Never played DAoC, L2 was already a bot fest in closed beta, and EVE Online is about as exciting as filling out a tax return. I'm not exactly sure what the OP is driving at, but I suspect much of it comes from playing the same genre for 10+ years. Scapegoating WoW is a poor substitute for accepting some personal responsibility. Guess what folks? It's unlikely you'll EVER re-experience the same wonder and charm you had in your first exposure to an MMORPG. You're only a virgin once.
no mmo market is not doomed. one mmo i bet that does really well star wars:TOR. and i'll be honest theres few mmo's after WoW that i like. very slowly i see mmo's going there own way .
If not for WoW you would have a lot less players playing the genre and a lot less games coming out. Perhaps you think that is a good thing but it would be a niche market. WoW brought mmo's to the mainstream.
Uhm....precisely why the genre is destroyed? You make mainstream sound like its a great thing.
to show the carebear....come to anything but null sec and get me...
Empire wardecs... Fooling you with the CONCORD rules in empire. I'd find a way to kill you if I wanted to. You're not safe anywere. EVE is the cruelest game to start at. I could even fuck you over in Jita and you wouldn't even know wtf happend to you!
EQ is the cruelest game to start at, on a PvP server. EVE is carebear, you can only kill players in certain zones.
This is true - it's really hard to kill someone who is docked in a station.
Anywhere in space, of course, they're easily killed.

Yes, because imagine how much more fun life would be if things like graphical user interfaces, mouse support, or even the internet itself never went "mainstream".
Carebear game EVE with hand holding tutorials and thousands of missions ...
Y'know, I've seen EVE described a thousand ways over the past 7 or so years, but I must say that is the first time I've heard EVE describe that way.
What he means is that he played it in a carebear way. He stayed in the safest parts of hi-sec and did nothing but grind missions, because the game doesn't make you do anything else. He lacks the initiative or imagination to do anything except grind missions, so naturally that's all he found. And actually there's only a few dozen missions. He just did them thousands of times. Because he's "hardcore". A hardcore carebear who thinks that gaining money, items and xp are all there is to an MMORPG.
Meanwhile I participated in 34 kills this afternoon/evening. I even had a crack at a Titan (if only we'd had a couple more Interdictors...)

That's why I'm still with my first love, faithful and true.
Not like all you dirty sluts, spreading for every smooth-talking new MMO in town.

High doubtful. But yes you might be able to gank me and then die...but I would lose a frigate or shuttle and you would lose a cruiser or better, but if I was in anything better than that you would be blown out of space before you could destroy me by CONCORD.
It is a question of Blizzard actually and the way they rake in 1.2 Billion dollars each year. Open mind .... The GAP in playing options between WOW2009 and any new newbee is already big. Have a look at what is coming in patch 3.3 (cross server content) and Cataclysm (ladder based BG competition and realm based guild leveling in PvE and PVP and new open world PvP zones).... And the GAP of upcoming playing options between what Blizzard offers and the rest .....in 24/7 group play is unsurmountable. ------ I guess the next step will be cross server economics and cross server "phasing". Probably in their new MMO. Blizzard is at the brink of solving the KNOWN population limitations of realm based MMORPG's with this. So UNLESS you want drastically change the definitions on MMO play, I don't think we even saw the beginnings....
Bleh
The solution to KNOWN population limitations was solved in 2003.
Don't make your game realm based.
Even Champions figured that crap out and they're obviously not the cream of the Dev crop.
Wow is just jumping through flaming hoops trying to find an easy fix for a cheap design decision.
If they had put in the effort to create a single server solution and seperated the factions into three sides they wouldn't be doing what they are.
But personally I'd like to see Wow crash and burn so MMO development could start working it's way back to a functional non-lopsided competition. As it is, if a MMO launches and isn't an immediate Wow level success the producers drop it like a steaming glass of guano and put all the resources into the next project. So none of our hopeful little turds get a proper polish. They just get a flush.
If EVE had released in the industry we have today it would have been shut down in a few months, but because it had a chance to grow and refine it's become a success.
I really feel for these contemporary developers.
Wow didn't mainstream the MMO industry. Wow mainstreamed Wow and our niche industry is taking a hell of a beating for it.

Are forums doomed to be filled with "Are the MMORPGs doomed since WoW was released?" threads since WoW was released?
I mean seriously how often can this topic be posted. Clearly a lot of the old school MMOers (myself included) prefer more intricate and detailed games that require more time to learn and to do well at. But just as clearly there are millions of people who want the WoW style game as well. Let's accept that fact and move on.

- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?

Remember the era of the boyband, bubblegum pop craze? When something becomes a massive hit, everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Don't blame Blizzard, don't blame WoW... blame success, and the greedy assholes who follow it.
