As others have stated, I would play depending on the type of game. I prefer a game that lets me play 1 character and continually advance that character. Having to reroll alts in order to enjoy the game is not fun IMO.
I'm with you, mate. I prefer having only one character.
Wow, not too many people interested on no alt MMo's. I think it is however really cool how the majority likes the thought of having games that do not allow alts! Awesome!
Final Fantasy Online does this, but you have the option of paying another dollar or 2 a month for an extra character slot.
I think the concept is a great idea if there are no real defined classes, or you can switch between the classes.
To only have one character in a game say like Warhammer Online, or Everquest. I don't know how it would work, but Darkfall and Final Fantasy it works great.
I personally like/prefer it so your reputation sticks with you. Ninja loot? You can't reroll/hide on alts, your stuck with your main unless you delete/reroll.
It works for some games, and some I don't think it would work well for.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
hell yeah i would, that why if u act like a jerk you get known for it. if u act like a cool guy and help people know u for that as well. but like FF online maybe paying for extra slot is another option if people wanna try something out with out having to erase there main. but personal just one slot is all u get would work great but thats just me.
Yes! I hate getting messages from people saying 'oh its me on my alt' or 'I'm logging onto my alt crafter'
With 1 char, people will HAVE to trade with each other, we shouldn't all be able to do everything using alts, a real community is based on inter-co-operation between people, and alts KILL that concept.
Alts also kill the concept of specialist skills, the kind of skill that is needed now and again but cannot be replicated by another class. In a 1 char world people who choose to take the path less travelled and who commit to the less used skills will have purpose again, and be valued rather than players using alts for the niche skill sets.
There is no good reason to use an alt that doesn't harm the game as a whole in one way or another.
But I would say that in a 1 char world there needs to be a limited respec option, an expensive hard and very in-frequent respec.
As long as there was a way for me to respec without paying real money to do so i have no problems with only being allowed to have one character. Plus it makes the real hardcore people buy like 5 accounts so more money for the company lol.
Currently Playing: Fallen Earth Played and liked: TCOS, Vanguard, Guild Wars, DDO Played and didn't like: CO, MO, STO, DF, AoC, WAR, WoW, EQ2, EVE, most f2p Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, Secret World

The question is how much this will affect those with only one account.

In Earthrise you can learn every skill in the game, without any restrictions to classes or races. There's no need to respec at some point.
An alt is primarily used to travel incognito, with the purpose of ripping people off, taking advantage of them, or otherwise evading responsibility for a set of actions on your main.
Dissatisfied with your guild? Roll an alt and join your rivals!
Need some extra cash? Roll an alt and make some easy money!
Want boobs instead of pecs? Roll an alt and tranny it up!
About the only thing alts have been good for is testing out other character archetypes. But in upcoming games, as well as games like Darkfall, Entropia, and even Ultima Online (Siege Perilous) alts have been done away with. This is a good move, by these designers. One I'd personally like to see repeated.
When class based games emerged alts became a way to simply test out the waters of the classes you werent playing. As time went on they seemed to become a filler for lack of content. Done with everything on your main? Well go roll an alt and do it all over again, but this time with new shiny skills yay!
However this is also seemingly a hurting factor to mmo's as well. If the game world seemed linear and shallow on your main, running it through a second time on an alt is just going to emphasize this reality even further and will most likely burn you out of the game much faster.
Games like SWG did not need multiple character slots (even though a lot of people bought secondary accounts for crafters) due to if you wished to change your class in a way, you could remodel it in any way you chose. Why these games have gone away for the overly simplified class systems is beyond me. I would be far happier in a game where I could shape and mold my character as I chose as time progressed, instead of simply needing to log out in order to try something different.
Didnt final fantasy 11 already do this.. and doesnt finaly fantasy 14 plan on having the same plan?
You had to pay extra for more characters but you only needed 1 character anyway.

i usually dont make alts in the MMO's i have played.......i had 1 character in WoW, Vanguard, TCOS and Fallen Earth so thats where my comment came from. Wasnt really thinking about the mechanics of the game when i made this comment lol.

I am looking soo forward to this game. I can't agree more, alts have definitely enabled bad behaviour. Only having one toon will , like you said, make you "invest" yourself into it and make you a little more aware of what a bad rep means.

On a skill based game i prefer it above anything else, because that makes you want to check your behaviour on the character you play, because once your reps gone, it's quite hard to gain it back or trust for that matter, which again nullifies or atleast lowers the amount of dickwads in MMO's
On the other hand, i wouldn't want to be restricted to 1 character per server on a class based system simply because i might get bored with the current class or simply would want to create a "secondary" option to my playstyle, thus its a NONO for class based MMO's
So i voted yes, and i've already played such a game that only allowed only 1 char and everyone knows what that game is.
I would actually prefer only one character and one server, but only as long as (if there were classes) I could change my role/class and (if there were levels) level to a lower level at any time. I usually will roll alts to experience the lower level game play without being way too powerful.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Absolutely if it is implemented in the proper way.
SWG pre-cu was 1 character per account but it had a skill system where you can easily change your profession when you wanted to. It was not limited to level and class.
Wouldn't be a problem for me, as I only focus on one character in any MMORPG (which inevitably results in long hours of the day trying to decide which class to play, 'cause I don't look back).
On the other hand, there would have to be a lot to do to keep people's interest for one character.
Didn't read the whole thread, sorry, but answer is definite yes, as far as I'm concerned.
- forces people to think a bit longer what name and looks they choose for the character, as well as what stats/skills they choose = characters look a lot more personal and roleplaying friendly
- less rerolling
- people fear tarnishing their e-reputation
- better sense of community, to the point that people wonder 'who is that?' when a new guy enters the town
- no crafting and banking alts, don't really belong in RPG's
- less rule breaking, alts usually make exploiting, scamming and macroing easier and safer for those are into it

Go to front to vote your option people!
I would prefer to play a game without alts. The concept of "Alts" is archaic. It must go.
Darkfall does this for sure.
Final Fantasy Online does this, but you have the option of paying another dollar or 2 a month for an extra character slot.

Honestly what good is an alt?

1 char per server is the way i like it..its one of the good things Darkfall has...
Sandbox? Yes.
Themepark (with classes)? No.
Seeing as Earthrise is the former and not the latter, I don't mind one character per account.
In answer to the OPs question, Christ, no way.
Why?
Why?
Because you could only play as one class, that sux!
