The MMO genre deserves to die IMO.

heremypetheremypet Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 528

Now with Blizzard jumping on the RMT bandwagon, RMT will spread like a virus.  As if it wasn't already bad enough considering how 99% of the MMOs out there are failures or are just plain boring.

I feel as though I've wasted a part of my life by following this genre.  Now RMT will probably wind up inevitably infecting single player console and PC titles as well.  In a sick sort of irony I feel as though I have somehow helped to cause the destruction of gaming by getting into EQ and MMOs in the first place.  If EQ had never taken off I might be playing an enjoyable match of Warcraft 4 right now from a company named Blizzard who is still honorable, instead of wasting time waiting for the industry to get its head out of its rear.

But who knows maybe they will stop with vanity pets you think? lol

Anyone know any good flash game sites?

    I somewhat agree.

But there is a hope amongst the darkness of these remains.

    What Square-Enix calls..

    Final Fantasy XIV.

It could be a total disaster of a game, having no strong game design for community and all the other qualities of a good MMORPG, or It could turn out to be a great game.

i gotta say, i agree...but for more reasons than that.

this genre used to be awesome. the lack of innovation has seriously crippled it.

not to be all doom and gloom though, because i think it WILL die but it will uh rise from the ashes like a phoenix and make a comeback...or some shit.

RMT is already infecting single player console games. Look at $ony and M$, they charge a ridiculous amount of money for things that should already be in the game. Of course all the publishers of these games are to blame also. The gaming world is becoming a sad place, and for me, it's almost dead.

It's just sad that players sit by and let this happen. It's easy to vote with your wallet, but for some reason, people just need that shiny object and continue to pay for stupid shit. Now that I think of it, it's the players who deserve most of the blame. They're really the ones letting this happen.

Single player games will soon going to be RMT too!

All I can say to this is do not support a company with a business model or practices that you do not like.  You currently still have choices, exert them.

RMT does not have to be the death of MMO gaming. Sure, depending on how its implemented it can be, but benign changes like what Blizzard is doing is hardly the end of the genre.

EVE has a form of built in RMT, and it hasn't hurt the game a bit.

The answer to your dilema is simple if you want the mmo genre to die for you stay off of mmo message boards news and don't buy the games.  MMO's are not so mainstream that you can't avoid them my subscription of Game Informer usually has no more than a page or two of mmo news so it isn't as if you still can't play video games.

There are problems with mmos sure RMT being one of them in my opinion but why do you feel that someone else should be denied there entertainment because it is something you don't like?  I think lot's of games are technically unsound but if people are willing to sub and enjoy themselves why would I not want to see them able to it's not like we are talking about drinking and driving or smoking crack they're video games.  Again I agree some games are boring even some I've tried but why and how does that effct me or you any differently than any other game you bought for a console that you wound up not liking?

I'm not willing either to concede to most naysayers the often used arguments that after playing a game for six months they realize it sucks and are now angry and feeling duped.  The first month for every mmo is free so you only buy the game if you play longer than that it just turns out to be a game with little replay value but many mmo players seem to need to find a reason and validate hatred towards companies for failing to hook them.

For all the console games relased in a year I may like four or five and that's counting games I buy every year like Madden,NBA2K or SVR and often times I get a game only to find I don't like it *shrug* move on I don't try to make the company the devil like some have done with WAR or try to turn them into liars and so on.

Really if you feel this way killing mmo's should be nothing too difficult as there is nothing mainstream about them they are very easy to avoid.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I hate F2P games with a focus on RMT, and I think subscription games are always the better choice.

but tbh, it's the games I don't like, the payment methods don't coincide with that.  Personally, I prefer RMT to subscription.  Subscription makes me pay to play the game, RMT gives me the choice.  How does this ruin the genre again?

I'm pretty sure lack of innovation will lead to a downfall of MMOs, not a change in payment methods.

BTW RMT exists in every medium, TV is the best correlation.  Sure you have a subscription fee, but what about pay per view.  And then there is renting movies.  What about Amusement parks, you pay to get in to ride the rides, but you have to buy food and drink and other arcade style games.  And going out to the movies? one price for the movie, then added popcorn and soda.

How is this something new and crippling?

MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift
    Willing to try anything new

Exactly. People have choices out there still. Though I admit, the mmo genre is going downhill fast with this rmt nonsense. You either charge a sub fee or use the rmt model. Using both is way too greedy for my taste. I just hope The Old Repubilc will not use a sub+rmt mode or else I won't be playing that either.

    LOL .. so?

If you can, live with RMT. If not, leave gaming. The market is big & growing so I doubt much will change if you leave. It is a free world. You don't have to play games.

I gotta agree at this stage the mmo genre has turned sour complete lack of regulation in standards is to blame in my opinion. Releasing half ass unfinished buggy game's , Terrible customer service (looking at you funcom / Ncsoft) Now this monthly fee + RMT its a total farce i stopped playing mmo's all together now it's a waste of money the companies have gotten so greedy and dishonest and seem to think they have the right to rip us off sick of it and im done it i hope the genre die's because it deserve's to.

I blame all the people who steal games of off torrents, companies gotta recoup that money some how.

stupid ignorant thieves ruining things for everyone.

Agreed. No regulation means they can do whatever they want and get away with it if people buy into the idea. People need to remember that as customers they have the final say. If they do not want the sub+rmt then boycott it. DO NOT buy their games and canel their subscriptions to send a message across to developers. We are not walking ATM machines to feed devlopers pockets 24/7.

  • Have you ever considered visiting a doctor about your OCD?  Seriously, you people make me laugh.  It's really not that big of a deal.

However, look at things on the bright side.  If every mmo starts using rmt, then there *will* be a market segment (admittedly small, but a decent sized segment none the less) of people looking for a "pure" game.  You might actually get a developer interested in making a game for your segment.

I think the moral of this thread is Change is Automatically Evil and that we should reject it out of hand rather than carefully weighing the pros and cons of what may merely be a different style of paying for services rendered.

Since we're usually on the same page in regards to our thoughts on games, I'm gonna go easy on you.  :)  The fact of the matter is that every game I've *really* played has been 1)  successful and 2) rmt infested.  In my book, the lack of rmt usually points to a poor game.  The numbers simply don't lie.  You guys against rmt are an extreme minority.  When you quit mmos because of rmt you are but the slightest drop in the bucket.  All the other people who either participate in rmt or don't really give a darn will still be there paying the bills.  Sorry.

Ummm.... in the West, RMT games fail pretty hard. They are usually only successful with kids who just want the F2P aspect of most RMT games.

Except in EVE's case. EVE's system is pure RMT, but it's done in a way that really works with the way the game is designed.
