Need people'e view on Aion

GolarumGolarum Member Posts: 151

Hello all,

I've been reading some stuff about Aion, I also played in the chinese Beta, and had preordered it but decided not to purchase it after all and have played it a little in the closed betas, so I know what the game is, the mechanics and all that.

What I need to know is where is the game at as of today...

Did they add anything new, or are they planning anything like very soon?

How is the community? Is it an active community? Are people really into PvP?

How would you define your experience right now without talking about endgame or grinding, just like the fun factor.

I am looking into getting into it, and to me it will be just a casual game I will be playing a couple of hours a week, something to fill in the PvP gap that I'm feeling hehe...

Please do not start arguing about game mechanics, don't troll, don't be abusive, just looking to get some insight...

Thanks

    Nothing worth mentioning.

Active yes, People are into pvp. Community is shrinking at an alarming rate though. Chances are the game will always have enough players to get by.  I'm sure at least a few servers will remain with high population by years end.

All end game and grinding aside, the fun stopped for me around level 31. Thus why Im not re-subbing after this months up.

It's good for PvP if that's what you want to do. Just don't expect to be very successful at lower levels.

There's your insight simple and to the point.

Go ahead and play this came casual. PvP doesn't really start until lvl 25. Play casual 2-3 hrs a week. Go ahead you might reach lvl 25 in about ohh maybe 5 years ...maybe.... I hit it hard for a month and a half. me and a friend even started our own Legion. Man was we pumped at first played night and day. We both cancelled our accounts around lvl 23 for me. My friend made it to 26 and realized we would not be viable for PvP until several more lvls due to bad gear which you cannot hope to get unless you fork out real money to the gold farmers just to be able to afford the best gear and enhancements you can get to keep from getting ripped to shreds in the Abyss. We have since moved to Fallen Earth and all i  can say is I may never play another MMO again. Fallen Earth,... I didn't know a game like this would ever be made. Even though I hated it at first! Of course we are not 14- 15 yr old kids eather. I'm sp glad the immature  ones don't play FE. I'm in gaming heaven. Would be nice to see some women playing though...they are few and far between as well. Still a breath of fresh air.

I may try Fallen earth. I have heard a lot of good about it from its players.

In your mid 20s gear should be relatively easy to get your hands on, especially later in the high 20s. If not, go do some work orders, level your crafting and get it high enough to make some mid-20s gear. Easy enough.

I played through the chinese version of Aion for a few months, I just bought the NA copy a week ago, level 29 on my Chanter with less than 4 hours a day. Not sure what you did wrong.

I got to 32 with 5 days played and the whole time I was having a blast (especially 25+!). It gets a tad dry from 20-25, but once 25 is around you get into the Abyss, get your hands on some pvp, instances & flying everywhere. I enjoyed it, but I also played EQ for the first 5 years of existence, so I guess I'm a tad masochistic. Lots of PvP everywhere and good quests that bring you into the enemy lands through rifts ripped open in your lands.

I play a Templar and while it's a tad hard to melee PvP, Wrender extremely overexaggerated. We definitely have our moments and they are great.

TL;DR If its your cup of coffee, you'll love it. If not, you won't. Basically just like every MMO out there.

He who keeps his cool best wins.

Are you sure you want to blame the game for not being innovative enough to gather money in game? Please.

What I love in Aion is that it makes you to work for your character. Develop it, learn to play it and use time to gather the materials and money to get gear. The exact opposite to WAR which was far too easy to gear and level up.

There is absolutely no need to bot or buy gold in Aion, unless you're looking for instant gratification. Heck, Dofus I played for 3 years I never made it to the level 200 which is the maximum level there.

I personally find 1-24 to be lame.  Most notably 20-24.  At 25 though the game turns pretty fun if you take the time to enjoy PvP via rifts and the abyss..

It's not a casual friendly game though.

You need people's view? from this place?

Improve Aion's Graphics with a simple text file that you can create by yourself:

-Increase in-game Field of View to 175% or more

-Increase view distance for players to 100 meters with camera at max distance

    -Lots of other settings

I would have thought the issue with playing a couple of hours a week is that it would take you a long time to level up and would basically be logging in to grind away at the level game during those hours. If I were to make a suggestion then WAR might be a better game for PvP, can do so at the start, and it has now been reorganised by EA under the wing of Bioware, so should improve, perhaps a good time to play that game seriously. Another possibility for casual game, if you do not play it already, is WoW since it has very good system for PvP battlegrounds as you level.

I'll echo other people's sentiments, and add that Aion is the least casual-friendly MMO to come out in years. With only a couple hours a week you'll have to wait 2 months or so until you'll reach the PvP part.

And to be viable for PvP, you will eventually need to be far more committed (time-wise) to make it all seem worthwhile.

WoW would probrably be the safest choice if you're really strapped for time, however.

Depends what you mean by viable in PvP,speaking from own experience that it takes a lot of dedication to get 2300 in arena in WoW and I never went for gladiator(one being the lack of proper partners).

