Ive played AC2 FFXI and lineage2beta,EQ2beta,WoWbeta(best mmorpg for me at moment).
And i make this thread becouse to many comepare to many times GW with WoW and thats dumb there 2 differnt games.
And played E3event and this weekend event.
Im gonne play WoW becouse thats a mmorpg big open world to explore have to do lot of things major quest smalls quest many many quest to do and on pvp server plenty of pvp much better then GW.
But why i played then GW in both events is becouse i like to play next to WoW a fast simple hack and slash with simple game play for some short fast fun thats GW nothing more.
I like GW and gone buy it but i absolutely not comepare it to WoW those two games are totally different.
So for me WoW as my main game and guild wars for some short simple fast hack and slash and pvp for free and thats nice.
But i can understand some love this type of game and dont love mmorpgs thats ok go for it have fun but dont comepare cows with sheeps two differnt animals:P

MMORPG = massive multiplayer online role playing game
guild wars = masiive? yes.. multiplaer? yes.. online? yes.... role playing game? yes...
since all are yes.. it obviosuly IS an MMORPG.
Lol ok if you say so np have fun.
You not seems to know differents between real mmorpgs and guildwars lol.
IF you say M stands for M stands O stands for .... yes your right lol but that dont makes it a real mmorpg its simple hack and slash no deep involving story with deep game play and exploring world.
Every thing in GW is fast and simple and i know i have played E3 and last weekend event.
Or it gonne chance much when it will be released but i dont think so.
But i gonne play GW dont get me wrong, its only no mmorpg like FFXI,AC2 or WoW capice:P
Im affraid not lol, but dont wurry you prolly never will:P
I don't consider it as a MASSIVE multiplayer rpg ....why? Well because mmorpgs for me is a game where a MASSIVE amount of people join you to take part of the game, the only MASSIVE in guildwars will only be the numbers of ppl playing guildwars...
1) Server is beeing divided in districts limiting the number of players around
2) you can only play with MAX 8 players, you are never participating with the other thousands of players in whatever you doing (and thats what mmorpgs do!).
/agree
I think the devs call it a CORPG (Cooperative Online Role Playing Game) instead of a MMORPG.
I have to say that I don't know what my "real" MMORPG besides it will be, I think I'll stay with DAoC. EQ2 is from SoE, so it's gimped by nature, CoH isn't medieval enough, and WoW disappointed me utterly.
Which is sad, I had high hopes that WoW could turn around the MMORPG-genre with some fresh ideas (as GW did, just still being a real MMORPG), yet in the end, it's a 100% EQ1-clone with sucky graphics.
For now, I can only dream on how wonderful Ironforge would look if not for this borked graphic's style...

Role Playing Game = No
I cannot see this as a roleplaying game at all. Just because you level up a character , give him/her skills, increase stats, get equipment, etc. it does not make it a roleplaying game.
For it to be a roleplaying game, there needs to be some actual roleplaying. Guild Wars is a Competitive Massively Online Game, it could be a roleplaying game as well, but I can't see anybody who would even try to RP because the gameworld (so far) is completely void of anything that would lend itself to roleplaying. This may not stop people from trying, and I would really love to see more people roleplay in Guild Wars. The scenery is beautiful, but it's like a backdrop painting that you cannot interact with. We need building we can enter (Taverns), we need a variety of roleplaying aspects other than the main Guild vs. Guild we see mostly in GW.
This is just my opinion, but I think a lot of people would agree that Guild Wars just doesn't feel like a mmorpg like the ones we are accustomed to. It could be, but right now, after both events, I can't really see it. Roleplayers will be playing WoW, Everquest II, etc.
Guild Wars will succeed in what it was meant to succeed at, it's fun competitive guild battles and PvP.
Don't knock GW for being diffrent I like it because its new and fresh and has great graphics, besides what you played were demos simple playable fragments of the game as a whole and no one said that the game would be anything like that. WoW hmmmm? If the graphics weren't so Disney Toon Townish it would be a great game but for the simple fact that they are has me waverying. All Im saying is that don't say the game is bad unless you play the full game first.
Yes, feel the pow-wa!

