I have never done Role Playing but I recently started playing this game on Antonia Bayle (Role Playing Server) and it has a pretty good population of RPers. If somebody is RPing it will be listed under there name so you can always tell a RPer even if its somebody just passing by.
You do realize that, even if there is rp, most MMO's aren't about RP and you will find that most of the population of any MMO does NOT RP. You'll have to prepare yourself for the fact that people are out of character most of the time. Antonia Bayle is the RP server, and I've heard its good, but whenever I go on there I've rarely ever seen people actually RPing.

The RPers tend to stick to the RP channels. That way they cut down the chance of having their experience diluted. There's usually at least one player-run RP event per day; it's just a case of finding it.
I often see low-level toons in Neriak arguing with each other, and I daren't even try and understand what's going on there

Hmmm, Neriak - whose patron is the god of Hate, city of Dark Elves, who all sneer at and backstab each other, never mind all of those other inferior races. What makes you think they were not RP'ing?
I played antonia bayle for almost 2 years now, and its heavily rp, most no rp's just dont often talk, theres housing party's, guild meetings, etc etc. Id recommend it.
Everquest has always had some of the best Roleplaying of any mmo that i have experienced so far. Especially EQ1. There are quite a few roleplayers on AB, most of the chat channels will be out of character, but person to person there are some awesome rpers out there. More so than any other mmo you would come across in my personal opinion
The RP community of EQ2 has its own site on guildportal nearly all RP guilds on AB and LdL have posts there and there is also all sorts of useful information. The RP on AB is usually very good but as always it is what it is and it can take time to find an RP guild that fits you. Look for Town Square on guildportal.com.

You do realize this is your own personal opinion and not fact and you also base this off your own personal experience. For one thing rp can be taking place in front of someone and they may not know it. Folks expect RP is a bout of 'thous' 'art' 'ye' etc. It's not. It can be a regular conversation and still be rp as long as you aren't talking about the Yankees shot at winning it all and such.
Secondly, in Everquest 2 a lot of the RP isn't right there in your face because of several factors. One...the gaming world for this one is huge. Two...it's an older and established games which means a lot of time many are out raiding, questing, crafting, etc. Not to mention a lot of them have their own circle of friends. And of course finally the fact is the introduction of the guild houses make it where many do not need to venture into the cities, hence why they are bare quite often. We have private housing and now guild housing. Little need to be up and direct in your face with the rp.
In other words if you want to find RP you have to put the effort in and look for it. I am contemplating a return to EQ2 because it does have one of the best RP communities. And despite the poster I quoted this game does try to cater to rpers hence the personal description you are able to give of your character and the ability to write your own books or what not like a journal. Also the GM's in regards to Antonia Bayle have assisted the roleplaying community in running their events on a number of occassions. In fact one approaches next month, the Festival of Discord.
http://www.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=209853&TabID=1770901 go to this site for the Town Square site for the roleplayers. You will find a listing of events, guilds, and of course forums. There is also the Raven Mythic site as well that caters to roleplayers in EQ2 also. Good luck OP in your search. I may be joining you in trying this out again.
I think its like any other game. I RP my characters depending on what guild I am in and who I am playing with. I just went back to EQ2 two weeks ago while I was trying out Aion and enjoy playing Iksars with big tails if you catch my drift(or do you?) I actually ended up re-rolling my level 45 coercer into one because I could not effectively RP a Troll to my liking.
It all depends on the group and friends you make. If you are looking for Roleplaying, you will find it. If you don't care to look for it, it'll elude you.
I am not playing right now (returning in DEC). But I had RPed my characters on Permafrost, quite a bit. But because it is not a specified RP server, I would always announce it beforehand in groups. Often others would get into it too after seeing me do it.
I'm curious if anyone knows how good the RP is on this game? I am looking at it, but I require a stable RP community to really play a game.
Thanks!
EQ2 has the best game possible to RP in,but saying that you may not find the group of people you want. When i played years ago,i found most if not all the purple/RP players were alone solo.I not once in 2 years of play ever saw at least 2 RP players together.I think it's not really a surprise since not many people actually RP.However like i said you are not going to get a better game than EQ2 for it,it has the mechanics 99% of the games out there do not even have the ability to RP in them.

Oh don't give me that crap. You don't know me so don't assume that you know whether I'd notice rp or not. I love to rp, and I have played Vampire: The Masquerade, Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire: Dark Ages, GURPS, Exalted, and Star Wars: Saga Edition (of which I'm currently GMing) on pen and paper. I also constantly play RP games on the computer and on consoles (currently playing Mass Effect and Oblivion, and waiting eagerly for Dragon Age).
I've been playing Role Playing games for over 15 years. I know exactly what to look for.
But MMO's are a different creature, and I rare if ever see anybody role playing. Its not opinion, its fact. I admit that its probably happening somewhere and I'm just not where its happening, but I'm not stupid, and I do watch whats going on around me.

Didn't know being rude consisted of disagreeing with you. And honestly can care less how much you rp in your various avenues. But saying its rare to see RP, that is personal opinion as others have stated they have seen plenty as have I. So how does your opinion or what you see outweigh the word of another? Are you an authority figure that none of us have heard of and we should disregard what we experience and see because you haven't seen it? It's simple as your third paragraph:
"I admit that its probably happening somewhere and I'm just not where its happening"
That was exactly my point. You are trying to state something as fact when it is not the case. It is your own personal experiences. As I posted there is site completely devoted for RP on this game on the specified server that has been going strong for years. Players run (with some GM assistance too) events as well. This is nothing new for EQ2. They are a very tight knit community. So if you want facts...as you state...those are facts. They aren't opinion but clear black and white as posted.
Oh and of course I don't know you so I would have to voice myself in a general manner, would I not? And that wasn't solely about you neither. It was in general.
