Meh just a little heads up,

most of you know that I reveived my computer yesterday from ibuypower.com. And after playing it for about 10 minutes it totaly froze, so I was like...weird, so i rebooted and after about another 30 minutes it froze again.

So I called there tech support who said that it is probably somthing to do with the memory (ram) and that I could send back the whole computer for repair or they could send me memory cards (which they would charge me for, and then credit back to me if the old ones where defective)

So I said "no" i'll just send back the whole unit for repair (which puts me out another 3 weeks for a comp) and it turns out that since I live in Alaska I would have to pay the shipping both ways on it. (which would be over $200.00) so I asked to speak to a service rep, and he said the same thing, so i talked to his supivisor, who said the same thing.

Anyways to make a long story short I am filing a claim with Visa so they will credit my money back so I can return the computer. the whole thing is a huge mess.

list of things wrong with computer, 15 hours after receiving it:

Possible ram cards bad (comp freezes)

sound doesn't work (not the motherboard sound OR the sound card itself)

They said if I bought widows vista that it would be a free upgrade to Windows 7, well its not. microsoft said the upgrade would be "almost no cost to free" so there could be a cost with it. And I have to wait for ibuypower.com to send me a cupon for windows 7 (which the wait time on those is around 3 weeks -ibuypower service rep)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyways... So yeah as you can imagine I am very very upset right now. So just a warning, don't buy from them.

I'd suggest buying from Newegg in the future.  I've had problems  with some of the computer equipment I've bought from them, but I've always been able to send it back to them for refunds or a new item without fuss.

:(   ;;               I just wanted a sweet working computer. *sigh* does newegg do custom builds?

you can purchase all the parts to build your own rig from newegg, which is actually better than buying a custom built on from a company like ibuypower. I like to know exactly what parts are going into my system and there is a bit of pride in knowing I just built a kickass rig.

I saw that but couldnt bring myself to comment. The poor guy is already having enough problems. I could just picture him with a crash cart and those paddles screaming "CLEAR!!!"

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. I hope I don't run into something similar.

My PC (which I use strictly for playing games) recently bit the dust (heat related problems I am guessing). I haven't built a PC in awhile so I decided to customize and purchase one from a company. I looked at Alienware, ibuypower, and CyberPower. After comparing all of the reviews from the past 6 months or so, I decided to go with CyberPower. CP seemed to have reviews which started out awful, but had been greatly improving, while the exact opposite was occuring for ibuypower and Alienware. CP also seemed to have more selections for the actual hardware.

I just purchased the PC today and put a rush on it (I'm an inpatient SOB when I can't play my games). I'll let you know how my experience goes but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Unfortunately, it seems your situation is repeated way to often.

    Sorry it went that way.

I told you it was better to build the system yourself.

Anyway if a system doesn't work, they should pay for everything, transport included.

If they don't, they are not a serious business............

By the way, does it freeze randomly or when you fire a software or play a game?

It might be a memory error, but it could be fixed modifying the BIOS.

I mean if the Windows loads up, it means that the hardware is working, there could be a problem of settings or hardware not attached properly to the motherboard.

Does the computer freeze up only when your playing a game, or does it freeze up in general use?

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Companies like IBuyPower and Cyberpower are nothing like they were 5 years ago.  Now they just slap the systems together and sometimes they even toss in refurbished parts and used ones that have been sent back for one reason or another.   They are no longer reliable sources for PC buyers.

Your best bet is to build your own.  It is cheaper and you learn something about computers.   There are lots of good sources on the Internet that take you step by step.   I use to buy from Cyberpower years ago until they ripped me off on one system I ordered.   It was all screwed up and the kept sending me bad and used parts!   So I sent the whole thing back, got my refund and the cost of shipping returned and built my own.   Have built my own since then.   If I can do it, anyone can.

How to Build Your Own Gaming Computer  <<<<  read it here.

Purchase parts from places like Newegg and then assemble.

Well first off, yeah I know building one myself would have been better. and I think thats what I might end up doing.

Second, they said they would pay to repair/replace any hardware that needed it. BUT i'd have to pay for the shipping from alaska, which is $109.00 each way.

And as far as the freezing the first time I was loading spore onto the comp and it froze, and the second time I had 1 web page open with 1 tab open. (I was looking for some virus software) and it froze.... So it seems to be kinda random. I dunno.

ok try this. might help limit the total number of possible errors.

right click My Computer and click manage tab in that menu.

then click on event viewer. and go though each menu under that tab. and see if windows reports any errors.

any OS errors should popup in red text, might help you isolate the freezing if its system related.

now if its hardware its alot harder to figure out. it could be Ram stick related or even your hdd hard to say. if you have spare pc parts laying around you could try switching out parts and see if it improves it.

i always find doing long distant tech support a pain in the backside cause its so simple to miss a simple wire or screw lol

i'd suggest building your own PC IF you have a general idea on what your doing. alot of motherboards come with installation instructions but if your not sure what your doing its generally unwise to do it by your self (no offence intended just lots of first timers fry their pcs very easy)

the bonus to getting a store built one is extended warrenties so if a part is messed up they can/have to replace it... self built only get the 1 year from factory... so its totally up to you if you want a pre-build or self build

hopefully you can get your system sorted out.

Everyone told you to build your own PC OP. You should have listened. We can help you step by step if you want to build it next time.

Yea, fat lot of good that warranty does you when you have to pay $200 in shipping AHAHA! MAN! what a gyp!

Now, see?  Had you bought everything online, you would have more channels in the event of a problem.  Firstly the supplier, who has their own return policies and customer service, and the manufacturer, who usually offers their own warranties.

I would recommend getting someone to help you put together a decent rig from individual parts bought online, I would recommend NEWEGG, I have bought thousands of parts form them and they really are dedicated to customer satisfaction.

Even if you just get on a good forum and have someone spec you out a setup, I'm sure people would be willing to do it, designing computers can be fun =)  Though I would suggest a more techy forum than this one =P

I bought a pc from ibuypower a couple years back and had no problems with them.

It sucks that you got a bum rig, it sounds like the qa tester didn't do their freaking job........

That's why  you buy from a reputable dealer.  The last prebuilt computer I got, I bought from Dell.  I got exactly what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay and their customer service is fantastic.  I had a problem with the monitor and they sent a new one out to me without any problems, it arrived less than 12 hours later!

If I was buying a prebuilt, I'd never buy from anyone without that kind of reputation.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

I highly suggest you just build your own by using newegg.com to buy your parts.

I for one had never built a computer before and recently (6 mo ago) built my first one at a cost of around $900, comparable pre-built computers for everything i had was around $1500-$1600.

Like I said this was the first time I ever did it and it took me around 4 hours from start to finish, just because I read and re-read all the instructions, I had no idea what I was doing.  If I had to another one I could probably do it in less than a hour now.

Have you tried DigitalStorm yet? Just google them.

Got mine custom made and it comes with a 3 year parts and labor warranty..Yes..I said THREE.

Only issue I had was with the 8800 Ultra Card...I sent it back and they sent me a new one. Only paid for shipping.

    Good luck
