Of course every game not yet released has the chance of being a failed project. The doom and gloom surrounding every game released or coming out, is indicative of a playerbase that is looking for something they will not find. People are chasing the dragon in other words.
Am I a trek fan ? Not in the slightest way, I do love sci-fi though. As well as enjoy a decent videogame now and then. I just do not see a single game making it in this climate, not to an extent that makes it feel massive. I also do not see very good communities coming in the future. Not with the attitude people show toward MMOs, its perfect (to their insane expectations), or fail.

Sir, you are correct. These people are nothing but trolls waiting to bash the next big thing. I admitted earlier in this thread that I too am NOT a trekkie, yet am still optimistic about this game. And what do I get for it? Nothing but a hammer to the head. Its depressing really to see people so easily ready to bash any game coming out. Honestly, I think thats why free to play games have been coming out more recently. Because there is no expectations for a free game. Developers dont want to waste billions of dollars on a game for a community such as mmorpg.com's to bash it to the ground and have it fail. Honestly sometimes, its what is said about a game that makes it fail, not so much its gameplay, dynamics, or graphics. Think Vanguard. No advertising and what do you get, two years later? a great game with a (exaggeration) 20 player community.

Its all about how we approach these games and if we keep bashing games before they come out, well, we will NEVER find that perfect game.

While I agree that the trolls get annoying, I think you give them too much credit. If this website had any influence on the MMORPG base, World of Warcraft would have died a long time ago and SWG pre-cu would be thriving. Since the opposite is true, I'd say the ability for this community to affect a game is zilch.

This game will succeed or fail based on it's own merits, not what the trolls or fanatics say. Just as it should be.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

Its not about effecting a change on a game. Its about looking at what a game offers and giving an opinion on if people will enjoy that or not.

Better example: Age of Conan. There was exactly one person on this website who fought like hell to defend that game, even becoming a staff member on this site so he could try to ban people who didn't agree with him. But trying to force his own opinions on everyone else didn't change the facts: the majority of gamers hated the game. AoC didn't fail because this community called it a failure, this community called it a failure because it was a failure.

I like how my argument, that which gets counter-argued, gets argued by some other arguer. Gotta love these forums. Whose gonna argue this post now? :-P

But looks like soon enough we'll find out whether its a good game or yet another failure on the MMORPG scrapheap.

A game without depth might not be a bad game till it grows old.  City of Heroes was fun for a few months.  That is good enough.  When I begin to feel running out of fun, I log out, or end sub.  No big deal.  Even the best games end someday, DAoC died somehow, to me.

Come to think of it, is it not fun that way?  You got new games to play for a while, and more games coming up, so that eventually when you feel bored or got attracted to a nicer game, you switch.  No need to look back after moving forward.

Good thing is, game sub is not marriage, you do not need a lawyer to drop it.

This is about a year earlier than I expected.  My wife has really been excited about it.  Me?  Not especially, but I'll try it out.

I've got a bad feeling about this....
