    please dude.

Are you serious? A "real" opinion, is what everyone presents.  An opinion can be different than your own and be "real". Maybe you do not see as many opinions like yours about AOC, because the game has improved. At launch just like any game there is bound to be outcry. Because a game is not what a person thought, or was lead to believe it was. You do not have that problem anymore with AOC as people (lots of people) have played it.

People have a clear picture of what to expect, in that case there is bound to be less disappointment. Which leads to less rage quitting, which leaves less negative chatter. It is a clear cut trickle down effect.

I also find a poster with a history such as yours, bringing up viral marketing to be hilarious. The O.P. has a clear non biased posting history, in regard to the purpose of this website (discussing the MMO genre). As do many posters who post in this section, and here you are with a clear agenda (one only needs to glance at your history to see that) making accusations toward others. Just remember everytime you point a finger there are three pointing right back at you.

    A spade is a spade.

AoC sucks....you can  go on about improvements all you want. (FC should get a medal because the game doesn't crash every 5 minutes?--yeah it a real Masterpiece). Yes AoC is the worst MMO on the market---your're right...that is my stand. Because it's the truth. Not hard to carry that bias.

This game is built around a 1999 game engine-and the client can't handle al that pretty artwork. The game has de evolved in the last year, and Craig Morrison should be fired with extreme prejudice. Anything good this game has to offer is pretty broken.Defend this pos all you like, but at least the population has spoken...and keeps speaking by leaving. You won't fool many people with this BS about  AoC being worth anyone's time.

If you like this game (which most gamers don't), then perhaps your taste in gaming should receive a reality check. Giving this title an -A is the equivalent of saying the movie. "Gigli," Should have been nominated for an Academy Award.

    it's just that lame.

If you base the quality of the game on population then you are a retard.

EQ2 and EQ have a low population yet the games are fantastic even today. Giving these theoretical statistics and "everyone" statements create pointless arguments.]

As I said before you really don't understand how a review works.

I have enough sense to understand that if a you give a broken game like AoC an -A, then Im not sure what you give the games that actually deserve this mark.

AoC should not be given anything better than an "E" until it's fixed. That means sieges, crafting, the economy., itemization, stamina..etc.

If it was a true "-A," people would be playing the tits off AoC---thats a fact. A fact that is very unfulfilled in Hyboria. Perhaps they should have used the IP for "The Day The Earth Stood Still," that would have brought the feeling of no people to light.

Btw a good functional game, and a broken game is not a matter of opinion--like the Viral Marketers wish it was..

Sorry to break the news to you.

  • ericbelserericbelser Member Posts: 783

LIke all "reviews" it is a totally subjective bunch of opinion, nothing more; because there is no "objective" standard to any of the categories.

I gave AoC a try (twice now even) and I'd rate it more like a C- on graphics/appearance, D on gameplay and F on company (But I'll admit that last one is mostly because I hate FunCom), and a D+ or so overall at best...but that's just another worthless opinion...

BTW I *LOATHE* FunCom and even I will admit AoC is a functional game...a crappy one with lots of things I don't like/unresolved issues...but it's more playable than say Anarchy Online was this far after launch lol :)

All the major games out now have free trials...stop looking for answers from us forum warriors and just try them...a bit of time on a free download won't hurt much....

All that matters is if it's for the O.P. or not. What most gamers like or you or I like is in no way relative to that. Would I give AOC an A-, no I wouldn't. I wouldn't give a single game on the market an A-. The o.p. feels differently and I see no problem with that. Why you do is beyond me, and I am sure most others. Opinions are supposed to be subjective, and the presenter should know that.
Maybe you misunderstand the fact I don't play AOC, and yet still don't feel it's as bad as you and some others represent it is. Say AOc sucks all you want it doesn't make it so for others.

    Too me,

Anyone who spent any time gaming knows that AoC needs alot of work to really become acceptable to most people's standards.

If someone is giving this pos an -A---yeah .... it's a FLAT-OUT lie. Not an opinion.

    period.

It's sounds like you know this. If it was truly subjective (ie What the OP's favorite colour is) Id let it slide. If AoC was a "finished" game--i'd let it slide. However we know this is not the case. The game is in it's worst state ever. The game...right now...is imploding. Anybody can spend 2 minutes on either the US or EU side of their general forums to figure that out. Does that sound like what happens in games rated "-A"?

