So what do I want in an MMORPG

First of all I know this is not going to happen, but dreaming is free.

What I want in an MMORPG is this:

I want to appear in an misterious world. I want to walk and see a few houses.. a town, listen to the folks about stories, strange things that happen at night. I want to feel the need to buy a weapon and a shield and adventure.

I don't want to listen to stats, levels, classes, raids, instances, grinding, bots, end content... Screw all that! I just want to walk and listen to the sounds in the forest. Be afraid of what might happen. Maybe do some little quest, get involved slowly in the big story going on in that world, whatever it is. Get slowly better at what I do. Make friends, discover the world along with these other adventurers and just frigging relax and enjoy the game.

Yes, I know, cool not so cool story bro

Greetings, Altairzq, I've been having a problem with my turnip patch.  It seems some possums have been eating my turnips.  Go kill 20 possums and collect their lower intestines as proof then return the intestines to me for your reward.

And then do the same thing again only 50 yards to the east and this time it's raccoons in a cornfield.

    And again.

    And then again.

And....oh, sorry, did I forget to tell you?  You're in Hell.  Enjoy your stay.

Two things are missing from most MMO's today.

    1 - Fun

    2 - Immersion

Most MMO's just feel like a chore. Who, 10 years ago, thought that the MMO genre would have evolved so slowly? Or barely at all? I had such hopes for this genre, but it's moving sideways, (and sometimes straight backwards) instead of forward.

ROFL Thanks for that, It gave me a good laugh.

And thus on the winds and sheffields of the MMORPG.COM Forums, The mighty quasi essence poster who goes by the username of Neanderthal, thus summed a large piece of what¨s wrong with this genre in one swift blow.

You know, having a game ask me to retrieve lower intestines of some small furry animal doesn't sound as far fetched anymore.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if some game 2 years from now does this actually.  If for example it wasn't a quest and you could just control the population of said possums by killing off a large number of them and alleviating said turnip problem then I'd be fine with that and could rest easy knowing that at least for a little while this problem will cease to exist.  And no I'd not be digging through the carcasses looking for any organs unless I could use the various pieces of the animal to make something usable or worth while.

    Possum Scrotum pouches anyone?

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
