Thinking about starting the game

QuaxzQuaxz Member Posts: 4

I don't know if the game would really suit me, so here are some little things. I have a lot of questions, but some other people might have the same questions, so you can answer multiple people at the same time.

I don't really like to grind, I mean killing the same thing over and over, which seems to be absent from EVE because of the skill training system.

But, I've restrained playtime because of study/social life, I will be able to play for about 1 hour per day (3h on week end).  Will it be enough for a game such as EVE ?

Another thing is, do every areas looks the sames. Do you ever get bored of the areas. (This can be a big factor for me)

Also, will the ingame community be gentle to invite me in a corp even and help me out as a new player.  And is grouping really useful in this game (while not pvp'ing). Also, is the game social, I mean, will I often talk to people, meet people, talk over vent or are the people not really talking ?

What are the different aspect that I can choose to specialise in ?

Thanks a lot.

Eve is what you make of it. And because of that, the best thing to do is give it a shot. There is a 14 day Trial at http://www.eveonline.com/ .  I believe there is a 21 day Trial on Steam As Well.

    1. It can be.  You get out of EvE what you put into it.  If all you want to do is goof off for an hour or two a night, a few on the weekends, you very much so can do that.  No, you aren't going to become uber-rich, but I don't think you thought that.

    2.  It's space, it all looks like space.  Depending upon the faction "owner" of that space, the stations will be different, but thats about it.  Every system looks almost completely identical to each other.  There are a few contradictions to this rule.  A few.  But hey, its space.  Space over "here" looks just like space over "there".

    3. Yes, there are many corps in the game that actively recruit with little to no pre-reqs.  And I do mean actively.  I can think of but a handful of highsec systems you could fly to that don't have a jettison or anchored can sitting near a stargete advertising that they are recruiting.  Most corps that recruit newbies are usually more than willing to assist in beginner equipment / ships / skills.

    4. Yes, grouping in this game, whether it be for PvE or PvP, is of great value and reccomended.  They have added awesome ship mods and skills that can give HUGE bonuses to group members in nearly every aspect of the game.

    5. If you are not in a corp and you do not actively talk to other people you "fly by", no, you will not se a lot of communication.  In fact, I would venture to guess of the MANY systems I have visited in the last few days, only in a handful of them did I see any talking at all, let alone meaning conversations.  If you do not join a corp, do not expect to be talking to many other people.

    6. There are too many to list.  I hate to say that, but its true.  If you can think of a task that you could do in nearly any other MMO on the market, past or present, you can probably do it in EvE.  It doesn't matter what the genre is.  Any task you have encountered previously will have an EvE equivelent.

    7. You're welcome.

    Thanks a lot.

You ask question without context thus they can't be really answered.

1 hour play time per day can be fine for one playstyle but insufficient for another. For the same reasons grind might be or might be not necessary.

Environment is stale and not changing much...it is still space themed game in the end.

Grouping is as pointless as in any other PVE game just in EVE there is fewer content that would require a group.

Specialization is getting killed in EVE with upcoming expansion - once again a step for dumber EVE.

The game is as social as is your interaction with people you have around - your choice only.

OP you should bear in mind that it is only Gdemami that thinks this, because he's so butthurt about the change in moon mining meaning that 2 specific moon-mineral types won't be huge ISK fountains; to get the same ISK 6 or 7 types will have to be mined  (just as they are anyway at the moment, but with the value spread  more evenly).

Apparently this change makes 0.0 the same as empire, will pretty much end PvP forever and, as said above in some unspecified manner, "kill specialization".

He has failed to convince anyone at all of this, so far as I know.

In any case, it will have zero effect on you as a new empire dweller. Specialise away!

Would be a nice change if you even had a clue what you talk about :-/

    OP:
The thing is, CCP is lowering skill requirements for certain things - first batch came with Apocrypha and exploration.

Long training times and high skill requirements was what made you unique and valuable to the community by providing benefits of your expertise. You actualy had to make a decision and sacrify your performance in othe fields to train all those intensive skills.

Gdemami, you have accomplished something I have never seen before in any eve forum.

No, it isn't your rude and hostile demeanor... we've got plenty of that to go around.

It is the simple fact that you are able to create a unified consensus among all eve players.  Carebears, PvPers, pirates, industrialists, traders, alliance warriors, hi-sec mission runners, noobs, and 5 year vets....

Everyone agrees that you are pretty much full of crap.

Someone with more time than me should go back and list all of your posts explaining that every single patch/ change made to eve was going to DOOM the game.

    To the OP.

I have recently picked up the game in the 14 day trial and went ahead and added my sub.  I play other games and generally have only a night or two during the week to play for a couple of hours at most.