  • GolarumGolarum Member Posts: 151

Well I read through everyone's comments and I am somewhat confused at some of the people's comments...

As I said, I played some chinese beta and some CB NA beta, and leveling wasn't as bad, it was actually too easy, In the CB beta weekends, I had played 2 out of all the weekends they offered, and I was pretty high, and I never felt it being too challenging.

But I do appreciate everyone's insight, I think I will give the game a try for a month and see by myself.

Whoever suggested WAR or WOW to me, they are not an option, I already played every existing mmo since 1996 with Meridian 59, and I would these 2 titles easily fall under my least favourite games list. But again, thanks for the suggestion.

For whoever said they will try FE because they heard good things about it, right now, it is the main game I'm playing, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a good niche mmo, but let me tell you, if you don't like crafting, if you don't like not having the most inviting graphics, if you don't like spending time speccing your character and working on him, then FE is not for you.

    Peace and thanks all

If it takes you ~2 months to reach 25, something is wrong. 29 with maybe 3-4 hours a day in less than a week this time around, and that's raising extractions and a bit of professions, too.

Agreed, if Aion is your main squeeze. The OP stated that this would played extremely casually ~ 2 hours per week. I think my initial timeframe is pretty accurate (possibly bit generous) if you were to play 16 hours over a  two-month period.

I understand what you guys mean, but it's my fault, I mislead you by saying a couple of hours per week. I wouldn't pay 60$ to buy the game and 15$ a month for 8 hours a month of gameplay, the couple of hours wasn't literal...

So let me rephrase, I will be playing it casually, maybe an hour each day in the morning before getting to work and a couple of hours on weekends :)

So I think I should be alright, I just decided today to wait until tomorrow to decide, because I will be getting my copy of Dragon Age Origins, and I will see what kind of time it will be taking to play that game before I get Aion.

I have done 29-31 in one day each of hardcore playing.

I have also done half of 30 to 31 on another character in about 6 hours of hardcore playing.

If a player comes from more hardore roots I doubt they will think the leveling in Aion is difficult.

But as it stands they are going to be adding a patch that evens out some of the higher levels with regards to xp per quest as well as xp for mob kills. So it should be a bit easier.

I'm of the opinion that any game can be played casually but that one can't expect to run with the upper level players if done so. If one has the temerment for it then it can be done though.

@ OP, its a grind m8. I played to lvl 40 it just gets worse. kept telling my self it would get better. Trying to make my self play it with my guild m8's. But the grim reality is you have to grind mobs to lvl, There is not enough content so you have to grind mobs to lvl.

I had high hopes for this game first 20 or so lvls where fun...

    Playing Darkfall EU1 Server

Unfortunately, I find a lot of games fun in the lower levels, but the creativity runs out at higher levels.  But the grind is sooo Korean and I am through with Korean games.

i'm lvl 39 assasin. I'll tell you one thing thats really misleading on these forumns. The pvp in this game isn't that great at all, depending on what you like.

For me personally, the abyss pvp 1v1 is non existent --> its a) to easy to run away or b) at this point in the game getting into the abyss at 25 you will be farmed by higher level players. Group pvp in the abyss is to whoever has the bigger force, i have NEVER seen an equal sized force fight an equal sized force.

The rift pvp is cool at the start but you soon realize that a) your group of 6+ just goes around killing people soloing or duoing. Eventually the opposing faction will gather a force thats 2x your numbers and you will get steam rolled.

the journey to 50 is extremely boring/repetitive. You really start to get sick of leveling (at least for me) when you hit like level 37.

what i thought was cool? everything for the first time in this game is really cool, i loved the flying/gliding aspect - of course until i realized how easy it makes for someone to run away.

The fortress sieges are cool, but over time they become very dry and meaningless. Attacking a fort +ab points + medals , bigger numbers win the fight (again). Also by high 30's you start to really realize how much pveing you have to do in order to get pvp points.

It had a lot of innovative things, and a lot of things i liked about it for the first month. But it all becomes very repetitive and boring as time passes... for me at least

    hope this helps

Its fun, but not really "real fun" till late 20s, after that it gets much better.  NC did a decent job with slamming the Spammers/Sellers pretty hard and that issue is pretty much gone thankfully.  All classes are not much fun till mid 20s.

If you dont join a good legion and if your are not social this game is a waste for you.  If you play a game for the community, PVP (light) and some good end game then you will like this game.

It is great that you like Fallen Earth - I might get it as well, while it is unlikely to have time to play it, I would like to support an indie developer with the guts to try something different.

On the other hand it is less great that you are bashing Aion for your own failings. Nothing that you describe is actually true.

If yopu are playing an mmorpg for a couple of hours a week you are wasting your time if you think a game can be designed around your needs and those of even less casual casual players.

You want to wait and just buy a character if you can only play 2 hours a week.

Seriously, its a bit like saying you want a game of teken to be meaningful in a game lasting2 seconds becasue 2 hours a week in a mmog is as rediculous a nothoon for an mmorpg as a 2 second bout in a console/beat em up game.....
