I played FFXI for two and a half years (on and off). I Loved it!
I played it for a year and a half on the PC using mouse and keyboard. When I came back to play it in 2007, I played it on the PC with an Xbox controller. I LOVED playing it with a controller.
There is no doubt I will be buying FFXIV. The question is, should I go PS3 or PC?
If I go PC:
1. I plan on buying a duplicate Radeon card and going Crossfire. I hope it supports crossfire. Suffice it to say, my computer will able to support the game on the highest settings on a 23" Samsung Monitor. (Net cost ~$150 more).
2. By playing on the PC I have the option of getting controller and using it, or the keyboard and mouse. It's pretty much ready to go. I'll be playing in my home office, on my office chair.
3. I can have ventrillo and internet handy to research or talk with friends as we quest.
If I go PS3:
1. I will be playing it on a 52" Samsung HD TV, comfortably on my couch. Conversely, it will be in the living room so I have to share my playtime with wife watching television, or anyone else watching television. When we have guests over, will not be able to play.
2. To play on PS3, I would also have to buy the keyboard. (Cost ~$80).
3. No ventrillo support for talking with friends as I play. Difficult to go offline and research stuff, or do other things that I would be able to do if using computer.
And No, getting both versions is way too expensive since I will need to buy PS3 Keyboard and a second graphics card, not to mention a Playstation controller for the PC along with the cost of buying the game twice (~250 - $300). At this point, it's one or the other.
Any suggestions?

Just FYI, ANY USB Keyboard will work with your PS3.
You don't have to buy the actual Sony PS3 Keyboard.
As for suggestions, I'd go PC and Controller all the way. Higher quality visuals, more precise control and all the benefits you mentioned above for outweigh any that come from playing on a console (imho).
I will eventually buy both but will get PC version first. Like the dude above side any usb wired/wireless keyborad/mouse will work on the PS3 just go to walmart and get a cheapo one. I hope it supports SLI/Crossfie aswell and hope it supports DX11. If it does support DX11 I will sell my 2 285's and get 2 300 series around the launch of FF14. Its hard to choose which on to get first but I chose PC first because I don't want to put alot of stress playing on my PS3. I know I will be playing the hell out of it when it first come out.
I played FFXI on PlayStation and absolutely loved it. I owned the PC version as well but never used it. You can't beat playing a great MMO on a 52" TV while lounging on a couch. I'm not a big fan of sitting in a chair staring at a monitor, but if you don't mind it, there are some obvious perks to playing on a PC, as you stated above.
So you wouldn't be able to use the computer that you wouldn't be occupying by not playing FFXIV on it for what reason? I don't know, it just seems someone who is putting too much thought into what medium they are going to play a game that is due out in a year isn't thinking fourth dimensionally ...
Anywho ... for me it breaks down like this.
Cost to upgrade PS3 to play FFXIV: Presumably nothing (if i need a mouse I might need to buy one)
Cost to upgrade PC to play FFXIV: Presumably more than nothing
The TV and the computer are in two separate rooms. For me to research and talk to friends while playing on the PS3 would be impracticable if I have to go to another room to use vent/internet.
As to your second point, cost is only an issue initially. I plan on getting both versions eventually, most likely a year after the game is released.
At this point, I'm leaning towards PC because I'm going to want to upgrade my PC to keep in line with the latest games. The office chair I use is pretty comfortable. And, I can play whenever I want without worrying about who needs to use the TV for their favorite show.
The only benefit I see on the PS3 is the big screen and "comfortable factor" that can get by playing on the couch.... though on the flipside, using a keyboard while on the couch would be more cumbersome than just lying back on my office chair while playing on the PC.
What a rediculous post.
Yes, you have awsome equipment to choose from in your household.
You and your ego should have fun playing the game.
Whos this guy...? Go back to pulling the heads off dolls bro...
"I play Tera for the gameplay"
Haha, thats fine, you can judge me for criticizing the OP. But do you think this simple question from the OP really needed as much bragging, including prices, to be an effective question?