"No roll playing" if by saying M'lady all the time then no, or standing in a mob outside Corellia leveling overnight while you sleep then no, or spending 3 hours making crafts so you can level up your crafting skill tree just to sell a newbie sword for a loss then no.
You have to pretend to really care about all that time wasting garbage in so called traditional rpgs to say that Guild Wars is anything but pure fun.
At the core of all mmorpg's other than the Sim's, Second Life or a Story in the Desert is combat, from the dawn of roll playing card games that was and is the premise, get used to it or go play EA games.
Lineage, SWG, CoH, DAoC, AC1, ACII, EQ1, Ultima, Horizons, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online the list stretches on longer than their subscription fee's, they are all the same.
Guild Wars showed us a few of the areas, a few of the missions and a small slice of the content in the game you pay for ONCE, anyone who played the last event saw a totally different story, and terrain than this one.
Guild Wars is one of the only true mmorpg's that doesn't confuse fun with time management.

And that's why I like it!
Besides, GW is a RPG! Or, alternativly, if you say it's not, DAoC, CoH, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, AC1, AC2, and whatever aren't either - they have as little Roleplaying as GW has...

Huh? am i missing something here lol they have same amount of roleplay then GW LMAO here get real man or you never have play these games or you absolutely have no clue what your talking about :P
I am only point out on my experience with GW in e3 event and last weekend event and its fun fast pace hack and slash simple gameplay and simple missions while most of the above mention games are far more complex games and worlds.
But i like to play GW becouse next to WoW its nice to play a few hours a week simple H&S game with simple mission or pvp and have some fun.
Blah Blah Blah
Face it GW is something new WoW EQ2 and some other titles are the same thing over again just better..
I'm not whining that they are bad games cuz there not. GW does belong in the mmorpg list if you can't see that well then that's your own fault.
Sure there aren't ''thousands'' of people in a city like in wow but there are more people playing you just can't see em. the mission u use a party form one and go on your way= same as wow and all the ones u get exp also the same u get loot also the same guilds, pvp arena, trading, private message someone make friends and add them to your friend list. all thats stuff is in other mmorpg to.
So i don't see why it aint an mmorpg
Okay sure it's not so big its not so advanced (yet!?!) it's simple hack and slash.
But all that ''advanced'' stuff gets boring, it's easy to controll you won't need a handbook for it (not that you needed it for the other ones either) just making a point
What the hell is wrong with that!

This game has been developed to the n'th degree of a new genre' in online gaming.
The new title for this type of game is: CORPG or "Cooperative Online Role Playing Game"
For those of you not thinking it is a "true" RPG, I urge you to try this weekends Beta Event and to check out my review on the Discussions entitled: The "REAL" DL' on GW here! GW is a MMORPG, its just a little different.
Yeah, sure, there isn't the same exploration that their is in other games. there are just zones and a basic road to travel, some roads leading to hidden goodies but they take you off course.
but EQ was made up of zones too. i really never felt that EQ had any exploration fun, seeing as you could just get a map of it anyways and find what your looking for. EQ does have more land you can walk on, but what's the point? usually your just trying to get to one particular spot anyways so you can camp it.
moving on. I do think GW is a mmorpg, even if it is a little different from normal ones. it does have a story line. when i played the world preview i remember the 2nd mission cut scene was the beginning of your next mission, where you would have to rescue people. also, saying that the game is not a RPG just because you don't roleplay in it is like saying games like AC, where from my experience NO ONE roleplays in it (and if they do people make fun of them), is not an RPG, or ...i don't know... Paper Mario isn't a role-playing game.
Basically what RPG's boil down to is advancement of skills, armor, weapons, stats, maybe levels, and also a turn based combat system. now though it doesn't seem like MMORPG's are turn based, they are. there is a timer on each attack you make, and you take a certain amount of damage. this games combat system is very similar to AC2 (auto-attack and a couple of skills every once in awhile with timers).
so yeah, thats my opinion. and forestdutch is the most illiterate person i have seen type on the internet. and seeing as it's the internet, that's pretty bad.
i dont get why some off u are trying to bash this game.
litterally like every other forum i hear people complaining about its not a real MMORPG. well what is a standard real MMORPG.
i think every mmorpg is different and the mmorpg genre is extremly broad.
i wish someone would just tell me a standard mmorpg, becasuse i played everquest for about an hour and i hated it. me and my friend were the only people we saw. then there is WoW which i played it and i liked it but i felt lost some of the time. there is also city of heroes which i havent heard any contraversy on if its an mmorpg and that is totaly insane. its just a different as guild wars.

