Best types of PvP/RvR

In my opinion the best type of PvP ever done was DAoC's RvR. 3 way PvP was the best way. There is no such thing as one group being too powerful, because there will always be two other groups they have to fight. Get too powerful, and you get attacked on two fronts, creating an endless siege of lands and wonderful massive battles. I believe more games should institute this feature, but sadly DAoC, even as one of the oldest MMOs, around has achieved it and almost perfected it.

eq21 is kind of that way too you get - vs + vs =

= neutral that make insane pvp and add the arsh penalty for dying ,it give a very good scare and very good motivation to try harder

if not lazy ,or coming out of free realm

I would have to say DAoC style, faction-based RvR, but with more factions. Like the way Horizons was supposed to be.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Best types of PVP are the ones where player decisions (skill) during combat matter, because that's the true essence of a good PVP game.

This typically means limiting the non-skill factors to winning fights, which is something MMORPGs have a hard time doing since there are so many ways characters can progress (winning by being further progressed than someone is a non-skill way to win a fight.)

For the same reason, games with lateral progression offer superior PVP.  Progression offers versatility, but doesn't outright make you stronger.

However the biggest problem is solved by instancing PVP.  Either the 10-40 player instanced Battlegrounds of WOW, or the 200-per-side player instances of Planetside.

Capturing bases is awesome, but I strongly prefer Planetside's constant bloody warfare to games like WAR where 6 minutes are wasted knocking down a stationary wall.  Aion appeared to have an even longer waste of time to knock down the gate.  I also prefer constant bloody warfare to having each death set you back 1+ hours of gameplay (thereby discouraging anything more than minor conflicts.)

Instanced PvP is a fairly nice thing, but the problem with it in WoW is you have players abusing certain things such as enchanting and stacking character to make themselves far more powerful than any others. This happened in DAoC too, where a player with a very high level crafter was able to create armor for their Thid character and kill everyone else around at low levels. I do agree on skill based PvP being the best type, in mostt games it gets very mindless when it's all geared based. I have yet to try Aion PvP very much, as I am only level 30, but I am fairly excited to get to that point. It seems they are trying the 3 way PvP siege fights, but with an NPC race attacking as the third. Should be interesting :)

The best pvp for me would be Ultima Online, Guild Wars, EVE, Planetside.

The best RvR would definitely go to DAOC.  I had lots of fun roaming in small groups, smashing into other small groups.  I'm not one for big zerg fests, even though DAOC had them sometimes they were easy to avoid and most of the time it was kind of frowned upon.

Honorable mention would have to go to Warhammer simply because of leveling through PvP was a viable choice and a damn fun one for me at that, I actually liked that it was instanced, that kind of stuff doesn't bother me.

Best PvP I'd say AC1 Darktide.  It was FFA PvP, fps style, where players made the rules, not the game.  Back in the golden days people called themselves either anti or pk, then later on the neutral/honor pk's.  But players decided how to play the game, and we had great fun back then.

Best RvR I'd definitely still give it to DAOC.  Not much need to be said about it, most everybody who likes PvP have tried it and know how good it was.  3 realms, relic exchanges that affect the world, keeps that your guilds could claim, lots of cool useful realm abilities to get, etc..  It was just good fun.

My favorite system was Lineage 2.  Free for all PvP with some consentual mechanics.  That was before they reduced player drops and tweaked the red system.  Not too crazy about it now but when it first came out I really enjoyed it.

I also liked the castle sieges and tax system.  Glad to see aion expand on this

Just as long as you keep it clear that instancing isn't responsible for the enchanting-related balance issues, we're in agreement ;)

Yeah, just the issue is allowing high level enchantments to be placed on very low level items. Kind of makes things very unbalanced :p But otherwise we're in agreement :)

Pre-BC WoW open world PvP was a blast.  2 sides just attacking eachothers capitals, fighting in hillsbrad for hours on end, it wasn't really a "type of PvP" so to speak, but i loved it aswell as a lot of people that i played with.  I thought Warhammer was going to kill DAoC, the best PvP game to date, but that game just got boring and repeated itself.  There is no best PvP/ RvR out there in my opinion,  I'm still waiting for that perfect blend between PvE and PvP, that the casual gamer can own in, i'm not sure if i'll ever see that day, but i'm hopeful

It may not technically be the best pvp of any mmo out there, but the pvp I had most fun in even with all its flaws and extreme overuse of crowdcontrol was lotro.'The reason for this is simple: mentality.

The thing that ruins the fun for me in most mmo's is the general mentality in pvp, it's all about pwning, lolling, badmouthed bullies etc. Players like that make me want to quit playing simply because I don't fit in with that type of crowd. Lotro's pvp ain't the best by a longshot, but the mentality is what made it the most enjoyable for me.

It's the reason I am already bored with Aion, not because it's a bad game, but because the community is as bad as you'd expect from a modern pvp game. What is it about pvp and it's attraction of total idiots?  (not talking about ganking btw, but about the way they act in chat)

So the best type of pvp/rvr for me is one with a more friendly mature crowd, one that wants to work together instead of a mass of chilidish individuals trying to "pwn" others. Sadly I think I won't find that type of pvp in any game anymore.

Good PvP for me is in how well the game plays, how fun and balanced the actual fight is.  How in control of your character you are and how much your actions have an impact means fun.  For me, WOW did it best by a long shot.  Sure the reasons to fight were simplistic and didn't matter all that much, BUT it was fun to play.  If I lost it was my fault for the most part.  If I won it was my fault.

The reasons why you fight and consequences are secondary and make no difference if I can't get by the mechanics of the actual battle system.  Thats why UO, DAOC, & Eve, which had some very good reasons WHY you should be fighting held no interest to me because the way you went about fighting was so horribly, horribly tedious and flawed.  UO had point and click control and a lousy UI...horrible.  DAOC had nasty imbalances and shallow class design (when I played) which made the fights boring.  Battles in Eve are so strategic, you're barely playing the game.  You're watching the game.  Enemies are blips on a map moving in slow motion, rather than tangible space ships dogfighting....soooooooooo sloooooooow & boring.

Fun overrides purpose for me. A game that played like WOW but had overarching motivation like Eve would be an ideal scenario...without the horrible death penalties or travel of course;)
