This game will be nothing more then a time sink like any other MMO. It will have no revolutionary ideas just like any other MMO to date. It will copy what has already been done.
For crying out loud if it's anything like it's predecessor spend 18 some hours trying to kill a boss(no joke). That's not only grinding but tedious. All the fancy GUI's, DX9000 graphics, and user bars in the world for any MMO can't hide the fact you are waiting to pay 15 bucks a month for crap.
Be better off going to play UO or WoW. Might be crap, but you don't have to wait a few years to play something you've already rinsed, washed, and repeated years beforehand.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
I never played FFXIV, but I have real doubts I will ever play a MMORPG designed from the ground up for a console. And hearing comments in this thread about lack of character control, and a "horrific interface" only deepens my conviction. But we'll see. I'll do some reading about the game when it is released.
Like I tell everyone: Never take the word of another poster as the truth when it comes to a game feature.
Dont even take my word for it but I will still give u my opinion.
FFXI was my first MMORPG so when I started playing it I had no other MMO to compare its movement and control against.
Was it a bit weird to control? Yes it was as much as any game's controls are when you first start using it.
The default settings were weird but there were options to change them to your liking. Anyone who could not "control" their character just did not give it enough time to get used to them or just did not care to tweek them to his liking.
After years of playing it, the whole system was second nature to me and most of the people playing the game (it did not take years to become second nature, but a few days)
after 3-4 years of playing FFXI I bought WoW because my brother played it and I will tell you the controls to me were different and new. Granted I got used to them rather quickly and I agree they are very smooth. I can see how someone who's first MMO was WoW would have a very off putting experience when they first pick up FFXI but let me tell you. Give it time and effort for a few days and u will think the controls were just fine and second nature to you too.

Its interesting to see how MMORPG.com is FULL of people like you, unhappy at everything and always between MMOs.
Yet another MMO that I will pass. This is more of the same, and it's going to be easier than the past FF MMO. This is a MMO developed for the masses. Now a shining brilliant game in the horizon is Secret World. Lookign forward to see how the 3 factions will work out. I am done with the 2-faction rehash.
Okay, from reading these posts I gather that a game company is a sell out if they make content that draws more customers and keeps the majority of the customers happy. A game is not worth a crap unless it is difficult to the point of being annoying, forces you into a corner with your character such as optimizing job combos, just so you can group without being called names. Forces you to spend hours and hours and hours just to feel like you accomplished something. Hmmm maybe I am a sheep, but I see nothing wrong with enjoying a game because it is a game and takes 2 months to max level and not a 5 year endurance marathon to gain 20 levels.
Not everyone enjoys the same type of game. Some people want a game to be difficult and to us that is fun. Over the past few years most mmo's that have been released have felt very similar to WoW and it's getting really boring.
Sometimes I get the feeling that the masses feel threatened by games that go in a new direction. Don't worry, nobody is going to take WoW away from you.

I'll get excited about FF14 if it's 1) Nothing like FF11, which sucks and 2) Not infested with fanboys raging about how terrible and evil World of Warcraft is.

I'm sure no ones gonna miss you. In fact one of the many reasons I liked FFXI was its ability to keep people like you away.

Does anyone know about the controls in the next one? I tried FFXI on my PC, and it seemed awesome. But I was told that the game plays much better when u have a console controller connected to ur PC. I could not afford one, and I simply could not get used to the controls/ Interface. Does anyone know if they plan on keeping the same keyboard layout? cause that was so confusing. having to use the numberpad to run around was weird, and when adjusting it to a laptop setting it still felt clunky. I have loved the FF series since I was a kid, and REALLY want to get into this MMO, I just have to have a simpler control scheme.
It's getting a PS3 release, probably first, so its controls would probably be optimized for a controller. I never had a problem tho' going wasd/mouse with FFXI and wasn't a personal fan of using a PS2 pad. I'd imagine it'll be similar, but I'm thinking a lot of the mechanics from XI will make it into the game.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
Err, sorry to go slightly off topic here but how do you even text chat in these console games? Do you have to to scroll/select each individual letter off an alphabet chart or what?
I really am quite ignorant about this. I've never owned a console.

