I am a noob player EVE on a trial and still deciding if I want to upgrade. I'm leaning toward yes. Currently there are 26,000 players which is pretty good I guess. My concern is what will happen when Star Trek Online comes out. How many people will drop this for that. I do not know anything about Star Trek MMO nor will I be playing it at all in the future. I was just wondering.

All kidding aside, I seriously doubt much of any of Eve's player base will be hopping to a new game any time soon. This does not mean some Eve players won't try out STO, but there is no way there will be some sort of mass exodus. Eve provides a rich deep world unlike any game out there. With the exception of being set in space STO is nothing like this game. ( And my personal and yes somewhat unfair opinion of STO, is it won't be much like Star Trek either.)

Eve is an entirely different game than Star Trek will be. Just the simple fact that I've never heard any comments about how Star Treks economy will work pretty much supports my assumption. Eve may put you in a spaceship, but the game is largely a game of economics and politics.
Because of this, Eve probably has the most loyal, hardcore sub base of any MMO. Love it or hate it, it truly is in a class by itself.

Fear not friend unlike some on here who said STO will have some kind of effect on EVE I am fairly certain they will not, EVE online as I see it from my short trial time in game is a different beast from any other MMO on the market and I doubt that the features included or the build of STO will be similar enough to EVe to take many if any subs away.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

And this is the best way I've seen it put, without an actual interjection of opinion. EVE gives you an entirely different experience than what will STO. I don't think STO will really move anyone towards EVE either because as stated they are not the same type of MMO and what one looks for in STO is most likely not going to be a strong suit of EVE and vice versa.
I see potential for Cryptic to disappoint both myself and many others but I have more faith in them pulling off a fun mmo though I know there will be many unhappy no matter what. After having played a trial of EVE I have come to respect it more than any game I've tried but it isn't for me.

I doubt it will die but it would be foolish to not think that Eve will lose subscribers to STO. Yes it is, probably, a themepark and yes it will be casual. But I doubt every single player in Eve want hardcore and sandbox. Some might just want to play a space-sci-fi MMORPG and there arent many of those around. vendetta-online.com/ is the only other I know of.
Star Wars Galaxies, maybe you've heard of it? Yeah, I know most people would prefer to forget it.
There's another one on the horizon that's likely to make a bigger splash, TOR, however that's a ways down the road.
EVE will survive all of them since the new games will be providing a game play experience that is quite different and not likely to appeal to the same audience.

The only thing they have in common is that they are Sci-Fi Universes.
I find that I play Eve and WAR at the same time. I might drop WAR and play Star Trek, but it will be a very different game to Eve.
I also suspect that Star Trek is not going to be a game that blow everyone away. Players have become very fussy about new game - which by their nature of being new are not going to be bug-free, balance, or polished. Take WAR, a significantly better game now it is a year old (don't listen to the trolls on this site).
Of course, all games will take a hit while a few 100K players try out Star Trek; however, EVE is very well placed to weather the storm and is game this continues to grow in playerbase. Also, I think DUST might improve EVE a lot.

Depends on whether or not you get to be a space pirate mercenary (privateer) in STO, my guess is you get to start off as a redshirt or something so, no, this won't destroy EVE

After having beta'd CO and tried the free weekend, I definitely won't be touching STO til' there's a trial. It may not be the same team, but it was an EXECUTIVE decision to release CO half done.
STO is a BIG wildcard, and I'm not the gambling type. But crappy or great, I doubt it'll do much to Eve's numbers.
The reason why EVE has been succesful for so many years is the fact that it has depth and soul. No other sci-fi MMO can even land a glancing blow on EVE's hull.
STO will have limited appeal.
Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks.
Without having read the actual OP, just the topic i can instantly say "no Eve will not" and the OP doesnt really understand wha Eve is all about to make such a post....
I don't think Eve will be impacted by STO at all. Eve is a totally different type of game and appeals to a different crowd. STO will be a simple, casual game with very little depth and no soul.
I tend to agree. EvE appeals to a different kind of player base and from what I've seen STO borrows many concepts from EvE. What will probably happen is that some folks will move to STO but will come back to EvE. I've gone through this a number of times myself and every time I come back the game is better than when I left. One reason for this is that the developement team has stayed with the game continually tweaking, improving, and modifying such that its a well balanced, challenging MMO. There subscription numbers bear this out. It's one of the only games, if not the only game that has improved its subscription numbers every year since it began in 2003. When I started playing in 2003 it was common to see only 2,000 to 3,000 peeps on line. Now, on a slow day there are close to 30,000 and on busy ones well over 50,000. This is no fluke. It is the result of commitment on CCPs part to deliever the most immersing MMOs on the market today. Currentlly, they're working on an expansion that will allow players to walk around stations, set up stores, have private rooms etc. When that happens those folks who left to play STO will come back in addition to a whole new influx of players. They've done it numerous times over the last six years with other superhyped MMOs have been introduced, and STO will be no exception.

lol no. STO is going to fail hard.

STO is a BIG wildcard, and I'm not the gambling type. But crappy or great, I doubt it'll do much to Eve's numbers.
The only thing these two games have in common is they are both in space, I see no major empact on EVE's base from STO's launch.
The reason why EVE has been succesful for so many years is the fact that it has depth and soul. No other sci-fi MMO can even land a glancing blow on EVE's hull.

EVE may even win from STO. How? People that won't be that happy with STO may try that instead
The only time (I expect) EvE's subs might slip is when CCP's other game comes out.
So, the answer to the thread is a no.
This is comming from someone that has already decided to try out STO.
after watching the latest "combat" trailer of STO im confident EVE has nothing to fear from this generic mmo.
/nods
STO won't for sure, however I can see these 2 making a dent in EVE's subs if they are upto par.

I concur, those are much more worthy challengers to consider.
