But do not let people fool you that say that Melee is better, cause it isn't, it only is better if people might have spend their AP wrong, or not wearing the right armor, perhaps they handle the wrong type of weapon, or they didn't buy or used any skillbooks..
Melee is better at PvE. Your beefy, you kill very fast, you can carry more loot, and you don't use tons of resources keeping yourself in ammo.
If you try and play a ranged class but still are going into close combat reach then sure Melee at close combat is better, thing is often mobs or creature's don't even have the time to get to me to do damage, obvious depending the range and if I am not attacked from several sides.
Like I said it all depends on how you develop your character, as knowing them will make you kill fast regardless if it's range or melee.
If I go out and explore the lands I make sure I have as little possible with me, having my craft kits in my horse saddle, needed resources in the regular vaults and resources I am not sure about or know I need them at a higher lvl place them in the barter vaults. But regardless my melee or ranged character I ALWAY's run out of inventory space, my melee even more so as he's the crafter of the two, my ranged does not craft a thing, he does scavage so my ranged character is already wearing less then my melee character does, my second also does not use his horse saddle for crafting kits but am using it for ammo stock. See again something that shows it all depence on how you play the game.
Like I said earlyer somewhere on this website that I also "thought" melee was better, but after my actual experiance I don't feel either one is better, but just different. Just really knowing them does make a difference.
I have to admit that I had no interest in the game until I saw that it had a trial offer going on (I normally dont care, but this was an iffy genre for me). I have to admit, so far I'm rather impressed. I think I may look for a clan/guild today to make things even more interesting, but so far I'm really having a blast.
Sadly, my friends will never try it out, maybe my boyfriend will, but I doubt it. They're all hooked on WoW currently & I have an active WoW account, but it may be on the backburner for the next 15 days. :P
I was going to add to this thread with my own recommendation for FE, but i think it should be noted that not a single person before me had anything negative to say about it, and that speaks loud enough on it's own. Oh, and I agree with pretty much everyone above.
Yeah I'm pretty surprised to have not read anything negative about it yet. Pleasantly surprised. Thanks to everyone who responded. I ended up on this forum out of boredom but seeing the maturity and intelligence of the posters here (even when disagreeing), I decided to register. Seems like a really good community of gamers, so your responses are greatly appreciated and respected. Thanks again.
- Graphics suck: The graphics are not amazing, I'll agree but they do not suck. If you have a decent PC you can turn it all on max and everything looks good.
- Animations suck: The animations remind me a lot of SWG. I play in first-person 90% of the time, so its not something that I take notice of a lot, however, the melee animation (at least with the 2x4 piece of wood) was incredibly slow. Otherwise everything else looks fairly decent.
- character models suck: Their hairstyles could use some tweaking, maybe even more of them... I like the way my character turned out though. I think shes pretty. Their faces are done decently. The character creation system has many options, but in the end its very reminiscent of WoW where you don't really have any sliders. You have sliders for how old you look and height, but that's it. You can't change your weight, the proportions of your face are pre-designed so you have about 20 of them to choose from. An overview as to what you can change: height, face, hair (& color), eye color, makeup, face paint, tattoos (face, arms & legs), piercings, clothing color & clothing (shirt & shoes). That's all I can recall off the top of my head. There may be others.
- UI sucks: It's a normal, standard UI. Minimap, actionbar (which you can change the size of to accommodate more buttons). The ususal, really.
- combat sucks: Melee is a little slow, and it at times can be a must when fighting because... well you aren't going to want to bring a gun to a knife fight. However, so far the fighting style is very reminiscent of an FPS, a little slower maybe, but it reminds me a bit of counter-strike source.
- the driving feels like it comes from a game in 1995: This was actually an aspect that I enjoyed. When I got on my first ATV I was driving around like a mad man. It honestly felt like something out of Crash Banidcoot racing. :P I have no qualms here!
- the quests are boring: I personally love questing. I just wish their quests were a bit more in-depth. When asked to defend a spot, I would really like it if more then two waves of mobs came at me. But regardless of that, it's very standard questing at times. Run here, grab me that, craft me this, escort him here, take out five of those guys and come back and report. You know, the norm. All it offers is walking around for ages: Well personally, I prefer that. I hate how in other games its so easy to get around. One of my favorite games ever is Oblivion (although I grew bored quickly because its single-player) and I always enjoyed the fact that I could walk from point A to point B and it could take a long while to get there. But of course, this style of play is not for everyone.
I should mention that I've only been playing since yesterday, and so this is basically my first impressions & opinions from about 15 hours worth of playing. I think its a pretty solid game. It's very sandboxy, but themeparkish at the same time. It definitely has qualities from both.
There are plenty of things that need some work, but being that its in its early stages of play, I'm pretty happy with how far they've gone with it. I loved Fallout 3 but was bored quick, just like Oblivion, due to the single-playerness. I much prefer MMO's because of their social aspect.
Another great thing about this game is that everyone is constantly talking with one and other. I have had enormous amounts of help from the community and have yet to see a butthead. Of course they do exist, I just haven't come across any.
Let me put it this way, if you have any desire to try out the game I would really give it a shot. It wasn't on my list of games to try, but I'm having an absolute blast so far and they seem to be constantly updating. The patch notes are enormous, but at least they're working on stuff!
So yeah, this is the opinion of an absolute noob, take it as you will!

Well in the event that you haven't already purchased it. The Escapist is giving away 15-Day trial keys at the moment. They're definitely worth getting if you want to check it out before you spend some cash.

I played it in beta but the game wasn't fun :
- Graphics suck
- Animations suck
- character models suck
- UI sucks
- combat sucks
- the driving feels like it comes from a game in 1995
- the quests are boring
All it offers is walking around for ages.

Disliked it actually.. reasons..
1) no challange.. pve is simple..
2) no real group based content
3) everyone can craft everything, making crafting almost useless, just find a friend.
4) Tons of non BoE items causes market flooding..
I would have loved the game, but it's just an "almost a great" instead of an "is a great" for me..
It's pretty obvious it's rushed..
the setting and uniquness of the game make up for it's downfalls to alot, but not to me.