All current home consoles support USB keyboards in some form. FFXI and PSO also used an additional quicktext menu for communication which also aided in cross language communication.
If I wasn't so put-off by the mixture of realistic graphics with very cartoonish races, I might be more inclined to pay attention to it....
I don't say this as an anti-anime dickhead, for the record; I like anime styles just fine. But having the graphics as realistic as they are when you have races that look like Jim Henson puppets, I'm uncomfortable.

That assumes you have any interest in Final Fantasy, grouping or the kind of crappy gameplay that the previous game had. I don't.

FFXI is one of the most successful MMO's of all time. It has held a steady 500k Subscriber base for SEVEN years. It was my first MMO love and I will be waiting for it more than any other game I've waited for, for the last seven years.
Believe it or not, what FFXI offered no longer exists in any MMO currently on the market. The two faction pvp/pvp model that WoW made popular is the norm. Whereas MMO's that entirely focus on pve, grouping, story, and a sense of community have gone by the wayside.
A lot of people long for the type of atmosphere and experience FFXI offered. My biggest hope is that we don't get immature transplants from the current MMO mainstream into FFXI. If the community that existed (and still exists) in FFXI is note recreated in FFXIV, that will be a BIG BIG loss.
Man if you think WoW's primary focus was on pvp, then you're completely out of the loop. It's a heavily (boringly so) pve focused game with a pvp distraction. Both fun games, but both also aren't bastions of innovation. If you're expecting something completely different with FFXIV you're looking way too high. If you're looking for polished content using modern concepts in mmorpgs, that's a more real goal.
I bet there will be a structured pvp element, faction competition, and raid raid raid prep grinding. Since that's the popular model.
I do have hope that Square will see the successes within FFXI, some of the new things in LotRO, and the unpolished diamond in the rough concepts of Warhammer and give a reasonably well crafted mmo to us.
That's Square's game plan with everything, and it's worked well.
WoW on release used to have a strong world PvP aspect, even on the normal servers. That's all gone now, but it is worth bearing in mind that WoW is a very different game now from what it was on release.
The funny thing is, the little innovation that SE puts in XIV is a -huge- innovation in MMO terms; that's how bad it's gotten these days. I mean, the fact that you can play all classes on one character seems to be something unique these days, which is pathetic.
There are older games that allowed this, such as SWG.
Squenix doesn't really innovate much, but they try their best to perfect what's there. It's a safe bet this game will be good, but it won't be world-shatteringly awesome.
It's also funny how some people link the offline FF's with the online ones. A truely ignorant folk around here indeed.
Even though offline FF's are not known for their innovativeness, in online gaming SE actually holds the torch of innovation.
For a simple reason, too; they don't do what players want. They create things based on their vision of the game- in good and bad.
If people ask for a simple fix/addition, SE creates a whole new event about it. Players ask more of something, SE makes a 180 and creates something completely different.
That's what I like about them, too (and that's why I don't find WoW that enjoyable).
(and before I'll be accused for being a 'fanboy'- read between the lines; SE isn't perfect developer, FFXI is in many aspects a bad game, and WoW is in many aspects better than it- so don't bother.)
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Iirc, SWG only allowed a set number of points to use for every character... it doesn't really work the same way in the slightest.

But you said being able to play all classes on one character was unique... just pointing it out, whether the systems are the same or not didn't seem to matter.

Actually UO did this as well- why the system has been forgotten since then is a mystery, but SE is bringing the sexy back once again. Reinventing?

The biggest thing I'd like is to be able to CUSTOMIZE controls...you know like every other game... than be FORCED to play it their way.

Huh, an innovative, fresh MMO? Sounds like something I'd love to see...but these damn final fantasy screenshots keep getting in the way!
Isn't XIV coming first on PC unlike XI?
