique themes these games we're taking starting around the time 7 came out.

Ok, this thread is kinda a "/sigh" thread....lol

Maybe Hironobu Sakaguchi leaving in 2003 had a part to play in it.

Lol... I like how you think the Final Fantasy Series started with Final Fantasy 7...

I guess to answer your question, FF 14 will have the same theme as FF1, FF2, FF3, FF4, FF5, FF 11, FF12 and maybe even FF6 as well as the FF Tactics games...  you know, a general medieval feel with a touch of futuristic aspects.

Also, I disagree that FF9's "theme" was a "child-like fairytale".  It was actually supposed to be an homage to the original FF games that I just mentioned.  So you can add that to my list as well.

    From Wikipedia:

"Final Fantasy IX was developed alongside Final Fantasy VIII, but took a different path to return to the series' roots with a more traditional fantasy setting. Consequently, Final Fantasy IX was influenced heavily by the original Final Fantasy game, and features allusions to other titles in the series."

Now I will agree with you that FF 7, 8 and 9 felt different but I would hardly consider those three games to define the series.

I have to agree with that.. the team making FF series has changed a bit by bit, so that might explain the lack of creativity after FFXI. They are just copying the same shit nowdays :/

Hurray for the remake of FFXI with far better graphics!

Ya, that about sums it up.

If they had chosen a more, modern theme like the one in xiii I would be more excited for the game... Right now it's just copy paste fail....

    Make it so...

Ok think about what you just said. 7,8,9,10,11 were all accounted for you.  I personally never played 12, did it have a unique theme? Well that was the last one released. So lets wait and see what 13 and 14 hold.

IMO the FF MMO's shouldn't be compared to the single player FF games. I personally do not like the heavy sci fi settings that the single player games have turned to. The medevil settings is what got me started on FF, that was way back on the NES and SNES.

this theme goes back to final fantasy roots, the middle ages fantasy with some tech.  nine wasnt realy unique it was a lot like final fantasy 1-5.  Its funny how people think final fantasy started with 7.

I agree. FF MMOs are more like fail copy paste MMORPGs with chocobos/moogles in them. Not my cup of tea.

Makes the whole series look bad :/

12 was definetly had a starwars theme.... Rebels fighting an empire and the protagonists being aided by a smugglar *cough* skypirate. I wouldn't call 13's theme star wars at all, maybe the setting but not the theme.

FF7 wasn't about cyber punk crap ... It was about a grass roots terrorist group rising up to fight against a monolithic empire and ending up having to save said empire from the monster they create. In fact it is the same idea as FF6 except the 7 has a economic empire while 6 has more the traditional governmental idea of an empire. . ... the only thing more annoying than people who obsess over FF7 is people who obsess over FF7 and hold ignorance to what the game is actually about. How many years did I have to put up with the question: "Zach who?" ... so annoying.

and just pointing out ... FF9 is basically the plot of early Dragonball Z ... FF12 is the plot of Star Wars ... FF11 is mirror against everquest ...

What makes you think I think that....obviously if the title has a VII at the end it's not the first in the series according to common sense...0o

All I was saying is I kinda miss the unique themes the FF games had starting from FF:VII that's all....=)

    the premise was cyberpunk/steampunk

I'm not sure why people always gush over FFVII. Yes it was a great game and had a lot of memorable moments and characters. However in terms of sheer epicness, FFVI will always be the pinnacle of the series, imo. FFVIII was really a let down for me. FFIX was great in the way it was a throwback to the earlier games of the series. FFX was pretty decent. FFXIII, I dunno, it looks neat, but there's something about it that I don't like. FFXII was a fun game, but it played like a single player mmorpg. I really wish XII would've had online co-op options or something.

I don't like how they are reusing the Races from XI to XIV. It's really a departure from the usual FF formula. Each FF game is related, but not really tied to one another. I guess Square-Enix wants to create familiarity for their current and ex subscribers, which in a sense is smart, but could generate criticisms too. My only true criticism of the FF series as of late is that it feels more like I'm playing an interactive movie than a game, which really breaks immersion for me. I would like to see SE get back to basics and follow the formula that made the series great to begin with.

Ya I agree I wish they would have come up with different races as well. I will really be dissapointed if no new races are introduced. With that said 90% of the time I always play human race, but I like seeing a diversity of races. EQ2 had the best selection of MMO's that I have played.

I have lost all intrest in the single player FF titles. I use to be a huge fan, but they have moved away from what made me a huge fan to begin with.(the early medevil settings). Sci-fi settings just ruin it for me. SE has Star ocean for sci-fi crap none of which I played after the first one. I am thrilled that ffxiv is not a sci-fi setting.

They went for a more traditional route with their online games, but most people wouldn't really consider them as an installment in the original series. If you leave out XI and XVI that means from X they went to XII, XII was more like the original games, a somewhat typical JRPG. The next installment will be the XIII's and those look crazy unique compared. So really, the only game that doesn't have a "unique theme" would be XII, XI and XVI are MMO's and follow that medieval fantasy formula because it's what sells. Even if we do consider them a part of the main installments then that's only three games that don't follow the "unique theme" that you want, with the next major one coming out back on that track, so I don't really see what you're complaining about.

I like what I see in XIV so far.  As Tanaka put it, "High Fantasy".  He said to think of the setting as todays reality mixed with the classical/romance age.

And remember, Eorzea, the area where the release will be starting at, is only a continent.  I'm fairly certain they've stated that Eorzea is "small" compared to the main land they have planned for XIV down the road.  And it's just a little smaller then Vana'diel when XI hit the market.  What does this mean?  Endless options for future themes.  Remember, this isn't a game based on a previous work of fiction or lore.  That's the key point.

I remember after playing ffxi for a year and a half that I wish they would release the same exact game but with new areas and new things to do.  Looks like I'm going to get my wish.

The first few months of ffxi was the best mmorpg experience I've ever had.  That may be because it was my first MMO, but it seems they're aware that there's people like me who were very happy with the way the game worked and just wanted an updated version.

One thing though- I haven't seen official pics of tarutarus, but based on what I found with google they may actually be CUTER.

The more I see the more I agree with this sentiment.  I find this kind of sad.  They didn't even bother changing the races' back story all that much.

When talking about outside influences I noticed they didn't list Everquest 2.  It's looking more and more like they should.

Ok, this thread is kinda a "/sigh" thread....lol

    I thought 9 was more a school settings/agriculture.

X was more a wide open love affair theme, and boy dreaming about his father.

FFXI is a MMO,they are suppose to be wide open with players as a collective, deciding the culture of the game. However kid you not FFXI had maybe the biggest storyline with a very obvious direction. It was all about the crystal wars, the players versus the Beastmen. With each expansion the branched the story off,but it still pretty much stuck to the crystal wars theme.

As for FFXIV,i think the real purpose is they wanted a quick fast game they could put together, whilst offering the FFXI faithful a better looking game, graphically speaking.Tanaka has sort of said this outright.Square got a ton of feedback always asking if they could make FFXI graphics better or update them,They said it would be far too costly,so they decided to update the engine and make another game. This way it is cost effective and keeping with the times.

Tanaka stated this game was to transition players over from FFXI,i do not think it was an effort to create a game catering to a whole new crowd, even with the hinting at more solo play. That was again to make more of the faithful happy with the new game.

Theme?? It will still go under the Crystal wars theme, but i do not think there will be any noticeable story/theme.I think this game is more driven by and towards the Guild structure.
