Lots of valid points on this thread. EQ was an absolute time sink. While I'm very sentimental about my time spent there, I could never, ever find that kind of time to devote to any game right now. I had tons of free time on my hands back then, but as other people have pointed out, you grow up and life hands you lots of responsibilities and obligations.
I do enjoy PvE raiding, although it all gets old after a while mostly due to the rinse and repeat nature of it. A game definitely needs to provide various options to keep you entertained. I understand PvP is the new hot thing, and it certainly sells, but being a one-dimensional game isn't going to keep the coffers full for very long.
Any good company does research, and if you're smart, you cater to whatever brings you the most revenue. As someone else stated, raiding guilds make up a small percentage of gamers, while casual gamers make up the larger percentage. If I'm trying to run a successful long term business, I'm making sure that the larger percentage is satisfied.
I play WoW, and I lead a raiding guild. I quit before the WotLC expansion, and came back. Not surprisingly, I'm just about fed up with the game again, and I'm looking for something else. Personally, I just want a game with a fair balance of everything, and a mature community, like the ones found on EQ, EQ2, or Vanguard.
As for the OP's desire to find hardcore raiding, I don't think you'll ever find that again, and that's probably for the best. We already waste enough time online as it is.
