Let me first say that I do not consider myself as a fanboy of this game, nor of Funcom, nor of Norway ( ).
How is the game you ask? It is good. Not great, not superb, not bad - it is good. Some aspects are good some are still broken.
I have to admit though that my comments on the game might be a bit biased, for I do not see a single MMO alternative today I could sign to. So it comes to not chosing the best, but chosing the "lesser evil".
If you have never leveled a character in this game do so now. You won't regret it. The story is decent, sometimes even great (loved some of the comments, loved the entire ymir storyline), the exp flies like mad and the progression is seen - nothing frustrates me more than EXP bar not changing a bit after few hundreds of mobs. Luckily, this is not the case here.
PVP is still great. This is the first game I played in which a good PVPer can get the satisfaction he deserves. Nothing better for ego than at lvl 60 and in green gear killing 80s.
Minis still bore the hell out of me (played few thousands back in the days) and it is definately time for some modes to be implemented. Sieges still lag like hell (or so I heard), and the raids are more or less on farm status. It is clear - game is still not cut out to be great. Game still has little to offer in terms of endgame and you WILL eventually get bored of the content it has to offer. There is 1.06 and expansion on the horizon and that might fix this.
Lag and performance issues. I did get booted out yesterday in the evening due to HIGH ping -4000ms, server side. But untill than I got 0 disconnects, 0 crashes and I play on max settings with dx 10 with something that would be called medium pc today.
Untill than, if you are disapointed by other MMO's like I am, pay 5 bucks and get into amazing storyline, great graphics and great pvp. Maybe, when you reach 80 the above content is being implemented if not - what the hell. You will pay like max 30 euros for few months of fun. Unless you can pick another MMO at the time being. Than by all means, go for it. I don't see anything that would be even remotely fun. So I have fun in AoC. Probly first MMO that made me read the lines and follow the story. I think that alone justifies the purchase (IMHO)
EDIT: This is NOT a review, nor it tries to be one. It is just an opinion on game.
Comments
I like what you have to say. It doesn't sound biased, and its true. There are no other MMOs out there for me right now other than Vanguard, but the lack of support that game receives is enough to drive me away.
With the expansion and 1.06 bringing in a TON of new endgame content, I don't think we have anything to worry about content-wise for a while. Not only that, but the atmosphere in this game is just insane. I especially love the Cimmeria zones.

PvP is great if you are a Demo or a Necro. It's also great if you can find a match with a melee class when you're playing one. Sadly that doesn't happen very often now. I really hope that there will be a relatively quick adjustment to stamina vs mana issue in the game. The same problem has been around since 1.05 and it's getting more and more game breaking to the PvP playerbase.
Basically if you want to prosper in AoC, do not go for the "Heads will roll" -theme, just make a caster class and steamroll your way to victory.
Im considering picking this up since Aion has become so tedious. What server would you recommend (EU)? Are there end-game PvE focused guilds or is this another mass PvP game? Also, Ive read about the imbalance between casters and melee, how do Rangers fare?
Thanks,
Xeno.
I don't know about EU servers, but Rangers are insanely powerful. There is a lot of PVE too

ya, the sad thing is, I LOOKED for anothe game to play ....
Coudln't find one. I even poted in MMORPG pub forum.
People suggested Guild Wards, but meh ....
I can't wait for the next "good and proffesional" MMORPG because playing a broken game for lack of a better one is sad.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.
Well the servers to consider are Fury (PVP), Crom (PVE) and Aquilonia (RP-PVP). Depends whaat suits you. And yes there are high lvl guilds who do PVE runs also
As for imbalance - it is bad, but not that bad to point it out as game breaker. You simply do not engage demos and necros ... if you are afraid of little death. I charge lvl 80 tosses though :P
Thanks for the replies, I'm gona roll a ranger on Crom. From wht ive read in the official forums the community seems very mature, and the game it self looks awesome Duno how ppl can still be judging it on launch over a year after release. I'll make aure to tell my Aion friends to give it a try when theyre bored of the two whole dungeons available at end-game.
I actually think AoC a pretty good fantasy mmorpg game to play casually right now, since it has great graphics and is a pretty good story-driven game with a good free-play and sub deal right now. More than that, though, it is probably best waiting for the expansion pack to come along as the end-game content will not keep you going for long if you play the game more than casually right now. The game is very instanced so that is worth bearing in mind if players don't enjoy that sort of thing.
I am a pretty casual player these days, craving more content, but the game sits well with others I play and others I sub too.
I think patch 1.06 will instill more longevity. But they really need a crafting overhaul to accomplish this aim better imo.
