Don't know how long before release games go gold but I believe it must be at least one week time. Right now from reading about all the problems with latest patch on SOE forums there is NO WAY that EQ2 is ready to go gold master...
As borked as things are, all the people bitching about it on the beta forums... most say they will still buy the game. Which is why companies can get away with pumping out incomplete shitte in a box. Because gamers, no matter how much bitching and moaning they do, still pay to play it.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

do you realize how LONG it would take to make a mmorpg perfect? literally years of beta testing, and unless you start a company that can afford to do this, maybe bugs should be a little more acceptable to all of us.
I honestly don't care to much about bugs cuz I know for a fact they will fix most of them within six months of gold. and I would much much rather play the game for that six months than have them do beta for another six months.
heres a little pole just to see who agrees with me...
I totally agree with Elyon. Release it now, work out the bugs later. I'm pretty excited about playing and a couple of inconveniences will not stop me from having fun.
No MMO will ever be perfect upon release. Worst case scenerio, if it's so buggy that it is practically unplayable, cancel your account before the first month and move on with your life (see SWG). But that won't happen with EQ2 I'm sure.
It doesn't matter if they went gold a month ago - you won't be playing the version on the discs either way. When you install, you will be patching to the current version. They may have gone gold already, there is really no reason to announce it when they can patch in the "release" content when you run the game for the first time. It's not like an offline game where the gold master is the version everyone will be playing.
> would you rather play a bugged EQ2 now or wait till its near perfect to play?
If you ask most long-time EQ players, they will tell you that EQ was not "perfect" until Velious was released, almost two years after the original EQ release. The original EQ had almost no high-end content (Nagafen and Vox,) the planes did not exist, there were no epic type quests until Kunark, the classes were not balanced, and their roles and abilities were not clearly defined.
Now, I'm not saying that SoE will take two years to get it right. I'm saying that EQ was originally a very different game. I predict the same for EQ2 - 2 years from now it will probably be "complete."
I agree pooka, I think SoE does have a bad reputation with releasing buggy games, and I think it will be a long time before all the big bugs are fixed and people will be able to fully enjoy the game.
But my main point is that I would rather they release a buggy game than wait for them to fix things which who knows how long that will be.
But I do agree that there will be problems at launch and I will probably get annoyed at times too, I will just have to remind myself that "at least I am playing Everquest 2"
You might want to reread my post. Maybe two or three time, if need be.
Then point to me were I said the game had to be perfect? As a matter of fact, I've made a couple posts on the subject in the last week or so stating that I don't expect perfect. However, given launches like CoH, DAoC, which were stable overall, I think something like EQ2, which doesn't suffer the money woes of many game companies, and has the resources, should be able to match CoHs launch at minimum. As a 3rd gen MMOG, they should be doing a better job than EQ, AO, etc. You know, learning lessons from past games, and applying those lessons to EQ2. But throwing in a major overhaul a week before release? That's a stupid idea if ever I saw one. Even if they do manage to address all the complaints on the forums, all these changes won't get thoroughly tested, whch means there will be nerfs left and right. Servers down constantly. In other words, the same ole, same ole. Which means people will be pissed off, and complaining, etc. All of which could be avoided, but they just have to get the game out before WoW. As if it will make a difference.
But like I said, they will release it, whether it's working or not, specifically because people like you will rush out and not only buy it, but continue to pay for it, regardless of the state it's in. Rather than hold them to any sort of standards of excellence, the community just takes whatever they're given. They promise you filet mignon, and when they give you salsbury steak, you smile, and thank them for their gift.
Me? If I'm told they'll be serving filet mignon, I damn well better get it.
Youre right, I will rush out and buy it. Although im sure testers would like it to stay in beta longer and keep playing for free, not all of us could be so fortunate. I would have paid money to participate in beta. Im very glad that they are releasing so we will all finally get to experience it.
Im thinking that they probably wont announce gold for eq2 since there will never be a finalized release candidate. Mmmos are games that are in constant development and they never really stop until they die off. Im pretty sure theyve printed the discs by now and have them in boxes.. which would technically mean gold. Theyve given a confirmed and solid release date, regardless of whether or not they used the "gold" keyword.

Oh, I'm sure there are people that are in beta that only care about playing for free, or trying before they buy it, whatever. But there is also a pretty large core of very dedicated testers out there busting their ass to make this game the best it can be. To me it's just a slap in their face to be releasing the game prematurely. And then to have people not in beta pissing on the work they do. And for some the amount of time and effort put into making sure things are working properly is equal to a second job. Like Pkay who's tested the hell out of the quests, making sure everythings working when you people try to do the heritage quests to get one of the items from EQ like Ghoulbane, or the FBSS
Just makes me feel like saying why even bother when nobody seems to give a damn what state the game is in anyway.
Don't worry, some people who aren't in beta would rather the game come out in better condition. I am one of them, I am not so impatient as to need to play the game now, or next week. And I don't need the game to be perfect. But, I would like it to be as hassle free as possible, and that doesn't seem to be a SOE concern.
Oh well, I will play the game, and if its so broken I lose interest. Well, bye. Just like I did with AO. And never looked back. I am sure I will not be the only one.
But, I am probably in the minority. So there is no real reason for SOE to change its release pattern. It works for them. And no matter how much you would like them to be a more responsible to quality control company, they just don't see a need for it when it comes to releases.
I am not saying you shouldn't have seen this coming. In fact, I think you wrote awhile back that you did. So why does this dissapoint you now? You knew what was gonna happen, bud.

