I was just wondering if anyone has come out with a western style MMO, or a western hybrid mix (remember the TV show Firefly?) MMO? I just checked Frontier 1898 or whatever it is and their webpage still hasn't been updated, and they're still looking for an investor.
And... if there's someone out there with the ability to make an MMO, and has the capital, I have the ideas
Comments
I think the problem is that there are so many ideas and not enough capital. That's why developers are tending to stick to generic/accepted gaming formulas. Money is the reason our games aren't getting better. Innovation doesn't sell these days.
Also, I don't know of any Old West mmorpgs. I think there was one called Bang! Howdy or something along those lines.
The rights to a Firefly MMO are currently owned and an MMO has been announced. No progress has been announced however.
Also, the creator of Pernica, if he could get a modeler and not get sued, would personally make a Firefly MMO. He's talked about wanting to. He's a huge Firefly fan. =]

Okay... I did a little googleing and this is what I found about a Firefly MMO.
Wired reported in December '06 that a company called Multiverse was going to announce purchasing the licence of Firefly to make an MMO.
"Multiverse, maker of a free MMO-creation platform, plans to announce Friday morning that it's struck a deal with Fox Licensing to turn the show into an MMORPG in the fashion of Star Wars Galaxies or Eve Online."
In that same annoucement, Multiverse made it pretty clear that they were not a developer by saying "Bringing those environments and character types to life as an online game will be a challenge: Multiverse is not a game developer, but rather a platform provider whose product is still in beta. Instead of making the game itself, the company will hire a development team that will craft the virtual galaxy using Multiverse tools."
A few days later Michael Zenke gave his opinion on GameSetWatch.com
"Multiverse is going to be tackling the Firefly license, and making a Massively Multiplayer game."
But it was certainly a ranting opinion as he said, "There's going to be too much fightin'. I can tell you right now, sure as can be, there will be too much fighting to get the tone right for the Firefly universe." He followed that up with "While I think there's going to be too much fighting, on the other hand I don't think there's going to be enough ... anything else." And this is something that I agree with and kinda made me happy, "In fact, if anything, the [Firefly Uni]'Verse is an even better setting for a crafting and entertaining system than Star Wars Galaxies."
Jon Wood from MMORPG.com had a few things to say.
"As you can imagine, the announcement spurred our members into action on our forums. Some are already anxiously awaiting this new incarnation of a favorite franchise, while others are undeniably skeptical of the game's possible success."
Fast forward to December '08 and Massively.com posts a blip that the probability of the Firefly MMO release at 5%.
"...we basically haven't heard another thing on the subject in the intervening years."
On Multiverse.net they make no mention of a Firefly MMO.
"Dozens of teams, from garage developers to Fortune 100 companies, are working with our technology. Here are some of the worlds that independent developers are building."
There's been little or no activity on the Multiverse.net FireFly Online forums, but there is some speculation that Multiverse may either finally have a developer they haven't announced, or are preparing to drop the license...
Did I miss anything?
Nope that's pretty much it.
Like I said, the creator of Pernica wants to make one but it wouldn't be licensed so he won't atm...

I've just posted a Western Game, check it out, it's called Howdy.
Totally uncalled for. Don't derail threads.

If I recall, the firefly mmo was put on permanent hold because of a buffy mmo being made.... i'll see if i can pull out the source...
[Edit: found it]

"You folks put out a number of interesting announcements this week, but the one many people were most drawn to was the news of new titles. You announced that you were pushing off the Firefly IP MMO, and it sounds like you are already in development on an MMO set in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer IP. Is that accurate?
Corey Bridges: That is accurate. We are already in development with Buffy. That's obviously different than when we announced the Firely arrangement. There, we hadn't begun work on it. Annoying as heck that we had to delay the Firefly game....."
In my opinion, the multiverse engine isn't good enough to do firefly justice. Nevertheless, I would love to see the Firefly IP be developed into an MMO. It has enough lore to get the ball rolling, but isn't constained by too much.

I'm looking for a Western that fits more along the lines of SWG Pre-NGE with a Western theme... Firefly would be the best of both worlds.
Sounds like it doesn't exist yet.
