Is there crafting in WAR? If so, how is it?
My wife and I are looking around for a new MMO, and we want a game where it's possible to do multiple things (PvP, PvE, crafting, etc.) in case we get bored of one thing.

You can make either:
1. Potions.
2. Talismans.
That's the crafting in WAR as invented by Mark Jacobs, Supergenius.

And it's really, really horrible. I've never seen crafting mechanics in an mmo this bad before. It just seemed really half assed.
I didn't like talisman making, but I enjoyed Apothecary and Cultivation more than Alchemy and herbalism in WoW.
I don't know when you last played, but they have upgraded the systems a fair amount.

Yeah, last time I played was last Nov or Dec I believe. I was just really disappointed with the game. I should have known not to buy it when it came out when they up and said they were completely taking out all but 2 capitol cities and several classes.

I played for a month again back in September and there had definately been improvements in the system, but it was still utter crap
A witty saying proves nothing.

Cultivation isn't really crafting. It's just growing seeds in a pot of dirt and adding water, nutrient or whatever after so many seconds. There really isn't anything to it at all.
How it even passes as a "craft" is beyond me. It's like saying Taco Bell has meat in their food. Meat paste is more like it, lol.
Same for Butchering. It's not a "craft" and unless I'm wrong, pretty sure the OP is talking about making armor of different types, weapons, furniture, curios, gadgets or other generally crafted items you can keep or sell.
Pots count as does Talisman but everything else is WAR is just gathering type stuff in other games, or a prep stage for a real craft in another game, so there are only two craftable things in WAR; potions and jewelry (unless something was added after you can make since I left)

If an engaging, complex crafting system with multiple variables and random outcomes is what you're looking for, then WAR is definately NOT what you want. I'm just back after a year, and the game is a lot of fun, with massive improvements, and I'm having a good time with the casual play. But in WAR, if you aren't fighting, you're standing still. And unfortunately, I don't see anything looming on the horizon that is going to interest crafting socializers ...
For crafting go play Vanguard instead.
WAR crafting explained: it's a tool that you either have or not - not a full time job.
Gathering Skills
Cultivation: growing seeds into plants that can be used in Apothecary
Butchering: butchering animal mobs into ingredients that are used in Apothecary and Talisman Making
Scavenging: scavenging humanoid mobs and player corpses into ingredients that are used in Talisman Making
Salvaging: salvaging magic items into ingredients that are used in Talisman Making
Crafting Skills
Talisman Making: Making talismans that can be slotted into items
Apothecary: Making potions and dyes.
If you want to call it crafting then read the previous post. They are correct. Unfortunately the Development of the Game was to focused on PVP and even with all that focus in developing their PVP scenerios, battle arena style areas, etc. They lost in the end because the PVP is virtually meaningless.
I just came back for a month to play the new upgrade and so far the change has not made any significant difference. I will play to tier 3 and decide then whether a 2nd month is worth it, But do not sign up for this game if you like crafting. This is not the game for you LOL, or if your a bling collector. There is no bling to collect here.

That's right I like bows and arrows.
I thought this was another sarcastic post... But then I saw you asked a very good question.
My answer is this, there is nothing in WAR that you can't do better in any other MMO. That said the only strongest point to WAR is PvP and it is limited to Tier 1&2. If you're looking for a game to play for 1-3 months go ahead you might have some fun.
Otherwise: Vanguard, WoW, EQ2, CoH, Eve, AoC, Aion are mmo that have multiple things to do. Mileage may vary but in any case any of those games have way better elements.
The crafting is pretty poor and limited. I expected something great due to all the hype on crafting they were putting out there before release. If it was really going to be as poor as it is then why did they even bother talking about it? We would of been better off thinking there was no crafting and pleasantly suprised to see that there is a little bit. They talked it up like it was going to change the way crafting is done in MMOs from here forth lol.
I maxed out potions very early back when I played and then realized that there was a big disconnect between the gameplay, crafting, and economy.
