What MMO do you think has the best battle system?

I think out of most games i've played FFXI has my favorite battle system. What are some of your favorites and are there other games out there that are similar or as good w/ skill chains and magic burst?

Honestly, WoW handles the best.  Its fluid, responsive, and diverse.  It has its problems, but its combat system isn't one of them.

World of Warcraft, because it is very smooth

     Wow. Smooth and fun.

Id say guildwars the combat system in that game is by far superior to wow or the likes in my opinion. I think this because each profession in the game has its own unique role that means much more than in other games of its kind and the builds you can use vary ALOT! making it interesting.

I like the AoC combat style, the old button smashing (EQ, wow) is a back number.

Fallen Earth. It's fun and simple. Aim, fire, repeat until monster dies. No point-click 'sandwich' combat like WoW or LOTRO. Just aim the crosshairs and pull the trigger.

This is something I can wholeheartedly disagree with. I think Fallen Earth has one of the most uninteresting, boring combat systems of all time.

your Opinion stands, but I have to disagree.

    in Guild Wars

    Warrior - are Melee

    Assassin- Melee

    Dervish- Melee

    Elem- Nuker

    Mesmer- Nuker

    Ranger - Physical Range

    Para- Physical Ranged

only difference is that the game is very limited, that Weapons are Class oriented.

WoW overall, FFXI at the endgame.

However, I'm open for new ideas.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

AoC was interesting. I'm personally a huge advocate of systems that give me my options rather than 'force me through' ability trees. Give me cooldowns, a mainstay of regular abilities, and a sprinkling of tree'd abilities.

Perhaps a better post would be one that questions the forum base not 'which MMO has the best battle system' but rather 'why does the battle system you enjoy most appeal to you the way it does'? This would yield more productive discussions.

That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

I can definitely see where you're coming from. It is repetitive, I mean, you just shoot.... shoot.... reload. I enjoy the fact that I actually have to dodge, weave, and lead targets though.

I must say, I also really like Tabula Rasa's combat. It didn't have a real twitch aiming system, but it made you think it did, albeit with stick targeting. I also liked the (somewhat few) skills they had though and the variety of guns and combat styles players could have. Of course, pulling off a finishing move and kicking the torso clean off the Bane was always fun.

Only MMORPG with an at least slightly interesting combat system what I can think of is DDO, all others are just the same, copies of EQ2 meaning you'll hit buttons 1-8 and watch as your opponent's hp goes down. Yaaay...

"Why DDO" you might ask? The answer is really quite simple. Manual attacking on melees, done by clicking mouse 2 or whatever you want to bind it to, no need to take a target and so on. All weapons which make sense have an "area of effect"; such as staves, larger two handed weapons etc, they hit targets in an arc infront of you with Glancing blows.

Blocking? Yup, done manually, you hold down Shift, or whatever you want to bind block to and it increases your Armor Class etc, blocking also links to tumbling, which means rolling around to avoid arrows / ray-type spells meaning no more wow heat seeking arrows, you can manually dodge them.

Then comes the topic of archery, in all other mmorpgs you just once again hit the skills from 1-8 but here, in DDO you fire with mouse2, your attack button or whatever you have it set to again. Your arrows aren't heatseeking, so you have to lead the target manually if it's running say sideways. It requires skill and learning the system, also manually leading the target greatly adds to immersion and it's rather unique to play with a full party of archers.

Now you might think that there aren't skills if everything is done by mouse2, but that is so wrong. There's basic things what everyone gets, such as trip and sunder which quite logically trip your opponent or decrease his armor. But there are also your typical mmorpg attacks such as slicing blows which add bleeding, stunning blows etc and archers get many shot which allows them to fire multiple missiles for a short time instead of just one.

Also the magic, yes... Low level magic might seem weak but when we go a bit higher you get instant kill spells which only require your opponent to roll a save or die. Then you get of course direct damage and aoe spells depending on your wishes, of course there are also charm spells which you rarely see in other mmorpgs.

And because the system is based on d&d 3.5 edition rules, we can't forget the freedom of creating your very own character. Want a halfling fighter/wizard who can throw fireballs depending on situation? Sure, what about a dwarf bard with a greatsword? Elf paladin with two swords and a mix of arcane magic from sorcerer?

    Just my two cents. :)

We?re all dead, just say it.

I'm going to go with DAoC because it's the only PVPMMO I know of with more than 2 factions.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

    "MMO"?  Planetside.

    "MMORPG"?  World of Warcraft.

Id have to go with AoC on this one.

    Just to make things clear...
I speak for myself and no one else, unless i state otherwise mine is just an opinion. A fact is something that can be independently verified, you may challenge such but with proof. You have every right to disagree with me through sound argument, i believe in constructive debate, but baseless aggression will warrant an unkind response.

    Best combat system :

PvE Dungeons and dragons online because its tactical and the mobs actually have some AI, very diverse abbilties.

    PvP Spellborn, nothing comes close.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I agree with Spellborn. I actually forgot about it. That game has a great combat system.

Is Spellborn still going? I was going to try it out just to see the combat system but that Secure/Guardian protection would not let be run the free 2 week option.

    AoC for me so far.

I'm not saying it's the best, but I love the combat system of CoX.

It's fast, fun and hectic at times. Lots of different powersets that allow for many combat options.

Spellborn combat system is the best i'v seen so far

WoW definitely has the most fluid. That and the fact boss fights feel like I'm playing a console action game make it a very fun game, even though its lacking in other content like player housing and an in game music system like LotRO. LotRO has to have the worst combat system. It is slow paced and unsatisfying. If it wasn't for its combat and lack of a normal pvp system I'd play it over WoW..Champions Online also has a very fun combat system obviously designed for console players in mind. WARs combat feels like a slightly tweaked LotRO combat. Oh, and Fallen Earths combat leaves something to be desired. It isn't a FPS, but it wants you to play it as such. Ranged weapons are imbalanced and the hitboxes are all whacked out.

By far the Monster hunter and phantasy star series. That is what real combat is all about. If I move left I dodge left, If I click X I swimg my weapon.

    AoC takes it for me.

    Guild Wars is second.
