In the right MMO it looks fine. It has gone too far in LOTRo for example, all the top level players look like princes of Middle earth. But in the right setting I think fancy armour is fine.
There is an escalation problem though, as each new set has to be fancier than the last, which can lead to it looking rather absurd.
I love fantasy gear and I have no problem with huge weapons and unbelievable things. Fantasy has multiple definitions beyond being a genre and one of them is close to 'something imagined that is either impossible, improbable or unrealistic but ideal'. In a world of swords, if possible to wield easily, why not use a huge sword for its advantages? My opinions of course, as always, and no I'm not going to Wikipedia 'Fantasy' for you, take what I say with a grain of salt or leave it.
EDIT: So long as it looks good go with it.
Objectivity is delivered with a lack of personality made for the mainstream but never used for the mainstream.
i prefer game to have visual style that goes with gameplay. realistic armor in arcades doesn't make sense. fancy armor in simulation is other side. weapon size depends on perspective. in 3rd person, characters usually take small part of screen. as realisitc weapons are usually thin, making weapons a bit oversized gives them more visibility. in 1st person, weapons are usually in your face, and can even be smaller than real.
it just depends on style and taste. there is room for lots in games.

I hate it and usually stay away from games that have it.
