I may regret saying this but i played runescape when i was younger and ended up carrying it on for 5 years. It went pretty successful and is still growing, its just extremly time consumeing. I logged back in as a F2P player a few months ago and a lot has changed all in all in the game. Though i know RS gets alot of hate, but if someone is interested in playing an easy F2P game with an interesteing economy id say try it.
Much like Hoopty, you are confusing your personal opinion with fact.
Hoopty said there was not one big hit in F2P. I listed several that significantly dwarfed most subscription MMOs.
Hoopty said the F2P games were nearly all alike and that they were just 'regurgitations' so I listed the more popular MMOs in each category, from which one could clearly see which group was really the more diverse one.
Now, it's all fine and good if you don't care for a particular type of game. You are entitiled to your opinion. However, when you are presented with facts and concrete data on a topic, and you refute it with the equivalent of 'lol zomg those games sux' then you just reinforce my stance that the Western P2P MMO gamers are all drinking the Cult's KoolAid... heavily.
Where's GW then? Is that a F2P to you? -Or even a MMORPG? For me and I bet for many. it rivals and beats most if not all subscription based games out there. However misunderstood, and however hated "because it's not an MMO", it still had one of the smoothest launches in MMO history, has undeniable quality and one of the best story-driven campaigns in an MMO as well as one of the best non-FPS competitive PvPs out there.
I do agree that F2P games are rubbish. Mostly because in the end they want you to buy stuff. For example: It might be fun at first but the farther you go, you need to buy that item from the mall that makes the grindy game less grindy and so on...

I agree. The only reason I did not add that massively successful F2P MMO to the list is because the argument usually returned is, as you said, "it's not an MMO."
-- Whammy - a 64x64 miniRPG - RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right? - FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
I know a game which would be a biggest hit in F2P industry. Its F2P DFO clone ! can you imagine this ? First dfo style game free to play ! I definetly would play that.
I forgot to Mention Shadowbane and Anarchy Online in free to play hits
I don't think most F2P are garbage,i think they are different style NA/EU like mindless questing,Asian like mindless grinding.I think Asian devolpers are beginning to get it,Instead forcing Players to grind put in quests.I strongly believe if Runes of magic had choosen a better graphic engine it would be one of the top games on the market but also seems to issue with free to play game they always missing the one thing.Runes of Magics has the quest style of play, has the gamplay and dev support but lacks the graphic.Rohan Blood fued has the graphics, great pvp play but lacks quests and too much of grinder.
But like said earlier the Devs are begining to get it a next generation asian mmo will learn from Aion and Runes of Magic and adding more of that more western style questing in their games. The Next Gen of games look like this
Because in the end, mediocrity is still mediocrity.
The problem with one being a hit, is that all of them, in general, are almost nearly all alike. So it's pretty much just ingest and regurgitate with all the free games.
The beliefs held by the Cult of the Western P2P Players are astounding, and this is yet another amazing one.
Combat Arms
Sudden Attack
Dragonica
Wurm Online
Maple Story
MIR2
Atlantica Online
Perfect World International
NeoSteam
Dreamlords
Grenada Espada (Sword of the New World)
Tales of Pirates / PKO
Tiba
Club Penguin
Entropia Universe
That's a list of some of the more popular and profitable F2P MMOs out there. Now let's look at the major P2P MMOs
Age of Conan
Warhammer Online
World of Warcraft
Lord of the Rings Online
Everquest 2
FFXI
DAoC
Aion
COx
EVE Online
I think the quote below fits the second list a lot better than the first.
"...are almost nearly all alike. So it's pretty much just ingest and regurgitate with all the free games."
LOL your messing around now.
That F2p list is pitiful. One game on it Wurm isnt really F2p and Entroipia runs on a real world money economy so thats anything but free.
The P2p list destroys near everything on the F2p list. If thats the best F2p has to offer then we're right to bash those games.
Hell, the best two F2p games on that list PWI and Atlantica are worse than AoC and WAR. The drop in quality from p2p to F2p isnt something we made up.

I actually disagree with the OP in saying that games arent a success my problem is with you saying were wrong in bashing these games for their quality.
I'm sorry but you can't honestly think those F2p games are even on the same level as the P2p games on that list.
I couldn't care less if millions of people play those games, for me personally ill stop flaming them once a good mmo is released thats f2p.
If games like RoM, Atlantica and PWI are the best f2p has to offer can you really blame people for giving these games a hardtime?
Give me a quality F2p game that doesn't require me to spend up to a hundred freaking bucks a month to access the real game and ill shut up.
Alantica is one of the best free-to-play games out there. It's unique and keeps people going. I've been playing it for some time now, and it's hard to get me attached. (I think it's because of the final fantasy lover inside me). Runes Of Magic is doing great for itself. It's content filled. I'll admit the cash shop is a... Doozy. Thats alright though, some are worse. I can't say much about Perfect World, but it seems to be very popular and rich in it's own way. Free-to-Play games are only going to get better. Developers are getting smarter. Gradually i think free games will become bigger than they already are.
