We base this off unique IPs to hit a games "section" on the site. This could be faked I suppose if someone setup a bot behind a proxy server to hit our site with hits from a pile of fake IP addresses. I will bring this up amongst the team - perhaps we could come up with a more effective way to determine which games are popular at the moment (like only counting logged in users,etc). All this being said, this could very well be legit as well, for example, if we have a Darkfall article that is linked up heavily across the web then every hit to that article would boost the popularity for the game, regardless of forum postings, etc.
If game admins were as active in their forums as you admins are in mmorpg forums, I might play their games longer.
