You know what? After 5 years of playing MMO's i've finally decided why i just can't get into them anymore. MMO's are a second rate genre, and every game in the said genre is a piece of crap. Each and every one of them. We only play these games because of the community, because we can share the expirience with other people. But after all these years i just can't take it anymore... i mean come on! Every MMO is the same, with no difference at all.
So from now on stick to regular gaming, at least there you get a product that has immersive, polished and FUN gameplay.
Fuck you MMO's. Fuck you.
Flame away.

flame away you say.
I guess that you will not beable to delete your mmorpg account and if you can I bet that you will stick around like the rest of the burned out junkies (like myself). And yeah. Your post had some nice points.

No flame. Pretty much agree.
Well you are partly right of course.
You have Blizzard and then indeed you have the "crap".
Problem is : before WOW it was crap and after WOW it was crap.
Blizzard made from a very crappy industry even an "undeserved" respected" one.
I know I played Ultima and Zork 1 in the 80's already. Back then it was already crap.
Pencil @ paper was always 100 times better.
We know that.
I have to agree with you on WoW still being the best game out there.
However, EQ was not 'crap' for its time, neither was DAoC or Ultima Online.
All WoW really did was polish it all to create a 'next gen' standard for MMOs.
I am eagerly awaiting a game that will outshine WoW in a similar matter.
I wholeheartedly agree. I try every MMO and not one of them has me coming back for more. I play and have played MMOs for the community factor. I play with friends and enjoy sharing the experience, but that experience dies too quickly.

I tend to disagree Zorn. WoW is mostly a solo quest grind to max level, then some more grinding with raids and instances, etc. Is it more polished than pretty much every other game? Absolutely. Is it more compelling gameplay? Definitely not.
My take anyway. By the way, you have a post style that makes your posts stand out more than any other poster I can think of. I don't even need to look at the name. If I see sentences separated into their own little paragraphs with a few random ones underlined, I know it's you. More a compliment than anything, as your posts are very easy to read and usually pretty well though out (even though I almost always disagree).
Cheers.
Was of the same mind, untill I fell in love with Fallen Earth
I thought I would never get that special 'first mmo' feeling again. Luckily I was wrong ^_^
My brand new bloggity blog.
Well, it is the balance and polish that makes the game-play more compelling. If you fail in a raid encounter, you probably have an idea what went wrong. If you die in PvP, you most probably know the reason.
WoW's game-play does not have a huge RNG component like so many other games out there. There is no overwhekming class imbalance, and most classes can fill multiple roles. The game is also extremely accessible and the learning curve is well-designed. This is what keeps the masses happy.
I would love to see game with a more active combat system and less constricted character development, however for such a game to be successful they would have to still equal or beat WoW in accessibility, polish and game balance.
That is the thing, you are not a typical gamer. Be honest here, Fallen Earth is not polished enough to cater to the masses like WoW, not to mention the lack of content.

I'm sorry, class balance and the ability to fill multiple roles do not equal compelling gameplay. For that matter, neither does accessibility and a well-designed learning curve. I won't even argue with you that WoW does those things better than most. That said, a solo quest grind (kill x of this, gather y of that, yadda, yadda, yadda) to max level followed by a grind of another sort is the most mindless progression model I can imagine. It does not encourage any sort of thought on behalf of the player. I would very literally rather watch paint dry than pick up twenty or so quests from a quest hub, run around for an hour or two killing random mobs because my journal instructs me to, then run back with all the pointless crap I've accumulated for my quest givers. Utter nonsense.
It's true that WoW didn't start that crap (well, maybe the solo quest grind), but it certainly didn't do anything to end it either. Does it make for compelling gameplay? Hell no.

