To be honost I looked at your profile, saw your age and understood why you speak the way you did. Not everyone your age will react the way you did, but I am sure plenty will as they lack the full understanding of something as old as MUD's and you wern't even born when MUD become slightly popular among us in that time somewhat "Nerd" though I do not consider myself a nerd but we who played those type of games just often where seen like that by other people who in my opinion are pretty narrowminded.

Back when you were about 5 or 6, they were pretty revolutionary and awesome.

Now, not so much. Standards are higher.

Ahh the MUD......I started playing two towers a few years before Everquest came to fruition and continued to play it in the background. The MUD was the next step in the evolutionary chain. First you had the pen and paper D&D games. Then came the MUD which took the concept a bit farther but still with minimal graphics if any (some where just text scrolling and some had little avatars that where mostly stationary). Then you had UO which took the genre yet a step further. Then you had EQ which laid the ground work for most of the MMOS out on the market today. So as you can see D&D pen and paper games started the wheel moving, and as everything in our society does, it was expanded upon and upgraded through MUDS, which as i explained caused a chain reaction that leaves us with the games we play today and call MMOS.

Ya know most of the time I HATE it when people consider me a "youngster" but,I can see that most of you guys have had alot more experiences with MUDS then I have.I guess my era of gaming looks down upon MUDS because,we've had the privilage of growing up with more revoultionary types of games.I don't know I just personally have always hated MUDS and probably always will but, that's not to say like all other types of games have, it wont further develop and become a more "respectable" genre of gaming.

You hit it on the nose, KingScar. I mean, at 26, I was on the tail end of the MUD era. Its important to remember that in its day, that was the technical limitation of PCs and online gaming. We're talking about the era of 28.8 modems and floppy disks. The first 3D games were all single-player.

You list your age as 18; the heyday of MUDS would really have been when you were 6 or so.

Its a pity that a lot of people will never know or appreciate what text based online RPGs brought to the table. They were essentially the forerunners of today's MMORPGs. I don't think UO, Asheron's Call, or EQ would have ever happened like they did without them.

Its sort of a pity that many people will never be patient enough to read and type in that way again. But I'm all for technical advancement in games. In a decade, you'll probably be describing the how we played games on monitors and keyboards to an 18-year-old.

Perhaps MUDs may one day become not just a dead end (in evolutionary terms) but once again the seed of a new revolution. The technological advancements already exist that could allow them to breed a new generation (through animated scenarios, user created content, etc.) although players used to contemporary MMOs would very likely find the transition difficult.

    Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

I am from that era ,and i never considered MUDS to be any good.Too much reading in a game only slows down your reason for being there to have fun.A game is not suppose to be a book, nor is it suppose to be a time killer ,albeit we all at times just hang out killing time because we have nothing better to do.Usually you have a "reason" for joining a game and that is to accomplish something or just hangout with friends and have some fun.I don't think there is too many people that can actually say reading is either FUN or a sense of accomplishment.

Well unless you consider my often horrible typing skills to be an accomplishment to read, then yes reading forum posts might give that.

Back in the 4.15 floppy disk era i had more fun messing around with my own programs or playing single player stuff.I would then get into the game that started all of the FPS stuff>>Wolfenstein.

The IDEA of a MUD was great, probably the reason we have MMORPG's now,but without graphics,it was just too boring.I know the same people that enjoy reading so much, usually try to knock down movies for not being as good as a book, well i am sorry, but utilizing visuals will always be better than just using your mind to fabricate whatever you want. You can argue that reading is good for the mind and educational, but that is not the purpose of gaming.

I think the obvious is more the proof, these games advanced to use graphics, because it is a better option,i wonder how many people alive today would enjoy a still movie ,or black and white or going to a movie that had nothing but words on the screen?I would say less than 1%.I would not go off and get angry at MUDS of old, they had no alternative, but to continue making them now is ridiculous IMO.

I played a lot of MUDs back in the day. Some were good. Many were not.

For those that were not it usually wasn't the game itself that was bad, more often it was the people running the game and the community they had built around them. Very often these games were run by hardcore computer nreds living out of their mother's basement (and thats probably where the server was too based on the speed of some of these games). Social skills were not their strong suit. And god forbid you suggest their game wasn't perferct by attempting to report a bug or ask for a new feature,  that was a bannable offense. I also suspect it was one of these games which invented the concept of cash shops.

Then again, this is not a problem which is unique to MUDs. I've run into similar problems in the last few years with browser based games like the notoriously awful "Zelderex Online" (the owner of that game made his wife an admin and she seemed to be on her peroid every day of the month).

The one thing I know that rings true is those who played/play MUDs and texted based games, tend to have MUCH stronger visualization skills than those who don't and/or didn't.

When things became more graphical it drew in a different group of thinkers, people who are less visual and more concrete.  Looking back, those people don't see the appeal of of those old, text based games.

I loved those games, like Zork (Deadline was my favorite) and I still love DnD and other table top games that allow me to visual things for myself. (WoW's depiction of Gnolls and Kobolds make my stomach turn.)

And for the gentleman up there who said movies are better than books; you're dead wrong. Movies are better than books for you. I still will take a book over a movie ANYDAY.

Edit: Missing word threw off a sentence.

A book universe is what it is in your head. A movie universe is what the director imagined.

The text equivalent of a movie is the short story.

Novels don't always translate well into movies because of the amount that must be cut to fit into the timeframe and cost. A novel can often give a much richer story then what can be put into a movie.

Short stories and novels still have a significant market.

It certainly is possible that a MUD could be created that has a significantly richer story then what is found in the average graphical MMO. It would also be a tiny fraction of the cost it takes to make the modern graphical MMOs.

Don't you mean to say, Getting your finger nails ripped off "by" a pair of "pliers" (Unless of course you are in fact British and are referring to "plyers" which is a woodworking tool).

God,noone knows how bad those things piss me off.

did you mean to say "noone" or "no one" (or perhaps even no-one)?

They are the most pointless kind of game out there.Who can sit down and read an online book and call it game while having fun?

That is your opinion. Your post for example, in my opinion is pointless as it has no other reasoning behind it but to put down others for their choice of what is fun and build yourself up in the process.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!I've played a few MUDS and all of them are the exact same....RETARDED.

MUDS are the same as any other sort of entertainment of like function. Movies (for the most part) all have sound, all have plots, are all already laid out for you. MMORPGS in a matter of perspective are no different. Personally, the fact that your tiny mind doesn't have the capacity to viualize what isn't right in front of you is RETARDED.

I just want to know how all you guys feel about em because,if you asked me,i'd shoot everyone whoever thought about makin a MUD!!

Are you asking only guys? Also and again, did you mean to say "'em", or "them"? Also again, and again. "i'd"? And even again, did you mean to say "makin" or making"?

As for your distaste for those that have put millions of combined hours and their hearts and minds into making something that would entertain countless others, I doubt you have ever put as much effort and heart into anything in your life. MUDDS are the predecessor to today's MMORPGs (and almost every other visual game). If it weren't for them, there wouldn't even be an MMORPG.com, it would be PnPRPG.com. Don't be such a short sighted twit.

I also forgot to mention. You're supposed to put a space between the periods at the end of the sentence and the starting letter of the first word of the following sentence.

To be honest with you, I have a hard time taking someone serious that can't even afford the time to proof read their own post, has no concept of grammar or punctuation, and refers to themselves with a little "i". Now run along and go find another forum to infect with your ignorance.

A tiny mind is a tidy mind...