HAHAH, WoW is not the best mmorpg atm, its a multi million dollar company that failed to be inovative in any sence. The game is boring, im playing ST now and I do not like it at all..

ahhaah he said best MMO for him. god doesent matter where your are or what forum your in you still love to bash WoW shut up. BTW guildwars is one of the best mmo's out there atm
There is a reason why it doesn't have a monthly fee, IT IS NOT AN MMORPG. The interface is MMORPG-like, but in actual questing and actual exploration, you merely have a team of 8 or so and that is that, you won't be meeting other people like a "true" MMORPG.

Heh, sorry but I couldn't hold back anymore on this subject. Since it's starting to die out, might as well throw in my views on it. Guild Wars is very tricky I guess on this subject. We could go back and forth (Which it seems like you guys have) on if it's a real mmorpg or not. Personally, to me it might not be a mmorpg that many are used to, so I think it's a new type of mmorpg. Which I think Guild Wars has said crpg or something. If you wanna look at other mmorpg's and Guild Wars, I see really a few differences. Okay teams, yes you only have like 4-8 people on a team, instead of games where you have up to like 20, 30 or whatever. But what Guild Wars does is makes it so you only have to focus on a few members, and keeps everyone on track for a mission. Okay, speaking of that, missions and quests. There are quests in the game as well, so if someone wants to say that you don't speak to NPC's and get quests, your wrong. I took a few during the WPE. Also with the "districts", I hear people not liking it, but if it's to help with lag and make it easier for you to find your friends, what isn't to like? Dare I say a game that cares about your time and wanting to make your life easier? And PvP, I for one like the idea of keeping it in an area, not all over a town. I think what really gets everyone upset is that it's just you and your team when out fighting. Seeing how a larger group can get better stuff, or take another groups stuff. Instead, they made the system of loot fair. Plus now no spamming of skills, you actually have to think before you do. Right now, who's to say whether Guild Wars is a mmorpg or not. But if it has a great success (And not because of no monthly fee) maybe other games that come out in the future, will use this kinda "system" Guild Wars has done. Just my take, but I agree that Guild Wars is fun and it's massive. All that needs to be said.
Thanks for the complement.. most people associate the term MMORPG with games that require you to sacrifice your rl in order to keep up with the other players, and addictive games that really aren't fun, but you wind up playing them because you are "addicted". GW is nothing like that, it's fun, and you can get right in the game so it doesn't require so much time that you won't be able to have a rl, like an MMORPG.
Don't you feel difference between CORPG and MMoRPG?If you want to play in MMoRPG go and buy WoW.
I agree that 8 people is not much , but there will be expansions and i'm sure they will max it up to 16 or even more.GW made by Blizzard developers.I saw so much beautiful places and i had a lot of fun.
Just stop fight , step back and WATCH around . You don't need to hurry , enjoy this game.
Hello from Underdark.
Hello from Underdark.
Guild Wars is an MMORPGs as Diablo was an RPG.............so if you are one of those people that considered Diablo an RPG then it is likely that you will consider Guild Wars an MMORPG.
The puritane RPGiers like myself, don't considerate Diablo as an RPG, but simply as an hack & slash with Roleplay elements.......call it an hibryd if you want.
The same you can say about Guild wars, it is a Massive Online Hack & Slash Game with Roleplay elements, but it doesn't fit fully the RPG category because there are several elements of RPG missing in GW.
It is not by chance that the makers of Diablo are the same team behind GW, basically ArenaNet tried to inport the Diablo format in an Massive Online Environment.
So GW is not a "pure" MMORPG as Diablo wasn't a "pure" RPG, but in the end........who cares?
I always enjoyed playing Diablo and I am sure that I will enjoy playing GW as much.
I don't mind if people includes GW in the MMORPGs category, because in the end GW is closer to an MMORPGs than any other game category.........it is just slightly different.
The important thing is that you don't confuse GW with WOW or EQ2, because they are completely different games, as Diablo was a completely different game from Baldurs Gate, which was a "pure" RPG.
D2s more like hack and slash, And no, Guild wars is not an mmorpg, it would be almost the last thing i would call it
Wow is that an apple`!