I'm sorry you perceived my post as bragging. It wasn't intended that way. I just wanted to describe the situation so that people could give me their opinions based on the facts.
If I were to tell you it's ps3 vs. pc and my television is smaller than my monitor, everyone would say I should get the PC version. The size of the TV mattered because it adds to the plus factor of playing on the ps3.
imo if there is a game that comes out for both pc and console. i'd take console any day, everyone is on equal playing grounds.
I read that the game for PS3 and PC are gonna be the same server. (not sure thought might be something else)
If so wouldnt you beable to log into the game using 1 account either or. If so then buy the PS3 version first cause that is the one you have to buy activate your account and if you like download it on PC. Now you have both and you play what you like
but this will only work if the 2 versions are on the same server and you can use the 1 account for both versions.

Brilliant! Thank you.
One question though, how will I be able to download the PC version without paying for it? Will it allow me to log on to my FFXIV account with my PS3 created password and download it that way?
It I can get the best of both worlds by only buying the PS3 version, that would be great. But, I dont' know if that possible.
Also, FFXI had PS2 and PC on same server I believe.
Not sure how you came to the conclussion that this guy is using this post to pump his ego. If anything it is the opposite since he even says that he does not have the funds to buy the game for both platforms.
Brilliant! Thank you.

If you have the PS2 or 360 version of the current game do you still have to buy the PC version to play on your computer? If so then I would think it would be the same for the sequel.

I get you want to do those things while playing ... and it is hard to talk (not impossible with the right set up) to people, but as far as research ... good lord walk a few steps.
Either way ... psychology lesson for you today. When people ask for an opinion they already have their mind made up and are just looking for validation. Typically people are going to find someone who is going to give them the advice they want to hear so they can feel good about their decisions. Have you ever had a good friend that you always value his/her opinion and then one time the advice just seemed really wrong and you went against it? In that case you wanted to hear x, you expected to hear x, and you were taken back because you heard y. It happens. Rarely is anyone truly on the fence about something, they are already leaning one way or another. Studies have shown if you could really go either way on something you had no opinion going in and probably didn't really care to begin with.
Why bring this up? :
"I'm leaning towards PC because I'm going to want to upgrade my PC to keep in line with the latest games." ~ You
You already answered your own question ... wait until you realize you probably can hook your computer up to your TV and hook the sound into your home theater. All you need is a wireless mouse/keyboard that will go 25+ feet. Computer monitors are just TVs without coaxial or HDMI connections in the back ... Most HDTVs have a port for a computer now a days ...
When I started the thread I was unsure as to which one I should do. I leaned towards the PC only after reading people's responses.
Brilliant! Thank you.

Usually not sure for all MMOs they have the option to download the client.
so it wouldnt be hard to find the Client to download from either the main website or another when they do Open beta clients.

Honestly i'd just get the PC version and buy a Logitech Dual Action gamepad, which is bascally a ps2 controller rip off and use that to play it. I play FF11 that way, I use a controller for it even though its the pc version.
Brilliant! Thank you.

Hmmm.... third party source....

I did a little search on that and if you bought any of the console versions you can play it on the PC using the same account .

Likely if you access your account through the computer then you can download the Client from Playonline. But again not sure if they will do that cause they might want Max. sales.
But if it does play out that way get the PS3 version first and download the client later.
Sony online is getting the controller (through bluetooth) ready for DC universe. which that game will have the keyboard/mouse option for PS3 and the PS3 controller option for the PC. so with FF XIV control wise you would be ok either way you decide to go

But how did people get the PC copy of the game. Is it through SquareEnix using their account to download the version or through third party sources?
I'm sure you can play on both using the same account, the issue remains on whether I need to pay for the PC version one way or another.
If you reverse it, people that buy the PC version first would still need to buy the ps3 version to play on the console. I would think SquareEnix would make you buy the PC version even if you bought the PS3 version.
Just realized that a Client Version of the game is necessary. If they are providing Beta codes with FFXIII, they need to be able to provide the game via download to partake in the Beta.
This is only a problem if they open Beta to Japanese players and not North America and Europe.
Exactly this is what I planned to do. Buy the Ps3 version and make my account and find the ffxiv client for PC else where then I can log in with my account whenever I want to play on PC or ps3.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
My advice... drag your computer out to the living room. If you got a 52" HD television, I am guessing it has HDMI or Digital input slots where you can use your television as a monitor. Wireless keyboard + Xbox360 controller (or any other) and you got yourself the best of both worlds.