Class balance makes for compelling game-play, so does accessibility. If there is nothing to pick up the players for the get go, the game will lose subscribers. If classes are horribly unbalanced, the game-play will be horrible. What you posted was your opinion of the game, what I posted was the reason the majority of the current subscriber base play the game. I do not think WoW has awesome or excellent game-play, it is just the best MMO out there for the moment.
Name me a game that has substantially better game-play than WoW, and I will give it a twirl.
I'm not really sure what we're arguing about at this point, lol. Yes, WoW is better than other MMOs. I still think the entire progression model is a joke. Just because WoW is better at supporting a style of gameplay I think is garbage, doesn't mean it is in fact a good game (in my opinion, naturally). I can't think of any MMO with substantially better gameplay than WoW (unless you want single player games, but almost all are better in my opinion). But I've already stated that MMOs are all on the same level of dreadfullness, so I'm not really sure what you want me to say. This is not a WoW-bashing post. It started as a response to a very pro-WoW post, which I had issue with.
Based on the italicized line in the quote, I'd say we agree 100%.
Nah.
I think you have a point. I'm feeling burned out on MMOs too (hence no flaming).
It's just that for some reason, I'm finding it even harder to enjoy regular singleplayer games. They just feel sorta lonely and I know I can always go back to my last save game if something bad happens. In the end, it just feels a bit pointless and there is no sense of achievement whatsoever. Most of them don't have the content to last very long either. Perhaps a week or two at the most if I'm lucky. So it ends up being rather expensive compared to just subscribing to one, two or sometimes three MMOs that I can switch between as the burnout dictates.
I'm a big ol' fluffy carewolf. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I pretty much agree. Feels like a recycled sitcom on prime-time tv...i.e: change elves with pirates/sci-fi/anything, but keep the same mechanics. Seems like creativity is out the window on actual gameplay. EQ created the model, WoW polished and packaged it, and now its being pumped out left and right.
Exactly.
When you look at it, MMOs are pretty much the same. Especially the ones that came out recently... WoW / AoC / WaR / Aion ... There are differences in the "design", but most of the core mechanics are the same. Target a monster, press 1-2-3-4 to do your skills, collect XP. Repeat a million time to reach max lvl...
Its getting boring, really. New MMOs come out all the time, and everytime I get the same feeling "been there, done that...". There is nothing new in the genre lately.
I've been wondering, why wont they try something new? I'm getting bored of leveling my characters from 1-X by killing a million boars. Dont get me wrong, character progession is a must in every MMO.. but would it be possible to try to progress in a different way? Eve online, guild wars, heck, even DARKFALL did it. Its possible.. but the major studios prefer to keep the "leveling" system.
I love MMOs... the community, the social aspect... making new friends, enemies.. its a lot of fun that you cant have in "normal" multiplayer games. But I decided that I wont play ANY other mmo that make me waste my time by killing 3 million deers before I can have fun. Guild wars 2 maybe? Mortal online? I dont know. We'll see.
I'm almost exactly the same. I've kept re-installing and downloading MMO's over and over. Now I don't know what to do...
Nothing feels original enough or excites me like the first flush of the mmo. I am forever waiting for that part of me to light up again, perhaps it will one day. Maybe if I get a spanking hot gaming rig and buy all the best looking games under the sun it will snap back, but if it doesn't, I would've just blown a whole loada money.
Once again, I will find another MMO which has good concepts, an interesting story, and then I will try and stick with it. Find a guild, enjoy each little quest like I should and see how it pans out. I advise that to anyone recovering a burn out. I hope it turns out, cools down and everything thats been burnt away, grows back.
I feel for anyone who's in the same state of mind as I, because MMO's are more than just games and whatever they are to you matters.
Peace.
I said "flame away" because if i myself saw someone post such profanity and insult the genre i like, it would be a normal reaction to flame him.
Anyway, when Ultima came out it was awesome and unbelievable. After a few months of playing it i was just imagining the stuff comming out in the later years, all the possibilities of the genre and how it can expand.
Boy was i wrong. Ok seriously, i think this was the biggest leap backwards in THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! Every year that passed, an MMORPG allowed us less and less to do in it's game world. Now we have the terms "theme park" and "sandbox" That's also bullshit. It shouldn't be like that, Ultima came out so many years ago and did it right, it should have only expanded from there, not divide and allow us this and that.
English (as you can probably tell) is not my native language, so i think i'm blabbering and can't express my point correctly, so i'll just stop. It felt good to get it off my chest in the first post, been meaning to do that in a long time but i kept hoping it would get better.
I am in the same place as well with my MMO game play. I started out with a good game, made some very good in game friends and lasted almost 2 years. I then changed over to a new MMO and found another good group of players and had about a year or so of game play. Then I became bored of the same ol same ol game play. Socializing can only take you so far. If the gameplay becomes boring, you will not stay.
I have tried about 7 MMO's in the last year. I just can't find the style that equals good gameplay for me. I get bored and switch. It could be the game, the community or just the fact that I am changing as I get older. I just don't know why I can't find a game to play and stick with it.
I am going to stop playing MMO's for a few months. I will be playing the Dragonage game starting Tuesday. I want to see how the single player RPG will be compaired to the last 4 years or so of MMO's. Another reason is that Dragonage is supposed to be similar to SWTOR from bioware. I will miss some of the social stuff, but the game play may or may not be better. I will have to see.
I will not leave the MMO genra for ever. I will go back, I just want something different. If I can leave long enough, it may bring back what was missing from the MMO's for me. The idea of the MMO is still the best for an overall gaming experience. SPG's are just too short for the money. Here's to hoping MMO's change for the better in the future.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

I don't know.. at 5 years of MMO playing you're pretty much a MMO toddler .. okay maybe a teenager. Sounds like you're burned out. I can relate, as I've been there. I'm not sure what you were hoping to accomplish with the last couple of sentences.
I'm going to guess that you were bored and decided to troll a bit, to hopefully get people enraged.
Regardless, I hope your thread ends up satisfactory to you.
Best of luck in the future.

In this last week i think i can completely agree with the OP, I literally have no intention to play any game anymore. I quit my main game during summer and started beta testing a bunch of games, gave loads of feedback, begged devs to change somethings/delay launch but they went with it anyway and at launch those things were criticized like no tomrw. I said no worries, in a year or so these games should be fully baked and ill play them then but well what should i do for a year now? i stopped beta testing around mid august - early september and decided i'll check out all the other p2p games as just recently this year i had finished playing every single free game out there. I had some fun in september and by october my list for games decent enough was at about 6 games, i tested some more games did 2 more betas and checked out the new f2p games released and list still remained at 6.
As of right now i have experienced 95% of any type of MMORPG released in the last 5 years and in my opinion there's less than 10 games out there worth playing, is this really what this genre has come to? The upcoming games show some promise but many of them would be bugged and not have content at release as history has showed us so really I think it's safe to say that for the next 2 years this genre is going nowhere and only after that is there some hope that we see something worth looking at. Right now im debating either to find some other hobby or just sub to wow till i have more time and go back to eve till the fresh stuff comes out. Sometimes don't you just wish there were time capsules?
Yes Gabby, yes I do.
