While watching FAQ About Time Travel..

I got to thinking how cool would it be to have a MMO that has to do with time travel. It would be really cool if you could go back to any time or forward to any time but that would just get way to complicated and you'd have to make a billion copies of the world with things all changed. But if there was a story to it and there were only a handful of different time periods you could end up in and you could only time travel via time leaks just like the movie, then maybe it might be possible.

What do you all  think?

Edit:  Read my 2nd post as well.

It could be instanced time travel, E.G going back to major battles in history to change the future.

That's more or less CoT in WoW.

For OP I think a system where you could go anywhere in the time line would be probably impossible to make, however a system like in Chrono Trigger could be great !

I find time travel to be a bit passé to be honest.

    Now parallel universes/dimensions .. that's a setting with scope.

As long as there's a zombie dimension. Gotta love zombies.

I think becouse the scope of time travel itself is so vast, any Mmorpg using it as a major feature would just feel to restrictive. Especialy with todays technology......but maybe in the future, who knows? Also, imagine a game based on the Jean Claude Van Spam Timecop film.......errrghhh!!!.  But on the subject of timetravel, check this article I was reading on the B.B.C news sight just this very morning.

I think it would be cool but as you said it might be somewhat to complicated to bring this into the MMORPG, think we first need a few MMORPG's that comes close to being perfect with actualy one world.

Here are some games in development trying to use some forms of time travel, not MMORPG but Achron has multiplayer settings but need to say I do not know much about both games other then knowing they involve time-travel

Achron: Achron is the first game to feature single-player and multiplayer free-form time travel. It is the world's first meta-time strategy game, a real-time strategy game where players and units can jump to and play at different times simultaneously and independently.

You can undo your mistakes, change your strategy after committing to it, preview the future, freeze time to perfectly coordinate attacks, and send entire fleets through time to when they are needed. However, all of your opponents will also be independently moving across time, attempting to rewrite history in their favor...  read more here> http://achrongame.com/

Or perhaps Darkest of Day's which is already released but does limit itself with 5 different time periods, read more here> http://www.darkestofdays.com/index.php#/game-info/

I agree. Come to think of it, a Resident Evil set in raccoon city and the underground Umbrella lab would be awesome

Yes the idea would be awesome, but for the exact reason you mentioned,it would be too much work.I would not want another EVE online that wants you to wait 10 years before the game actually reaches it's potential.

A game like this would need at least 4 starting era, now, maybe the cowboy era, roman era and dinosaur era.I think with those 4 alone could be a very interesting game, but making 4 worlds with enough content in each would be a huge task,i am not sure even SOE would take on that effort.Perhaps Microsoft could turning it in to a sort of simulation game sort of like Age of Empires.

IDK if you guys seen the movie, if not I suggest you watch it. I thought it was pretty funny.  But maybe one day a game using  this idea could be made possible. The time where you would start off would be present time in a huge ass city NYC-esque with a some suburbs as well to explore. Then you would take other different settings like a pre historic time, Future, PA Future, medieval, Civil War.

There would be certain areas where there are time leaks throughout the game and once you find one It would be marked. I thought about it not being marked but then people would just ask in game so there is no point in making the players remember where they are at.. Different time eras will have some time leaks that are different so you just cant time travel to every time period from the existing era your in.

I would totally play a game like this for years because it would be like a bunch of games all tied into one.  It probably would take forever and a day to develop but  it would be sweet. Then the expansion pack would just be a different time era that you can travel to.

    Edit.

I just got to thinking that maybe this game would probably be way better as a offline RPG game because you know people would be asking all the time where is the time leak to such and such. So unless everyone wouldn't tell the person the whole adventure of not knowing when you would travel in time would be ruined.  So that being said do you think this would be possible as an offline RPG?    Maybe make all the areas combined about 2 times as big as Fallout 3 or Oblivion although it would be awesome to make each era as big as those games but it would take a massive development team to do that.

They have trouble with 1 world and a linear time line.
