I played it and wasn't impressed. I think the games had better success in Europe because its been out longer than here in the US, but, it still isn't all that great I didn't feel.

Funny, when you look on the number of subs it is one of the smallest games around. Df is so "popular" because it's fans are lobbying it more than most others.
I have nothing whatsoever against Darkfall but calling it popular is wrong. The DF fans are however a lot more dedicated than the fans of most other games.
I am rather impressed that Avi have been able to keep the game running and updating it, so the game is somewhat succesful but you can't compare it with games like LOTRO, Eve or Guildwars in the number of players.
And I would be forced to state that popularity is about the number of players. Brittney Spears is more popular than Trent Reznor, she sells more records. That doesn't mean that Brittneys albums are better than a Nine inch nails albums, but popular doesn't mean better.
