8 Cell Battery

xKrNMBoYxxKrNMBoYx Member Posts: 165

Okay so I am about to preorder a laptop from Amazon.com

Both specs are exactly the same except one thing.

One Laptop has a 8 cell 4400mAh battery.  The other has a 8 cell 5600mAh battery.

Amazon.com/ Asus states that the 5600mAh gives the notebook aroiund 16hour battery time on their energy save mode.

they state that the 4400mAh battery gives them 12.5 hours with the energy save mode.

Can the difference between the batteries actually have a 3.5 hour difference?

I was just wondering.  the 5600mAh is $100 more.  So I need to know before I purchase between them.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is are you ever gonna use the laptop for 12.5 hours straight unplugged in power saver mode let alone 16.

Yes, the 5600mAh has about 27% more juice than the 4400mAh, and should last 27% longer, 16 hours is 27% of an increase over 12.5 hours so everything they stated is true. It should be noted that this 12.5 hour statistic is in their 'energy save' mode which means you can't be using it.. so uhm, not that useful to know. You can usually expect around 2 hours of battery life on normal usage, and 27% more than that if you upgrade the battery (2.5 hours).

If you're actually playing a game though, the battery gets drained much quicker - if that 4400mAh battery even lasts 1 hour gaming (most won't even last half an hour) then the 5600mAh will last an extra 15 minutes. More likely you'd only get 30 minutes off the 4400mAh and 40 minutes off the 5600mAh.

To me it's not really worth the extra $100, because in high power mode it's not enough to matter, and in low power mode you already have plenty of battery life.

No, that is not the question. I am not looking into a laptop for gaming. It is for college next year. I will use it for note taking, papers, etc while away from the dorm where my desktop will be.

So it would be nice if you would answer my answer straight and normally without turning it back on me..now on to the next book.

To the 2nd guy I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just curious about it.  As this is a gaming forum, everyone expects the usage of the computer to be for games, while near college all I am focused is on getting into it without having to use much money.  Gaming is last of my priority.

So I see, just because its in energy save mode doesn't mean that you can't use it. As I said above, this wont be for playing any sorts of games at all. So they word "normal usage" will not be the word defining my use of it. Word processing, internet, should be the majority of what I will be using for it. So depending on how many hours of class I have will determine if I need that much.

I also plan on being on a plane atleast once a year for a while. The long battery life would be nice going from a country to another.

At the end, your right I dont think I'll need the extra 3.5 hours, but I'll have to see. As my father does not want me rushing to buy anything yet. He's always saying wait, and you'll get a better one. So I'm guessing $779 isnt that much for what he is willing to pay for my laptop. I plan on putting money in also, that I can buy a laptop around $800 + around $1000ish unless I decide to use all of what I have.

Thanks for the explanation. I might wait for the tests to come out. The reviews of the notebooks should be out in a month or so.

Does word processing take much cpu usage?, or memory? Not sure cause I've used a desktop almost all my life, except some of the little times away from home.

i'd go for the best battery you can get tbh, my battery only lasts 1 and a half hours unplugged when i'm just doing websurfing and word processing and you'll probs want more than that, although from what i can see 2 hours is about average

what models of laptop are you looking at?

The one I am looking at are from the Asus' UL30A series.

The two specific ones are the UL30A-A2 and the UL30A-X5.  Asus figures out their battery life by using one of those programs they check for fps.

As far as I know the A2 is 16 hours on energy save, and 12.5 on the x5

They also have another laptop coming out.  I believe its the UL50VT-A1 that comes with a Nvidia G201M Video and the 4500MHD or XHD.  You can swith it from the nvidia to the intel integrated one if you want to save energy.  The hours on that with energy save mode is about 11.5

All of the cpu's are a ulv dual/duel core.  Not much for gaming.  The only place I can see where to preorder yet is amazon

I didn't realise it was a notebook, I still think the numbers are a little too high but you're looking at a long battery life none the less

i wouldn't bother paying the extra tbh, as i can see the battery lasting 6 hours at the least on the cheaper model
