From the Ryzom boards:
"With the addition of Patch one and the bit torrent availibility, we are announcing a free 14 day trial open to the public starting on November 8th. This trial will go on until further notice. "
So if you have wanted to try Ryzom but didn't want to buy it, as of Nov 8th you can.
Oh one more thing... I'll save some people time in what they will respond:
Ryzom is going to get killed by EQ2 and WoW.
They are doing the free trial becuase no one is buying the game.
They are doing the free trial becuase they are hoping a free trial will pull people away from WoW and EQ2.
Things must be really bad there to already be offering a free trial.

Current player of The Saga of Ryzom. I waited 3 months for promised live events in City of Heroes, it never happened. Ryzom had one in 2 weeks.

Btw reading through Super Doopa Patch one... (pre-release IMO) i still dont see ANY mention of quests being implemented (no no not the silly missions).

Personally, I think the free trial is a good idea. I think all MMOGs should have free trials as early as possible. Let me explain why...
In many cases, you're expected to buy the box and you usually get the first month included. This is OK, but I (and apparently many others) don't want to shell out for a game we might not like. As a result of this, many people are discouraged from trying a lot of MMOGs. I for one wouldn't consider buying a MMOG unless I could try it first - every MMOG I've played has either been the result of participating in the beta (which many view as a free trial anyway) or downloading a free trial. I wouldn't mind having a go at WoW or EQ2, but they just don't interest me enough to entice me to pay for the box. Having said that, I might have a go at a trial of one or the other and absolutely love it and decide to subscribe, but as it stands now neither will get my money or time until there's a trial. I played AC2 for 6 months off the back of the free trial, and only stopped when Ryzom was released (I can only afford one MMOG at a time).
I've seen many games I think I might be interested in, but I don't have the money to buy the box on the offchance I'll like it enough to pay a subscription for it. A free trial is the ideal way for me to try a game out, and if I like it I can subscribe, if not, I can leave it and not lose anything other than some time.
Demos are something that many companies provide for single player games for this very reason. There are *very* few SP games I'd consider buying without trying it first (HL2 is one), why should MMOGs be any different?

ya there good points and bad points to free trials BUT most mmorpgs dont do them so soon after release.
It kinda gives of mixed impressions, its alright doing it 2-3 months after release but only a month.... what about all the deals on boxes?
Also they are offering it downloadable now as well.... basically cuts Ubisoft (their publisher) out of the picture as there wont be as many box sales.
Basically i see ryzom as putting on a brave face while trying everything in its powers to get more players... other than actually altering the critical problems with its product.
For example: Decent Quests?. Patch 1 has been announced and with it minor bug fixed/improvements i couldn't find anywhere any info on Real Quests for which players can use etc..... currently you still go those missions (yurk).
I could be wrong they could introduce some decent quests/storyline but who knows?
If they dont bring in decent quests with patch 1 then im sorry but they are gonna start sinking.

I appreciate what you're saying, but there were many calls for a download version as the box wasn't available worldwide. It may be nothing more than a company responding to the requests of people outside the areas covered by Ubisoft.
As for the timing of the free trial, there's no hard and fast rule on when a trial should be available. If I were making a game, I would want a trial out the door asap to encourage people to try it. It may well be that Nevrax have decided that they didn't want a trial right away because of the planned changes (which admittedly should really have been done in beta, but let's not get into that), and decided to sort of 're-release' the game after Patch 1 as a download and with a free trial.
I think Nevrax have demonstrated a certain commitment to the wishes of their customers and would be customers rather than sticking to the 'convential' timetables for downloads and trial versions. I say they should be lauded for this and hopefully it will encourage other game makers to go with free trials sooner rather than later.
With regard to quests etc, I do agree that they really need to get quests, outposts etc in the game with alacrity. This stuff really should have been in at release, and not everyone is as patient as I am.

well thats my point they could postpone quests to patch 1 but if the quests aren't in at that point then you got to wait a further month or so to get patch 2.
It kinda puts a bad air on things. Its not like they aint had some time to make some quests

Its not just for people like me in the shadows either its also for the current subscribers people will start to loose interest if they are paying for 3 months for a game that is mainly about grind and has little else to do after that point. I know its role-play and all but thers only so much you can do... eventually itll start loosing people who become bored over the game getting stale.
New quests would stop that, but as i expected Nevrax's inexperience albeit their strong determination to Customer support is hindering its progress alot.
Its one of the main points of this genre, totally leaving it out is a very bad idea.

Btw i didnt buy it because i felt ryzom needed at least 3 more months of beta testing. It needed a serious injection of developing power... in the form of decent quests and the systems it promised.

I played through the OB, and heard it didn't get any better in release.
People say Gamespot's review is unfair, but I totally agree with it. The game is so bad. It it the worst MMORPG I have ever played. All the good things that I liked about it on the noobie island were killed when I got to the mainland. Because they were the exact same, only way more annoying and time consuming. For example. The crafting. You eventually had to save up 3 levels worth of crafting skills just to buy an item recipe. I was fairly high level in crafting and I could only make 3 decent items. Everything else was way lower in level.
The only thing unique it has is 'non-class characters', which I didn't even like in the game.
It's terrible.

Crock... well this one is funny, if you read is post in various part of the forum, he even said he hated WoW and he is waiting for Guild War. GW is a fun game but in my book (and im sure lots of players will agree) its not a mmorpg, its a Diablo online. So Crock is bitching nearly every true mmorpg...

If your interested by the game, give it a try, 14 days trials is coming and the patch that came a day after patch 1 fixed lots of issus from patch 1.