Actually, now that I think about it, a buggy launch wouldnt be such a bad thing for me. I hope it does have a rough launch and it makes me hate it. That will cure my addiction before it starts. Its not like I have a ton of free time and money to dedicate to the game. Unfortunately, I think theyve got me hooked already. Maybe I should pick up a safer habit, like heroin.

I spent 600 dollars perfecting my computer for this...

Obviously you were not there for DAoC's release. That is a urban myth of gaming. I wish I had a dollar for every time I fell through the floor in Camelot, or crashed to desktop, not to mention the bugged quests and maybe a dozen monster skins overall. The beta testers there screamed it is not ready for release also by the way. It did have a smooth launch in that you could create a account and log into a server fairly smooth, which was a miracle at the time and led to the DAoC perfect launch myth. COH was a perfect launch now, but considering EQII is about ten times more complicated as far as the game goes I would say it is pretty bug free right now. Not slamming COH here, it is a great game.
The known bug thread on the beta forums lists maybe 30 bugs all in all. About 90% are cosmetic or annoyance level. Maybe 5 or so I would consider must fix before launch bugs. A few are saying they are having the occasional CTD. I have not had a CTD myself in the last 20 or so hours of play time. I was having one about every 2 hours last week at this time. Anyway I am more worried about them balancing everyone after this last patch and getting some more artisan quest in than the few bugs that are left.
Well I'm in the beta have been for couple months and it's not ready, it's currently not playable period, if stupid people want to pay good money for something that is unplayable thats their business. It's also just plain not a good game either, but hey the brain-dead fanbois wll buy anyway.

Actually I was on Hib/Guin at release. I don't recall having any problems falling through the world, though I recall a spot or two in TNN being mentioned. Content wise, yeah, DAoC was a bit on the light side.
Maybe it's just that I use AO/SB, and to a lesser extent SWG as yardsticks when I look to see whether a given games launch is smooth or no.
As of right now, the biggest problem I've been having is mobs, and currently NPCs falling through the world. Major pain in my ass. There are also any number of little things. Things that could be dealt with before release if they weren't trying to rush it out the door to beat WoW. And then there is the new traits, traditions, etc. While the low level stuff is mostly unnoticable(2 pts of agility WOO! Someone hold me back! ), I could easily see them getting out of hand at higher levels. Not to mention a MAJOR revamp of the priest classes, which while I think many are getting a bit carried away with how bad it really is, there is still a definite need to see how things pan out, expecially with as important as healers are to a group. And being that I'd be playing a Warden should I decide to play, that's kind of a big deal to me.
As for Sakers post... pfft. I might ride the game's problems pretty hard, but at least I can point to the reason I'm riding the game, and the devs so hard. It is playable, in all honesty, but it really does need another week or two of polishing up the rough edges, and more time with the new abilities. In the long run, it will save them headache to do it now, rather than later after everyones in game, and crying nerf, and so on. There doesn't need to be a Whineplay Pt II.
WHY is it not ready? I am ready and willing to listen to you.
Don't just come on here and say it's not ready without giving some details. I need to know, FFS.
Spill, man
You can't expect people to listen to you when you call them stupid without saying why it would make them stupid to pay for the game in it's current state.
Those of us not in beta have to rely on the infos you can provide, so provide it already.
If I relax my eyes, and look at my last post, I see a cartoonish pig demon thing in the lower left corner.
Wierd.
Anywho, I think I've expressed my views on what I feel is wrong in plenty of threads in the last week or two.
Short list is polish.
Some of it's little things, like getting the brokers working properly. If I try to look for just books, nothing comes up, if I want anything to be listed, I have to just look for 'any' and then hunt through everything.
There are still missing graphics in the game Did some quest in Baubleshire, Embers for Xoort(sp?) I believe. On of the quest reward choices was a dirk, which just had the gremlin graphic there. In Antonica, I had some spell cast on me by a gnoll shaman or runecaster. the icon in my bar said "unknown" so I have no clue what it was they cast on me. I was unable to finish the final turn in on a quest in Baubleshire because Marshall Surefoot had fallen through the world on beta 1.
Mobs have an annoying tendency to fall through the world, yet still attack you. sometimes you can attack back, sometimes you can't
Then there is the fact that they just revamped pretty much the entire spell line from priest up, changing everything around. Now priest types have no solo HO until lvl 12 for Druids, not sure what it is for Shaman and Cleric. There is still alot of work that needs to be done in regards to healing power, and so forth. Right now, a Shaman, or a Cleric are superior healers with Ward, or Reactive heals compared to a Druid with HoTs. The three branches were pretty well balanced before, but with the recent changes, everything got thrown out of whack. and heals over all are still a bit weak compared to mob dps.
Most of the high level content is unfinished, or not entirely tested.
I'm in beta, the game isn't ready, but it's probably ready enough. I keep seeing people say it will fail like SWG because it'll have a bad launch. SWG isn't a bad game NOW because it had a bad launch, it's a bad game because, well, it's just a bad game. EQ2 is (in my opinion) a very good game when you get down to it. It's not as polished as it could be (possibly even should be), but in 5 months I won't care how polished it was at launch.
I think too much stock is being put into the launch of games. MMO's are all about long term. When I cancelled my CoH subscription because I got tired of the ultra repetitive missions and lack of non-combat activities, I wasn't thinking about it's smooth launch.