The best addition to this game I have seen since I tried it out at the release is the TRAINING QUE.  This allows you to set up a training schedule and place skills in it you want to train.  It also shows time lines and how your training is going to que up and what skills you now qualify for and the list goes on.  Nice addition to the game IMO.

My suggestion , at least it is what I am doing, is going through and doing all of the starter missinns regardless of what profession I think I want to play.  You can do this at the start ( and I strongly suggest ) you do this before making any changes to your stats.  I think right now all races start with the same stat capabilities and you get 2 free stat revamps before you have to wait 12 months for another free one.

By doing all of the initial chain quests with all of the tutorial pop ups on it has opened my eyes immensly to the possibilities in the game.  It also helps to understand more of the various pieces of the game on industry, market, skills, stats, ship design, functions, and other in game tools.  It gives you a taste of mining, of combat, of industry, of exploration and more I have not seen yet.

The reason I suggest this is in the past I have tried this game 2 times.  Once at the release and the other a couple of years back.  In both cases I went straight from character creation to flying half way accross the universe to join up with friends in a corp.  The problem was I was completely dependent upon them for any game play.  All of the stuff I had I got from the corp.  All of the questions I had had to go through the corp.  Anything I wanted to do depended upon the copr.  I was so far out I had no contacts or agents to work for.  All of the Agents I could find were extremely far away meaning I had to spend 30-45 minutes of travel ( through safe space ) to get back and forth.

I am enjoying learning this game for the first time.  With no corp at this point I do not feel the pressure to get up to speed quick ( time is real when it comes to training and getting the skills up to a level where you feel like you are a productive member of a corp is daunting).  I am having more fun learning at my own pace and not feeling a NEED to follow others around and beg to be able to help them ( was not begging really but, it felt that way ).  This time around I want to get an idea of what I want to do in game and be fairly self sufficient.  Then get into a copr with other players of a like mind and be able to bring something of value to the group.  Even though I only get about 10 hours in the game a week.  Still playing CO on the side.  :) /puts on flame retardant PJ's

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

    Thanks a lot.

IMHO In eve you will be grinding. You just grind isk instead of xp.

You also get to create your own content (via exploration, pvp, alliance building etc.)

Eve is definitely different from a stereotypical MMOs. I highly recommend giving it a shot. It's a mature game and fun to play.

Truest words ever spoken on this forum.

Do keep in mind though.. in order to enjoy eve you need to accept right out of the gate that people are going to try to trick you, scam you, or blow you up every chance they get.

In empire space (High security space where you start) this won't be such a big issue but you still need to keep your guard up.

You can't take things personally in eve.  The game is "gloves off" by nature and that's a big part of why it is great.  Other games always bored me pretty quickly because the endless fight against NPCs never really changes a great deal.  In eve you are fighting against other people that are smart and ruthless... and constantly adapting.  As a result the game never really gets stale.

You will lose ships.  The first few will hurt.  Dust yourself off and learn from your mistakes.  Keep your clone updated and keep on truckin.

Hi guys. I'm like the OP, I had some questions about the game as well, but I didn't want to start another thread.

I played Eve on and off over the past couple years. The last time I played was when they introduced the new ship graphics engine (about a year ago if I remember right). I just started a new 14 day trial account to check out the game again. Here are my questions:

    1. I see that they did away with the stat selection at the character creation screens. Is there a new system to selecting stats/builds? If not, does it matter what bloodlines we select now?

    2. Would my old character stats be affected by changes within the last year?

    3. What's the best way to start the game again? Mission running , mining, etc?

    4. Is there any new/updated guides for creating different character builds out there (i.e. Scouting, Stealth, PvP builds, etc)?

    5. Also I heard there was new graphics for the planets, but I did a little flying around last night and didn't see any amazing difference in the graphics. Is there something in the graphics settings I'm missing, or have turned off?

    6. Have there been any major changes in the game within again about one years time?

    Thanks Guys!

    1. I just started Eve myself for the first time but now I don't think it matters what race or bloodline you pick. You are allowed 2 remaps of your stats every year. So train your learning skills, get implants, and plan out your skills for the next 6 months or so using evemon then remap your stats.

    2. Stats just affect how fast the skills train. Well, I think, I have only been playing the game for 2 or 3 months.

    3. Mission running is a great resource of isk. Especially if you salvage. It only takes a few weeks to get to a battlecruiser and into level 3 missions and that is when the isk rewards start getting really nice. Mining gets efficient quickly too because it doesnt take a whole lot to get into a retriever (mining barge)

    4. I use battleclinic to research loadouts for different ships. then you can put the loadout into evemon or evehq to make a skill plan.

    5. The new planet graphics are to come out with the Dominion expansion which will be released early December. The screenshots of them look awesome.

    6. Although I am very new, if you played this game before apocryphia then you have missed out on wormholes!!! They are alot of fun, challenging, and rewarding.
