I must say, the combat in PvP and PvE is awesome. The spell effects - awesome. Graphics - awesome. It just doesn't feel right for me. I guess you could say this is Diablo2 with new graphics and some other changes. You get in your group of six or so, and then load into the 'mission' which is a map where only your group is in. I'm really looking to play a MMORPG, and this is not an MMORPG. If any of you remember me supporting that it was, I change my mind now after playing it.
It is really cool, though, and you should give it a try.
I think the game is awesome. It fills its role very very well, but its not a mmorpg really.
The design that revolves around instace missions is instead a new version of Diablo 2, except now instead of a chat room while waiting for missions or instances, you now have a graphical world to wait in.
I like mmorpgs and I like Diablo 2/Phantasy Star online kinds of games, but they are not the same genre.
For example, you could never compare WoW/EQ2 to Guild Wars.
If people like those games, I say give it a try absolutely. I just demand a more in depth games so while I will play this from time to time, most of my time will be with WoW or D&L or whatever.

It doesn't feel very MMORPG'ish (even though it is). And I think its mainly for one reason. Instanced area's. And thats why I've been vehemently against instaced area's ever since newer MMORPG's have started to incorporate them.

Absolutely. Wish to god some of the ultra softcore people would wake up. A MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER game is not supposed to seperate you from other players.
Not that I dont like these games, I just hold them in a different genre and for when im in a different mood.

Instancing is the way a large number of games manage gameplay. This is really no different. Even in any traditional MMOG, you typically are only dealing with a small party of people at any given time. You may see dozens in a city, or a handfull traveling by in the wildnerness and dungeons, but you are typically only fighting with a small group/party. In my first try of the game last night I saw at least 50 other players...that's no more or less populated than any average city in most MMOGs I've played.
For my dollar, this fits the bill of a MMOG. Thousands of people will be on at the same time, and you can potentially interact with all of them, though I'm not sure how GW will manage servers/shards.

Actually there is a difference...a titanic difference. When you in a instance you in your own world completely. That is NOT the same thing as grouping with some buddies to go hunting and running into other players in a dungeon, etc. Some of the best people ive met accidentally. Those encounters would not have happened in a ainstanced adventure.
If you want that experience thats what GW and D2 present (think they are good games) but it is not a mmorpg.

Thats the only thing I see wrong with it. If a game has both Instanced and Open areas then thats kewl, but if its entirely instanced then its defeating the purpose IMO.
ALl MMORPGs are technically instanced. When you go into a town and the loading screen appears, dong, instanced area. Sure Guild Wars put there instancing in the fighting portion, but hey.
Graphics: 9 Really nice. Lighting, color, the whole works.
Character Appearance: 5 I was disappointed here, only a handful of facials and handful of hairs. I give it a five because its no worse then Lineage II/FFXI, but doesn't really compare to the SWG. Though its still three months away (at the latest) and can likely change.
Sound: 8 I liked it.
Gameplay: 8 (not entirely my cup of tea, but I liked it regardless). The only worry is that the WPE doesn't let us play as a level 1, so it might be decepetively hiding a not-so-fun build up to the more fun 15-20 level range. Though Im not entirely worried, because the set up the game gives it a different feel and something that doesn't seem really suited to a grind, (i.e. no vast fields of monsters waiting to be slewn) but rather suited to compeititive gameplay, which is a plus.
ok for you poeple saying that they split you up and stuff...there are actual maps hwere you cna hunt with EVERYONE else....its just not in this release
Being an alpha tester, I feel that Guild War's failing point is its PvE content and the way players are forced to build their character.
Given the well known facts concerning the newest skill collection implementation in the Signet of Capture system, there is no guarantee you will ever collect all of the skills you want as a character, let alone collect them in a timely manner in order to create a workable build in PvP (the main point of the whole shibang). Being forced to play through the PvE content with a subpar selection of skills creates an overwhelming sense of impotence for me. The fact that it is difficult to down a single monster on my own in a timely fashion, and the perception that, if I wasn't there, the fight would be occurring in the same way.
Don't get me wrong, the game is fantastic when you can turn on a literal "god switch" and instantly have access to all of the needed tools for fun PvP, I simply find the mediocre mountain climb to reach that point through normal means far too grueling. Yes, I'd also like to express my distaste with the PvE missions as a whole; very mediocre.
I don't feel it breaks the NDA to say any of that since I can base the same contents in the WPE content alone.
But, at least the game is free after the first fifty right?
if you want to see what its like i encourage youa ll to try it lol on my office computer, it took little under 10 min to download patch make my char and play
10min!!! The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is great.. and unlike the person before me, I quite like the missions.. the PvE is very fun, but I must admit the PvP is the main feature that sell it for me.. its just soo dammn fun!
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
The game is alright.. but I don't like the idea of only having one or two paths to go, the interface sucks, only one race and not enough customizations for your character, ~6 classes(granted it's still months until release, so I'm not sure what they have planned).
I don't like the small instances either. I don't mind instances where there are 50+ people in the zone(CoH-type), but having 6 or 8 is no fun.
It will have no monthly fee though, so if *Guild Wars* lives up to its name, and has great *guild* wars, then I'd have to reconsider. :P
It does have great PvP, though. It would be neat if you could get some sort of XP from PvP, though.

Can someone please explain how the PVP aspect works in this game.
When you are on your quest you are only on it with a select group of people and no-one else can interfere with the quest correct? So obviously PVP is not possible during quests right?

i agree that graphics are amazing in this game and i really like the combat system....
but i love huge areas which i can explore what i cant do in that game.....its more a pocket mmorpg in mmo to have some quick fun but cant compare with regualar mmorpgs out there.
those amazing graphics are only possible cause of the small size of this game....except levelling and 4vs4 duells is nothing to do in the game. would be fun for a short time but not a longtimer for me.

1. Anti-social"
Anti-social and MMORPG dont belong in the same sentence. A person does not pay money every month for a game revolving around interacting with other players just so they can avoid them. Course, this is again why GW is not a mmorpg, but still a good game.

They instanced the crap out of this game. It doesn't even feel like an MMO anymore. It just feels like diablo 2 with more people.

But for someone that can manage to afford a real MMORPG, I might pass on Guild Wars.
Yes, this game is similar to Diablo 2, which was a great game BTW, but the reason I've become addicted to MMORPGs is because they have large worlds with limitless boundries.
Guild Wars is like Diablo 2.
While MMORPGs are like Morrowind.
I liked Diablo 2 for the simple fast action. And I liked Morrowind for the freedom and ability to do whatever I want when I want.
And right now I'm in a phase where I've played too much "Diablo" style games and fell in love with MMORPGs.
I was too hyped up for nothing, it was too good to be true for a "real MMORPG without no monthly fee". Having a vast limitless world like most MMORPGs would be too heavy on bandwidth for any company to handle unless they charge a monthly fee. That's why Guild Wars is not a MMORPG...

this game will give me something to do for the next 3 days but this will be the first and last time i ever play it.
wtf is up with only being able to be human? i dont get it. AC1 pissed me off the same way. give me more choices than 6 classes and 1 race please.

The graphics are purdy, gameplay is fast paced, PvP is kinda fun, but it I got bored of GW's very fast, the PvE just gets so incredibly boring after a few missions. But don't listen to me, download it and try it out, it was good enough to entertain me for a few hours at least.

However, I do agree.

Agree it doesn't feel like a MMORPG, even though it technically is.
Feels more like multiplayer Dungeon Seige.
But, recruitable NPC for groups is very nice: never a need to wait for a healer/tank/nuker. Some nice touches.
Lag got pretty bad last night: but for a WPE: very, very nicely done.