I will never just sit idle while people literally try to trick some 14 year old kid into wasting 70 hours of his life for him to figure out this game sucks because its fundamentally broken and as it appears beyond repair. He's probably expects to get an honest opinion (and he will if he listens to the right people).and frankly "-A " is not an accurate representation on "today's" AoC.

you know it.... I know it.....and almost everyone reading this knows it too (even if they say they don't).

But yes...I will call people's Bullshit ...if that's what you are saying.

Seeing the almost complete lack of grasping the concept of an opinion by some of these posts sure does explain a lot about these forums.

Its an opinion unless you can measure it with proven scientific methods. Subscription numbers, games sold, and polygon count do not fall into this category, nor does the opinion of you and your butt buddies.

Anyway, you gave some more OPINIONS not supported by facts, nor you tried to explain the opinions (something the OP did btw). Aion is shit - that is my opinion. But I don't have nor the time nor the will to write long essays on game I don't like. SO I STAY OFF THE GAME.

Put it out (and finally "save" the little kids) or get the fuck out. Merely saying the game is worst than it ever was is just a stupid statement from a stupid old man. So the game is worst than it was at launch?

Poor, poor Blackie and his endless crusade, tirelessly showing the people playing AoC the error of their ways, preaching to the AoC gamers trying to make them understand that they dont really enjoy the game they play because it is not possible to enjoy such a broken fail game. All of you AoC players, how you dare enjoying that terrible game, hasn't Blackie taught you about all of its problems and faults for months? Come on, listen to the poor guy, he is trying to save you, all of you. Stop playing AoC, for Blackie's sake. Don't you have any pity for our well meaning preacher? Can you imagine the amount of time he has spent during the past months trying to show you the error of your ways?

Don't be harsh to him, these forums won't be the same without Blackie if he leaves. Blackie is part of the landscape of these forums. If you drive him away you will end up missing him.

Come on Blackie, tell us again about AoC and its terrible, oh so terrible faults...

Are you really trying to lure people into AoC?

It's not going to work. The game and the lore is for the niche only. How else you can explain the fact that Conan isn't popular anywhere?

Sure, there's movies made and comics drawn. It's still not popular.

It's the combination of piss poor dev/publisher, weak lore and crappy software that turns people away.

So, I guess I'm trying to say your review (it was well written, you can have that) is in the line with the Funcom continuance. True enough to tie the lies together.

What are you talking about? The conan books are some of the most popular novels ever written in the genre. The game might have sucked but the books and movies are vastly popular. Are you a Trekkie or something?

  • finaticdfinaticd Member Posts: 843

Just like at launch AOC can get good reviews with an inferior product? By inferior I mean it doesn't hold a candle to most other MMOs.  However, just like release the players are once again leaving in droves do to how bad the game is and how lacking it is.

Server populations are not crashing today because of anything that happened at launch, so few people stayed so that the ones who did must have been able to tough it out in hope of something that never came or idk.

The game has much less content, the PvP is lame and pointless, the pve is very generic. patches and new stuff is few and far ebtween. after a year long beta test the players have to wait *SPOILER* they are not waiting, on the expansion for any hope at enough new stuff to occupy a casual for more than a week. This game is a marketing campaign nothing else.

Funcom has reviewed all of its assets relevant for
impairment testing. This process has led to
recognition of an impairment loss of around
3,1 MUSD for Age of Conan due to a decrease in
numbers of subscribers for the game. Funcom Q4 10 report.

    Agenda?

Hey man listen, the game is and always has been Funcom's to win or lose. Nothing  negative I can say can possibly change that. The reverse is true too.

My last thread-still on this page has been up for quite a while and only has about 3100 hits. That isn't even close to the number that will make or break AoC. That number is in the 100,000's.

If I had an agenda--trust me I'd strive for a greater audience.

The ball is 100% in Funcom's hands to either carry....or drop. Always has been and always will be.

What are you smokin'?  Some niche, around the world, the Conan IP (Intellectual Property) is stronger than Lord of the Rings. Some would argue as strong as (or stronger than) Star Wars and Star Trek.  This is in part due to the fact that the IP owners do not have the promotional finesse of Roddenbury or Lucas.  If not for the current limitations imposed by the IP owners, there would be even more available media for Conan fans than I am about to share below.

