Is Planet Calypso any good?

synaptycsynaptyc Member Posts: 35

 Hey gang,

I've been searching for a free sandbox MMORPG for a while now. In my searching I found a game called Planet Calypso. It seems to be sandbox oriented. It was named "Project Entropia" a couple years ago but changed the name. It's F2P but you can deposit real world money to the game and convert it to game money. You can also withdraw the currency and convert it back. Interesting concept. I've read that is it really just a gambling MMO but i wanted this communities input before I mark it off my list.

I am actually looking for a game like EVE Online where i can build and upgrade a ship, craft, pvp (FPS like Jumpgate Revolution not point and click) all FREE of course =)

I was just wondering if anyone here that has played Planet Calypso could give me their thoughts on the gameplay.

Thnx!

There is no ship crafting, whether or not that will ever be implemented, I'm not sure.

In my opinion the loot system is very much like gambling. To be fair, it functions like nearly every MMO loot system that I know of. The reason I consider it gambling is that there are so many times when I played that I would get the "This creature contains no loot" or the "No resources found" messages back to back to back to back and because the game uses real money.

Eventually (I hope) they should be reimplementing the sweating activity which allows people to basically get an item from a mob that players can use to craft. If they don't then players can walk (not run) around the area to find fruit, stones, and dung, which are also used to craft. You can sell those items to players for money and use that to play.

If you are interested in this type of game you should take a look at Afterworld. Right now it's in alpha testing, but you can download it after registering on their site. It functions in the same way as Planet Calypso for the most part, except since it's in alpha depositing real money is considered a donation and it's impossible to withdraw.

You really need to invest RL money into the game to get anywhere, But there are ways around it. I put in 10 bucks a few months back and made 40 bucks in RL money from the 10 i invested into the game. It gets kinda tedious after the first few weeks of playing it, But i have heard stories of people paying off there whole college fund with this game!

really? Most vets told me if you could break even on what you invested and made you were doing awesome and even that took some hardcore playing.

I played that game when it was called Entropia Universe or whatever when it first came out. You can't really play this game except extremely casually without RL money. Guns cost money, ammo costs money, armor costs money and you can't really afford to even gear up properly with what little you gain from hunting. I spent around 75% of my time sweating mobs and mining junk just to buy ammo to play the other 25% much less do anything else. I guess if you played all day every day and spent most of your time hard at it the game might eventually become fun but it took forever to do anything. I saw some pretty insane things being sold for 100's of dollars RL money but whenever I looked into it it seemed like the input was always greater than the return and back then you could only take money out in huge chunks.

This is pretty much it. Eventually you will play yourself broke if all you do is hunt and mine. Since I was just looking for a free to play game a few years back when I played heavily I didn't really mind the sweating. The core gameplay is also really limited. If you have a gun, you can shoot it. If you have a melee weapon you swing it. No special skills or anything. Fairly realistic yes, but not exactly fun. It's one of the reasons it feels so much like a virtual slot machine to me.

Thank you all very much for the input!

All these testimonials really helped clear up questions i had after reading the games website.

I am really looking for more of a 'sandbox' and not 'slot machine' in my next MMO.

I am currently playing out the last month of my subscription to Darkfall Online. The game is fun but I discovered I an looking for more out of a game than grinding for gear so it can be lost to a hacker or exploiter in 5 shots of his bow. There is no economy for crafters, so the only reason to mine/log/harvest/fish was for personal construction. But really... why do that when you can just go kill someone for their materials. If i could build on a plot of land, things would be different.

I wish there was a game out there that let a player build whatever, have a farm, have a personal vendor for unique player made items, but still have conflict and PvP.

Maybe i'll try Wurm Online again. Or Mabinogi.

Anyway, thank you all for the input on Planet Calypso! (i believe i'll pass)
