Hi all!
First time poster here. Just wanted some opinions, though they vary greatly, lol.
Ok, I like questing. I like storyline. I like leveling. I don't like farming (required I mean). I don't like mob grinding. I don't PvP. I LOVED CoH up until issue 4, that's when the lead designer's "vision" ruined my fire tank, lol. Do you all think I would enjoy this game? For $40 I'm on the fence. I've been let down WAY too much in this genre and am skeptical.
Thanks!
Comments
Are you a slow leveler?
Do you enjoy a beta like experience in games with lots of changes, some bugs, some content issues?
Do you tollerate abilities changing dramatically?
If you can answer yes to these questions then I think given your other comments that CO would be a great game for you.

I think we can assume that the big changes (at least the sweeping nerfs) are going to slow down now that they got the big ones out of the way. In fact the last patch had only a couple nerfs and many many buffs to powers. Given the recent developer feeback on the forums I think we will see a LOT of buffs in the near future. If major buffs to underused powers is what you are referring to as dramatic change then you may be right. Regardless, I would still recommend that you don't pick your powers based on the flavor of the week overpowered build.
But to the LogicBombZ, there is no farming, no MOB grinding, and PvP is limited to scenarios and is optional. As long as you're not going into the game with too much of your own "vision" of what it should be, then you'll probably enjoy it. It doesn't redefine the genre or anything like that, but it is a solid game and most people agree that its a whole lot of fun to play.
There are some good story lines, but they are typically contained to their own 1-hour story arc instead of staying with you throughout the whole game. The only exception would be your Nemesis which hounds you for quite a while and caries on throughout the entire late game.
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to pick it up at the store next week. I have nothing else to play ATM, lol.
You should enjoy it. It is a fun game. Combat is fast and enjoyable, especially in small groups. I am still having great fun in the game.
The game has just hit the one month mark and there are still some things to work out. There is some power balancing still going on though that seems to be tapering off. the are adding content to fill areas there are some gaps in (primarily in the level 30+ range), etc. Expect more changes.
Later this month they are adding the first additional power set and adding more content for the Blood Moon event taking place in late this month. They are adding some really cool semi-co-op PVP zombie scenarios that sound like a blast. You can read about these on the website.
Its a great and fun game, if you like superheros and costumes (costumes is a lot of the fun in the game)
I play it as a 2nd game next to Everquest 2, Don't think it can be a "full time" mmo as there is too little content yet.
Ok its my personal opinion but i find it a really boring game. Its just there's to much soloing. I am lvl 33 now and have maybe grouped 4 times for group quests. The rest is doing the same over and over again. Same mobs , same everything. Even the same zones. Though at lvl 30+ you enter monster island at which point you stay there for a long period again and again return to the former zones you already spent 30 lvls in, canada and the dessert.
But i just find it really boring coz the frames allow op powers and less good powers. If you dont care much about roleplay and do not stick to a framework you will automatically choose the best powers which in return means that after making 2 or 3 chars max you've pretty much done all frames.
Coh was a much much better game coz you grouped all the time but thats again my personal taste. Champions online feels way to much like a single player game where you see people but never play with them.
I cant even bare to lvl to 40 so im soon quitting. I just cant stand getting 10 new quests thrown at me every 5 mins where i have to do the same all over again i just did for 30 lvls. Plus its all so simple its just plain boring.
Wish I could sell you mine for a fraction of the price but alas that is not allowed here.
Man if I was you I would look up alot more reviews. If you like to group like I do then this game is diffently not for you.
The way the game is set up is just anti grp friendly, I used to think I would love a game where I could pretty much make a do it all character.... Boy was I wrong. It makes it so there is hardly no reason to group. This is proably the only MMO that I have ever played that felt more like a Single Player RPG.
Save yourself some cash and get this in a month when its like 15 bucks.. Trust me, and others.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
If you think because the game was classless that is reason why people dont group then you couldnt be more wrong. All I play is Classless MMOs and I can say you see tons of grouping in those.
Even if Champions was Class based you'd still not see much grouping. The reason is not hard to figure out. They give you no reason too.
In City of Heroes they allowed us to set max difficulty on instances and with a team you could make mad XP.
But with CO they tried something different.....
Also, even though I do not play it right now, I'd say dont let the reviews decide for you whether or not to get it. But some were fairly spot on. I'm still glad I got the game and might resub when Blood Moon patch comes out.
My main turn off is the game is due to lack of balance and broken powers. On one hand you have really great powers like Regen and Invul but then on the other you have the not so good newer powers like LR and Defiance. It makes it kinda hard to stick with a concept when you suffer so much
For example on my Regen/Electric I just mowed down mobs. IT was crazy. But on my LR+Claws+Masterful dodge+Bountiful Chi this guy had a much harder time and died a lot more.
Claws felt great 1v1 but just cant hold a candle to my electric.
Both characters I leveled at sdametime....
PVP balance was dreadful.... PVP features just lacking bad....
But you only mentioned PVE. I enjoyed it when I could get teams but yeah its huge step down from City of Heroes in this regard. The devs just lost their minds. Impossible to keep teams together in CO. Everyone has different quests and they just bounce all the time. Just horrible man. They gave teaming no thought
Game was rushed out way too early. But I loved making diff heroes. Had many good points but lack of content, balance, bad pvp, etc drove me away for a bit
Btw for a good classless MMO that has teaming look at EVE Online. I kid you not I've been in fleets of hundreds of people and we were really doing PVE (attacking/sieging enemy POS). It was pve mixed with pvp.
For all PVE my corp did mining and agent missions. For mining, no limit to how many people can come
What was that other classless- ah LinkRealms. All we did was group there and run dungeons. I miss it. Need to see whats going on with linkrealms. Had a lot more heart than many MMOs I see coming out now
yeah couldn't hurt, and you liked CoH so honestly i think you'll atleast get your money's worth from it. i liked the game , didn't play it long but it was fun the time i did play it.