I will admit the Age of Conan MMORPG had some problems at launch.  They did not deliver on what everyone expected.  Look at every other MMORPG, including WoW, and you will see the same thing.  Everyone dropped the ball on a much anticipated feature.  Many take over a year to get their feet on the ground.  This is the norm; we as players are difficult to please and we expect results yesterday.  Developers of any game have a very difficult job, and I give ALL of them the credit for getting as far as they have with the many games on the market.  Well Done, Ladies and Gentlemen!!!  Age of Conan is an awesome game RIGHT NOW, on par with any other game on the market. I have not yet reached the end of the content; there are three nation-states to explore with a fourth on the way soon.  Many new dungeons have been added in the last year and a half.  Problems in the release have be corrected with repairs and enhancements to all the critical MMORPG systems that we had expected at launch.  The music is GREAT, and the new music for Khitai is already grabbing serious positive reviews.

This is not the first Conan-related game either.  Seven games have been built off of this IP over the years, including a recent popular version on XBOX 360.  A version of a Conan game has been available on nearly every major gaming platform since Commodore 64.

Conan is the most popular IP in history.  It is not popular to you, perhaps?  There are hundreds of books, most of which have been reprinted many times in many languages.  It has been around since the 1930s, a lot longer than Warcraft, and people still collect original stories and Pastiches (Conan stories by other authors).  Folks hold on to their copies, and do not sell them back to used-book stores very often; I know, because I collect them.  Some printings are so rare that they are over hundreds of dollars.  Every couple of years, some publishing house releases a new Omnibus of Howard stories for the current reader population. In addition, there are twelve novels written directly about the Age of Conan game universe.  These are also very difficult to acquire, since they sell out immediately on every printing.

There have been four movies that evolved off this franchise (though not canon by lore): Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Red Sonya, and Kull the Conqueror.  A King Conan movie was tabled when Arnold became the Govenator.  Another Conan movie from a new production house is due out in 2010 that is supposed to be more in-line with the original REH Stories.  In late Dec, we have another character from Robert E. Howard gracing the franchise: Soloman Kane.  Everytime a Howard character hits the screen, there is a resurgent interest in Conan, who remains the most popular of all Howards characters.  We have three TV series: two animated and one live action (Conan the Adventure[animated], Conan and the Young Warriors[animated], and Conan: The Adventure [live-action]); albeit a little cheesy in some cases, I have not seen a Warcraft movie or TV series, yet.  An animated feature film, called "Conan: Red Nails", is also in production and due out soon.

Conan has been in print in Comic Book form nearly non-stop, since 1970.  There are bound collections of Conan the Barbarian and The Savage Sword of Conan on the shelves at nearly every major bookseller.  There are Dark Horse Comics adaptations of the original Howard stories in graphic novel format on the same shelves.  I have many original copies of these comics from when I was a child.

For those of us who are old-school pen and paper gamers, TSR published a game and modules for both D&D and AD&D in 1984 and 1985.  GURPS produced a Conan RPG. and Mongoose has the latest release (Conan the Roleplaying Game) in 2004 with many supplements.  There is a Conan boardgame (2009) and a Collectable Card Game (2006).  A play-by-mail game called Hyborian Wars has been around for years, if not decades.

For those staunch Democrats among us, President Barrack Obama collects Conan the Barbarian comic books and is a big fan of the character.

ALL CONAN-Haters are hereby DISMISSED.  Know what you are talking about before spewing your venom.

Go read the home page by subbers---thats way nastier than I ve ever been.....and those are paying customers. (but not for long)

Ask them if this game is an  "A minus"

Don't you understand...the game is fundamentally broken...thats not an opinion.

Now you are denouncing my IP?  I seem to remember that is a real no-no around here. If you suspect something please go through the proper channels.

Just want to say this is an epic win hehe. Also, I want to thank you sir for the history lesson. It was a very interesting read. I also think AoC has become a great game and the lore is so rich compared to other games in the genre. Yes, it does have it's problems, but common. What game doesn't have any issues? Everybody has the right to thier own opinion but I don't think someone should blantently try to discredit someone just cause they don't agree with them. Would I give AoC an A? Probably not. More like B- or C+. I think that would fit better, but that doesn't change the fact that people are playing and enjoying the game. I'm 1 of them. Overall, this is a great, well thoughtout review.

Heya Blackwell,  Is there an MMO that your are currently playing and enjoy ?

I am trying to put your opinionated hatred of AoC in context with what you feel is a good MMO worth playing.
