A meaningless game? Not so much...not even close.
Speaking of meaningless games....You play LOTRO right ?
And that's exactly why I don't really play MMOs anymore. The genre is over 10 years old and the developers still haven't figure out how to do away with the boring parts. In my opinion, grinding was OK in the very first MMO's like UO and EQ but nothing newer. It's just an easy way out for developers. Don't need to make any content, just drop a few mobs all over the place.
I'm almost done playing them myself, I have a few games I'm watching and waiting for. If those fail to make any difference in the genre I'll go back to SP/FPS games and probably pick up a 360. Pretty bad when you have to quit playing an entire genre because you feel like you're playing the same game you was 6 years ago. All I'm asking for is meaningful game play, I would like to see a deep story involved with leveling. I'm not asking for something completely immersive, I just want something "fun". But fun is subjective.

In all seriousness. Can I suggest, BG II, the Witcher, Mass Effect...I can go on ? From what you are saying MMOs just arent your thing. A big part of MMOs are the community. The game is the world and the devs fill that up to a certain extent and then it is up to the players to make their mark. AION offers numerous opportunites for its players to do so -- from Pve to Pvp. to questing, instanced dungeons, crafting, forming legions and friendships -- If you cant see that an MMO is just as much about you and your fellow players then anything the devs give to you then seriously dont play MMOs. -- EQ, one of the greatest MMOs of all time (IMO) offered basically one way to level -- GRIND mobs, endlessley. You formed communities, guilds, friendships and explored the world as it was given to you. The things you are seeking are what devs of single RPGs provide -- You dont seem to understand MMOs -- It s mainly about the PLAYERS.

To be fair, the only reason EQ is considered one of the greatest was because it was one of the first MMORPGs. It evokes that "first love" in a lot of people who started in it. Had EQ been released now, it would have been laughed out of the genre.
There are numerous ways to promote community interaction and mindlessly grinding mobs is, in my humble opinion, a piss poor way of doing so.

I beat the Witcher and Mass Effect, MMOs are my thing been playing them for many years. Is it wrong to want something new? Or something to make grinding more entertaining. What you listed is NOT new and is NOT all that entertaining if you have been doing it for years. I have a active sub to AION, it's not bad, but it's nothing new either, imo. I'm sorry I don't understand why MMOs shouldn't be entertaining. I guess I need to saturate the boredom with community.
Let me break it down for you, I want a game that's not boring, has some "depth" and is more then kill x mob. EQ was old, it's understandable it was not more then what it was, a grinder. But this is 2009 going on 2010. EQ came out on march 1999. Yet what exactly has improved on the grind besides meaningless quests. Please don't insist I don't understand MMOs. I'm not a mindless zombie like a lot of people. Shoot me for expecting evolution in the MMO genre.
I'm not playing Aion and haven't even tested it. But why should you have to have good determinatiion and willpower to play a game? Isn't games about enjoyment and relaxing after a hard day at work (or school)? Sure there must be challenges in the game, but why bore a lot of people when games are supposed to be fun?
They surely are!
And what I find relaxing with Aion is that I don't have to race to the top. Because most of the players are playing the same pace I'm playing and every level feels like an accomplishement.
To take this into the game world, I'm pretty glad I don't have to build new equipment set every day (because of the slow levelling).
Great, and like someone else said "fun" is different to each of us. The thing I have a hard time understanding is how some people equal grind=challenge/difficulty.

I'm in the same boat as you are. After AION, I've decided to just take a break from the genre and play SP games that I've been neglecting for a while. I'm looking forward to Cataclysm, Mortal Online, and SWTOR. I might try out any other new MMO's that comes out as well, depending on what the gameplay is like.
I'm really starting to lean more towards Oblivion style gaming now. You know, twitch based combat, open character progression, and a deep story with some side stories to go along with it. Turn-based combat is starting to all feel the same, with only minor differences from one game to the next.

I agree, Oblivion style is the way to go. Every company is all about the $ now, which in a business sense is smart. That said it s really making all the MMOs that are recent, really borefests. Some people like Aion thats a given, but damn I found it so boring and like I never started a new game at all, just re rolled an alt from 1 of the many recent releases. I m hoping FFXIV will be different as well as GW2. I have a 360, PS3, and Wii and I play them much more then any MMO now. FF Crystal Bearers for the Wii looks amazing, so until FFXIV and GW2 come out I might just be playing my consoles for now. MMOs really have become that boring and stale. I just picked up a copy of FE , and I ve read alot of good about it so we ll see.

Well that's just it, the players ever since WoW came out are mostly lowlifes and immature assholes. As a person gets older, their interests change, their perspectives change, as does their priorities in life. With the exception of a handful of people I run into in these games, they are all so different than I, I just can't stand to be around them. I'm a respectful, open-minded, and mature person in a game world where that's a rarity. I really don't want to hear a persons racial comments, sexist comments, disrespect towards others, about them getting high or drunk, or about how big their epeen is. The handful of people who aren't like that have different playstyles than I. I play A LOT, whereas most people my maturity level are very casual in nature.
EQ and DAoC were both grindy games, but I was okay with that back then. You grouped up the majority of the time, and people were just cool to be around. The grind was still boring, but you never thought about it, because you were having a lot of fun socializing. Games aren't like that, nor are the communities anymore. People expect quest-based solo content and only group when they have to. With the exception of a handful of people, these people don't chat while in group, and they disband as soon as they get what they want. Most of those that are team players, require vent, and are the competitive types that spout immature competitive crap over vent or in chat. You know, teabagging the enemy and etc.

You hit the nail on the head. Socializing while grinding dungeons back in the day of DAOC made the game fun. There was grind but it didn t feel like it because it was a joy to be around most other people you grouped with. I met many many nice people in DAOC grouping up that are still my friends to this day. Now it doesn t work that way alot of the time. Grouping for a necessary quest etc, is like form group, do dungeon run, and maybe get 1 thanks for group, as everyone disbands. It just isn t the same anymore.

Most of us gamers who grew up with the FInal Fantasy series have a fondness for that series. I'm willing to do turn-based combat and a number of other things for Final Fantasy, whereas I wouldn't with another game. It has a lot to do with the setting and gameworld as well.
Guild Wars is a different game too. Yes, you still have to gather quests and whatnot, but the game is more tactical due to the limited ability of skills/spells you can take with you. Hopefully GW2 is similar in nature, and doens't turn the game into a button mashing game like traditional MMO's. Although a button mashing game with the story of the first GW is still an improvement and I"d play it.
Otherwise, I'm really read for a FPV twitch based MMO.

Exactly my thoughts!

Speaking of meaningless games....You play LOTRO right ?
Yes...which is why I'm glad I don't have to grind in LOTRO.
